Soccer Teams Advance From Virginia Athletics Media Relations News ReleasesThe fourth-ranked Virginia women's soccer team advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for the third time in four years with a 7-0 victory over No. 14 Kentucky Sunday evening at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers (21-2) will meet top-seed UCLA on Friday at 8 p.m in the quarterfinals in a rematch of last year's NCAA Championship match. Junior Makenzy Doniak set the school record for points in a game with eight, recording three goals and two assists. Senior Morgan Brian added two goals and two assists in her final game at Klockner Stadium. Doniak's hat trick was the second of her career, both coming in the NCAA Tournament (last year vs. Saint Francis). The school-record eight points gives her 48 points for the season, setting a new Virginia single-season record. The previous mark of 47 points was set by Caroline Miller in 2012. Doniak's 19 goals this season is one shy of the Virginia single-season record, set by Miller in 2012 and matched by Doniak last season. Doniak has scored in 10 of Virginia's last 11 games. The result was the most lopsided NCAA Tournament Round of 16 game since 2003, when North Carolina defeated Purdue 7-0. "You don't go into a game like this, against an opponent as good as Kentucky, and expect a result like this," said head coach Steve Swanson. "Kentucky deserves a lot of credit for a tremendous season. A lot of teams would have come in here and dropped back and played a lot of players behind the ball, but they deserve a lot of credit for coming out to play. That hasn't always been the case for us. I thought, at times, we played some really good soccer. It was a good performance by a lot of players tonight and we are happy to be moving on." The 22nd-ranked Virginia men's soccer team also advanced on Sunday at Klockner as the Hoos rallied to top UNC Wilmington, 3-1. Virginia came back with goals from Sam Hayward, Jake Rozhansky, and Kyle McCord. Scott Thomsen assisted on each of the Cavaliers' first two scores. Virginia is making its 34th consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament, the longest active streak in Division I men's soccer. Next up is a rematch with Notre Dame, which bounced UVa from the ACC Tournament with a 3-0 score. "This time of year, as the stakes go up, winning is much harder, especially winning from behind," Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. "When you go behind in the playoffs, it is just a little bit tougher. The guys did a great job getting an equalizer right before half which was very important. I really felt like going into halftime after scoring that goal, we had them. We made a few tactical changes which I thought were better." |

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne “UVa has always been a school I’ve had a lot of interest in,” Abramson said. “It has great academics, and the football program shows a lot of promise. When we visited, my family and I had a great meeting with Coach London. There is really so much about Coach London that I like. He is a great man with so much integrity. He cares about winning. He does, but he is really much more than just a football coach. He’s a life mentor and a teacher. To have a guy who is such a good guy be so passionate about what he does, it’s fun to follow a guy like that.” EDGE subscribers will be able to read a full report on the 6’3”, 210-pound signal caller this week. Also, throughout the week I’ll have updates from those recruits who were in Scott Stadium this past Saturday for Virginia’s big win.
