Elbaba Wins National Indoor Singles Championship

From Virginia Athletics Media Relations News Releases

Virginia junior women's tennis player Julia Elbaba won the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate women's singles championship on Sunday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

No. 5 Elbaba defeated No. 43 Maegan Manasse of Cal 6-2, 7-5 to claim her first major collegiate singles championship. Elbaba went 5-0 during the tournament and joined teammate Danielle Collins as major championship winners for Virginia. Collins claimed the 2014 NCAA singles title. Elbaba's best finish in a major collegiate championship was runner-up at the Riviera/ITA All-American during her freshman season in 2012.

"I got to the finals of All-Americans in my first year, so I really did want to win this one," Elbaba said. "That was the only kind of pressure I felt. I didn't want to go home as a second place runner-up again. I just used that pressure to my advantage and told myself to stick with the plan, and that's what we did."

Elbaba posted wins over No. 16 Zsofi Susanyi of Cal (6-2, 6-4), No. 20 Lorraine Guillermo of Pepperdine (7-5, 6-3), No. 1 Jamie Loeb of North Carolina (7-6, 4-6, 6-2) and Brooke Austin (6-2, 6-4) of Florida and Manasse during her run to the title. Elbaba improved to 12-2 in the fall.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Virginia football is on a bye this week. Recruiting will be a main focus with the time off. Coach Mike London and company are still looking to close out the class of 2015 in strong fashion (both on and off the field), but recruiting the class of 2016 has been and will continue to be a focus as well.

As football recruiting hits its stretch run, I’ll have another “Strategy Session” out this week to catch you up on the 2015 and 2016 scholarship situation and look at some of the top remaining targets in 2015.

Playoff time is approaching for high school football. Check out the latest “Week In Review” for the latest on which Cavalier recruits are headed to the postseason.

Basketball recruiting takes the forefront this week as well with Wednesday marking the beginning of the Early Signing Period for Division 1 men’s basketball.

EDGE subscribers can read the latest on Jarred Reuter, senior power forward out of Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and Virginia’s lone commitment in the class of 2015. In last week’s “Sabre Scoop,” Reuter talks Virginia, the development of his game, and more. It is linked below. Last week’s “Scoop” also contains notes on Virginia class of 2016 commit Kyle Guy and class of 2016 target Mamadi Diakite.

Early this week, I’ll have a report on Guy, a junior combo guard commitment out of Indianapolis, Indiana. The 4-star prospect chose the Hoos over offers from a number of schools, including in-state programs Butler, Indiana, and Purdue.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
