ACC Soccer Tournaments This Week

From Virginia Athletics Media Relations News Releases

The No. 21 Virginia men's soccer team will play host to Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Klockner Stadium in a first-round match in the 2014 ACC Championship. UVa (9-5-2, 3-3-1 ACC) earned the No. 8 seed in the tournament, while Virginia Tech (7-7-2, 2-5-1) claimed the No. 9 seed. Virginia and Virginia Tech met earlier this season in Charlottesville with the Cavaliers scoring a 1-0 victory.

This marks the first-ever matchup between the programs in postseason play. The winner of the match will travel to top-seeded Notre Dame for a quarterfinal match on Sunday. The ACC Tournament Semifinals and Championship Game are on Friday, Nov. 14 and Sunday, Nov. 16 in Cary, N.C.

The Virginia women's soccer team is the No. 3 seed in the 2014 ACC Tournament, which is a four-team bracket being held Nov. 7-9 at the UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.

UVa (17-1, 9-1 ACC) will play second-seeded North Carolina (12-2-2, 9-0-1 ACC) in Friday's second semifinal at 8 p.m. Top-seeded Florida State (16-1-1, 9-0-1 ACC) will play fourth-seeded Notre Dame (12-4-2, 7-2-1 ACC) in the first semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Both semifinals will be broadcast on ESPN3, while Sunday's championship game will be televised live at 1 p.m. on ESPNU. The Cavaliers and Tar Heels did not meet during the regular season.

Virginia is looking for its third ACC Tournament title, winning the championship in 2004 and 2012. This is the first year the ACC Tournament has been a four-team event. All four semifinalists are currently ranked in the top 10 of the national rankings.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Virginia’s men’s basketball program, which has two verbal commitments so far in the class of 2016, has made the final 11 for five-star junior shooting guard Tyus Battle. UVa’s two commitments are both backcourt players, but the Gil St. Bernard’s (Gladstone, N.J.) star is certainly another backcourt prospect coach Tony Bennett and company would love to have as well.

Joining the Cavaliers in Battle’s final 11 are Connecticut, Duke, Florida, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, Syracuse, and Villanova.

Next Wednesday, Nov. 12, is the beginning of the Early Signing Period for Division 1 men’s basketball. Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, N.H.) power forward Jarred Reuter is expected to sign with the Hoos, and this week I hope to catch up with the 6’8”, 245-pound senior for his thoughts leading up to the signing period.

Early this week, I also plan to have a basketball recruiting “Sabre Scoop” discussing the latest news, notes, and targets.

On the football recruiting front, I plan to catch up with Central Catholic (Pittsburgh, PA) senior safety John Petrishen for the latest in his recruitment. UVa and Pitt continue to be the frontrunners, but when a decision will come is anyone’s guess.

Last week, I caught up with Cavalier class of 2015 commits C.J. Stalker and Christopher Sharp. Stalker, who is featured in an EDGE update, updates the status of his early enrollment plans and reflects on his experience in Charlottesville for the UVa/UNC game. Sharp, who is featured in the free weekly feature, “2014 Week In Review,” discusses his outstanding senior season and what separates him from other running backs out there. Both of those articles are linked below.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. To sign up for an EDGE subscription, please check out the Sabre EDGE Sign Up and Information Page. If you're already on board as an EDGE subscriber, click the links below to catch up on recruiting.
