Commonwealth Clash To Pit Hoos Vs. Hokies

From VirginiaSports.com

The longstanding rivalry between Virginia and Virginia Tech is getting a new name-- the Commonwealth Clash presented by Virginia529. Building on a tradition started when the two schools first competed against each other in a football game in 1895, the Commonwealth Clash is a head-to-head, points-based competition between the athletic teams of the Hoos and Hokies.

The competition will include the 21 sports in which the two schools compete against each other, plus one fan-decided point.

At the end of each school year, the institution with the most points will be crowned the champion of the Commonwealth Clash.

"The Commonwealth Clash continues a great athletic rivalry between the Hoos and the Hokies," said UVa director of athletics Craig Littlepage. "Sports are not the only tradition the two schools share. Both have set high standards in academics which makes Virginia529 a fitting sponsor for the rivalry competition."

"Student-athletes from all sports will have an equally important role in earning the Commonwealth Clash, making it a year-long competition," said Whit Babcock, director of athletics at Virginia Tech. "The fan element adds an exciting new concept to this rivalry and will enable our supporters to help determine the final result."

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Last week, Gladimir Paul, a defensive end recruit out of Philadelphia (PA), committed to the Hoos, who now boast 20 commitments in the class of 2015. I plan to have more with the Northeast High School standout this week, so stay tuned.

I’ve thought for some time that Virginia would take 25 commitments in the class of 2015. If a prospect or two enrolls in January, the Cavaliers could take more than 25 if there is room on the roster. Regardless, the amount of spots still available in this class is in the single digits, and this week I’ll take a look at some of the top remaining targets, when they may commit, and what Virginia’s chances are right now.

Also, stay tuned for a full report on which prospects made the trip to Charlottesville for this Saturday’s season opener against UCLA. We’ll have the full list of those confirmed recruits up late Saturday night with reports to follow. And as always, we’ll be there for any breaking news.

Basketball Recruiting

I posted the latest “Strategy Session” focused on Virginia men’s basketball recruiting in the class of 2016. The “Strategy Session” feature is our big picture outlook, detailing how many scholarships UVa has available to use, what the needs are, and what prospects have been offered and what UVa’s chances are with those prospects.

EDGE subscribers can read this full report as well as a report I put up last Friday (linked below) on class of 2016 center Mamadi Diakite, who solidified a Cavalier offer with an impressive performance at Tony Bennett’s Elite Camp on August 16.

This week, I’ll have reports up on class of 2016 point guard Ty Graves, class of 2017 point guard Matt Coleman, and hopefully class of 2016 combo guard Ty Jerome, who is expected to visit Virginia this weekend.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
