Don't Forget Meet The Team Day

The Virginia football team opened practice last week as it prepares for the season opener on August 30. Kickoff is scheduled for noon against UCLA.

Don't forget, fans have one more opportunity to see the team before the season starts. UVa's Meet the Team Day will take place at John Paul Jones Arena this Sunday, August 17. Players and coaches will be available for photos and autographs from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The main entrance as well as the arena's southeast and garage entrances will be used for this event. Each entrance will open at 12:30 p.m. Free parking will be available in the JPJ and University Hall surface lots.

The 2014 Cavalier Football schedule poster, schedule magnet and schedule cards will be available for fans. The first 500 youth in attendance will receive a free Nike mini football. Concession stands featuring beverages and snacks will be available on the arena floor. All fans in attendance will have the opportunity to win door prizes including 2014 season tickets and an away game road trip. Cavman and his horse, Sabre, will be in attendance along with members of the Virginia spirit teams as well.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Virginia football continued its recruiting roll this past week, scoring three more verbal commitments. The Hoos were the favorites for linebackers Kareem McDonald and Jahvoni Simmons, who announced their decisions on Tuesday, but also received a surprise pledge from Good Counsel (Olney, MD) athlete Myles Robinson. All three players are members of the class of 2015.

Robinson, a 6’0”, 188-pound prospect, could play cornerback or wide receiver on the next level. He considered offers from Michigan State and Ohio State in addition to UVa, which he visited during his sophomore year. Robinson plans to return to Charlottesville this Saturday and we’ll catch up with him for reaction.

Simmons, a 4-star middle linebacker, chose Virginia over Alabama, Miami, NC State, and Wisconsin. Check out video footage of the Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA) standout’s press conference and much more in my report posted linked below.

This week I’ll have more with the 6’3”, 220-pound McDonald, an outside linebacker recruit out of Wilson High School (Washington, D.C.). McDonald, who chose Virginia over Toledo, announced his commitment one day after returning home from a visit to Charlottesville.

Another commitment, linebacker/tight end Tanner Cowley, visited UVa as well this past week. I will have a full article up on the New Jersey rising senior. Among the topics we’ll discuss will be which position Virginia is recruiting him to play and when he plans on enrolling. At last check, Cowley wanted to enroll in January of 2015.

Basketball recruiting-wise, Tony Bennett’s Elite Camp takes place on Saturday, August 16. TheSabre.com plans to be on hand for full coverage of the event, so EDGE subscribers should stay tuned for those reports.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
