Football Practice Begins!

The Virginia football team opens fall practice Monday (August 4) as the Hoos prepare for the 2014 season. The first game is when UCLA visits Charlottesville on Saturday, August 30 at Noon. That's the first of three home games to open the season for the Hoos.

The team’s first three practices will be open to the public. The practices are scheduled for Monday, Aug. 4, Tuesday, Aug. 5 and Wednesday, Aug. 6. Each practice will start at 7:15 p.m. and be held on the fields behind the McCue Center. The practice sessions will last approximately two hours. Parking is available for free after 5 p.m. in the McCue Center and University Hall lots. Fans can watch the practices from the outdoor field, but will not have access to any activities that take place in the George Welsh Indoor Practice Facility. In the event of inclement weather, fans will have to leave the practice facility.

The only other opportunity to see the team is on Meet the Team Day, which is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 17 at John Paul Jones Arena. Players and coaches will be available for photos and autographs from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The JPJ will open at 12:30 p.m. Parking will be available at the JPJ and University Hall surface lots.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Last week was a successful one on the recruiting trail for both Virginia football and men’s basketball.

On the basketball front, Tony Bennett and company secured a verbal commitment from 6’8”, 245-pound power forward Jarred Reuter, a rising senior out of reigning National Prep Champion Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, N.H.). Reuter chose the Hoos shortly after making an official visit to Charlottesville last week.

For more on Reuter, check out the free article linked below. In the coming weeks stay tuned for a look ahead to UVa men’s basketball recruiting in the class of 2016, including a rundown of those players Bennett has offered and which prospects the Cavaliers are in the best position with right now.

While Bennett and company scored their first and possibly only commitment in the class of 2015 (UVa currently has no more scholarships available to use), coach Mike London and the football program picked up commitments 13 and 14 in the class of 2015 last week.

St. Joseph’s Prep (Philadelphia, PA) all-purpose tailback Olamide Zaccheaus was the first to commit last week. Hun School (Princeton, N.J.) tailback Christopher Sharp followed suit. Zaccheaus is the smaller back at 5’8”, but he has played a big role rushing, receiving, and returning over the past few years at St. Joseph’s, which captured a state title last season.

Sharp, who is close to 6’2”, 200 pounds, is obviously the bigger back. He has good receiving skills as well. EDGE subscribers can read more on Sharp in the article linked below. I plan to have more on Zaccheaus this week.

Virginia football could be in store for another big recruiting week this week. On Tuesday, a pair of linebackers - DC area standout Kareem McDonald and Virginia Beach star Jahvoni Simmons - are set to make their college commitments. Virginia has a great shot with both. At last check McDonald was planning on announcing his decision at 2 p.m., while Simmons will reveal his choice at a press conference at his school at 5 p.m.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
