Harold, Harris On Bednarik Award Watch List

Virginia Athletics Official Release

Virginia defensive end Eli Harold and strong safety Anthony Harris were both named to the preseason Bednarik Award Watch List, the Maxwell Football Club announced.

The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995. Chuck Bednarik, a former standout at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles, is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame (class of 1969) and the NFL Hall of Fame (class of 1967)

Harold is a preseason All-ACC honoree by Phil Steele and Athlon Sports. CFPA listed Harold on its preseason 40-man watch list for its defensive lineman of the year. Harold had 8.5 sacks in 2013, the fourth-most by an underclassman in the nation. He also racked up 15.0 tackles for a loss, which ranked No. 7 all-time at UVa for a season.

Harris is a preseason All-American after winning All-America honors in 2013 from Sports Illustrated (first) and Walter Camp (second). Harris led the nation with eight interceptions and set a UVa record with at least one interception in five straight games. CFPA listed Harris on its preseason 42-man watch list for its defensive back of the year.

Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced Nov. 3, 2014, while the three finalists will be unveiled Nov. 24, 2014. The winner of the 2014 Bednarik Award will be announced on Dec. 11, 2014.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

The Virginia baseball program, just one win away from a National Championship in 2013/2014, is bringing in a talented freshman class. This week I’ll take a look at head coach Brian O’Connor’s latest recruiting haul, which includes Hanover (Mechanicsville, VA) pitcher Derek Casey.

On the football recruiting front, be sure to check out my latest “Strategy Session,” which was posted this past Friday. In the feature (linked below), I take a look at the recent developments including roster updates and player commitments, and I also analyze those positions the staff will emphasize with the rest of the 2015 scholarships.

Stay tuned for more football recruiting updates this week, including reports on a few Pennsylvania standouts.

Central Catholic (Pittsburgh, PA) class of 2015 safety Johnny Petrishen enjoyed a successful late spring/summer on the recruiting front, scoring offers from Virginia, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest and Syracuse. Things have slowed down a bit, but the 6’2”, 195-pound rising senior has received serious interest from Northwestern and Stanford and could land offers from those schools soon. I’ll have the latest on Petrishen, who discusses his summer plans plus when he may make his college commitment.

I also hope to have much more with UVa defensive tackle commitment James Trucilla this week. The Cathedral Prep (Erie, PA) rising senior earned all-state honors his junior season. I plan to ask him about his upcoming senior campaign, why he chose Virginia, and more in a “Q&A” feature.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
