This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Kettle Run (Nokesville, VA) wide receiver David Eldridge III pledged to the Hoos late last Thurday, giving Virginia its fourth commitment in the class of 2015. I caught up with the 6’1”, 165-pound rising senior for an interview.

“I’ve been in contact with Virginia for a while now. I talk to Coach Hagans and Coach Oliver a lot,” Eldridge said. “I talked it over with my family and decided that’s where I wanted to pursue my college opportunities.”

Eldridge discusses a variety of topics in the article linked below, including more on why he committed to UVa, Cavalier receivers coach Marques Hagans, his performance in the April 26 Nike Football Training Camp in Northern Virginia, and more.

Also on the football recruiting front ...

UVa received a visit this past weekend from Kareem Gibson, a rising senior cornerback out of Greater Johnstown High School in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The 5’10” prospect is considering scholarship offers from Maryland, Pitt and UVa, among others. We hope to have more on this defensive back target this week.

Virginia will host its first one-day camp of 2014 this Sunday, June 8. Stay tuned for any breaking news from the event.

Basketball-wise, in case you missed it I posted an EDGE article last Friday on incoming transfer Darius Thompson. EDGE subscribers can read the entire report, but here is some of that piece ...

Darius Thompson formed a favorable opinion of UVa head coach Tony Bennett in the spring of 2013, when Virginia and others were in pursuit of the then Blackman High School (Murfreesboro, TN) senior. That initial connection helped the Hoos reel in the 6’5” combo guard when he decided to transfer from the University of Tennessee this spring, following his freshman season.

Following the 2013/2014 season, in which Tennessee made a run to a Sweet Sixteen, Cuonzo Martin left Knoxville for the head coaching position at California-Berkeley. On May 5, Thompson was granted a release from Tennessee to explore transfer possibilities. At the time he left open the possibility of returning to Tennessee, which hired Donnie Tyndall as head coach.

Thompson took an official visit to Purdue before heading to UVa for a visit on May 19 and 20.

“I think one of the biggest differences (between Purdue and UVa) was that the Virginia coaches had a prior relationship with Darius,” said Lonnie Thompson, Darius’ father and head men’s basketball coach at Cumberland University in Tennessee. “He got up [to Charlottesville] on a Monday. On Tuesday, he committed. Like I said, he already had a relationship with those guys. He said, ‘Dad. This is where I want to be.’ He felt good about it before he got over there, and once he got there he knew what he wanted to do. He felt relaxed. A lot of that has to do with Tony Bennett and his style. Darius wants to be part of a system like that.”

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
