Kirby, O'Connor Win ACC Awards

From Virginia Athletics Media Relations News Releases

Highlighted by ACC Co-Pitcher of the Year Nathan Kirby, a league-high eight members of the Virginia baseball team were named to the 2014 All-ACC Team, announced Monday by the conference office. In addition, Virginia head coach Brian O'Connor was tabbed the ACC Coach of the Year for the fifth time while earning the distinction for the fourth time in the last five years.

A league-high five Cavaliers were named to the All-ACC First Team: Kirby, Branden Cogswell, Nick Howard, Joe McCarthy, and Mike Papi. Nate Irving, Daniel Pinero, and Brandon Waddell were named to the All-ACC Third Team.

Kirby shared ACC Pitcher of the Year honors with Miami's Chris Diaz and is the second UVa pitcher to earn the award. Danny Hultzen was voted the league's pitcher of the year in 2010 and 2011. Kirby is 8-1 with an ACC-low 1.58 earned run average.

Since the ACC Coach of the Year award was debuted in 1981, only Florida State's Mike Martin has won the honor more than O'Connor; Martin has earned the distinction seven times.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

The Sabre.com was on hand for Sunday play in the Nike EYBL in Hampton, Virginia. In a “Sabre Scoop” recruiting feature coming out this week, I’ll have a full report that includes recruiting news and notes and other observations. I have tweeted a few initial observations (@ChrisHorneSW) and posted some recruiting news on the EDGE subscriber message board, but stay tuned for much more in “Sabre Scoop.”

In addition to the EYBL coverage, we’ll also bring you any updates or breaking news on Ukraine class of 2014 shooting guard target Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, who reportedly is on Grounds making an official visit. As soon as we get any information on Mykhailiuk and/or Tennessee transfer Darius Thompson, we’ll let you know. Thompson, a 6’5” point guard, is exploring other options after playing one season for the Volunteers. He has taken an official visit to Purdue and is expected to visit Virginia. Returning to Tennessee may be an option as well.

While we wait on a decision from the 6’6” Ukrainian standout, Virginia’s incoming freshmen class currently sits at four. One of those players - center prospect Jack Salt - begins classes today. Salt is a 6’10” prospect out of New Zealand. I’ve had several articles on him on The Sabre, but New Zealand Hoops has also posted this recent feature here.

On the football recruiting front, I’ll have some offensive line recruiting notes in the “Scoop” as well as full updates on in-state offensive line prospects Blake Camper and Justin Skule later this week. Camper, a rising senior offensive tackle out of Cox (Va. Beach, VA), and Skule, a rising senior out of Centreville (Clifton, VA), have each added scholarship offers in the Spring Evaluation Period. We’ll have the latest in terms of UVa’s standing with both players this week.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. To sign up for an EDGE subscription, please check out the Sabre EDGE Sign Up and Information Page. If you're already on board as an EDGE subscriber, click the links below to catch up on recruiting.
