Three Hoos Picked In NFL Draft

From Virginia Athletics Media Relations News Releases

For the 31st consecutive year (dating back to 1984) a Virginia player has been drafted in the NFL Draft. The streak is tied for the second longest in the ACC.

Virginia senior offensive tackle Morgan Moses was selected by the Washington Redskins during Friday's third round. Moses was the 66th overall pick and the first Cavalier drafted by the Washington Redskins since 1986 when offensive guard Jim Huddleston was taken in the sixth round.

Virginia senior defensive tackle Brent Urban was selected by the Baltimore Ravens during Saturday’s fourth round as the 134th overall pick. Urban is the first UVa defensive tackle drafted since Monsanto Pope in 2002 (Denver). This is the earliest a UVa defensive tackle has been selected since Ron Gassert was taken with the 56th overall pick in the 1962 NFL Draft.

Virginia senior center Luke Bowanko was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars during Saturday’s sixth round as the 205th overall pick. Bowanko is the first UVa center drafted since John St. Clair went to the St. Louis Rams in 2000 (third round).

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Former Maryland guard Seth Allen will transfer to Virginia Tech and Rock School (Gainesville, FL) senior Mitchell Wilbekin pledged to Wake Forest, leaving Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, a 6’5” shooting guard out of Ukraine, as UVa basketball’s top remaining spring target. Unless the staff pursues another transfer, Mykhailiuk is Virginia’s lone remaining spring target.

Mykhailiuk may have several decisions to make. The first one is whether or not he will play college basketball in the United States or if he will play professionally in Europe. If college is the choice, he will then have to decide which school he will attend. Virginia remains in the running, but others, including Kansas, are reportedly vying for the Ukrainian prospect as well.

The Spring Signing Period for Division 1 Men’s Basketball ends on May 21. Mykhailiuk indicated in an interview elsewhere that he may make his decision by this date.

UVa is expected to have four true freshmen on its roster this coming season. New Zealand native Jack Salt, a center prospect, will enroll later this month. Wing prospects Marial Shayok and BJ Stith, and forward Isaiah Wilkins will enroll in late spring or summer as well.

While spring recruiting for the class of 2014 (and transfer season) is winding down, the UVa coaches will turn their attention to class of 2015 and class of 2016 recruiting. This weekend, the Nike EYBL AAU circuit arrives in Hampton (VA). The Sabre plans to be on hand for coverage of Virginia targets, so stay tuned to The Sabre for much more on the men’s basketball recruiting front in the coming weeks.

On the football recruiting front we’ll continue to track those prospects UVa has offered and any new prospects that arise. Last week was a good one for the Hoos, who picked up another class of 2015 commitment when Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.) quarterback Nick Johns made his pledge. Johns, a 6’3”, 215-pound signal caller, is Virginia’s third commitment in the class.

EDGE subscribers can read why Johns chose UVa over Maryland and NC State in last Wednesday’s “Sabre Scoop” article linked below.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
