Double Tennis Titles From Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official News ReleasesThe Virginia tennis teams swept the ACC Tournament Championships on Sunday in North Carolina. The fourth-ranked Virginia men's tennis captured its eighth consecutive ACC Championship with a 4-0 victory over No. 9 North Carolina. It was the 10th championship in the past 11 years for the Cavaliers (23-2). The eight consecutive championships are the longest streak in the team era of the ACC Tournament (since 1986). Overall, it is the longest title run since North Carolina won nine consecutive championships from 1970-78. "It is always a tremendous honor to win this tournament, whether it is the first one or the tenth one," said head coach Brian Boland. "I think we are a tough team to beat when we win the doubles point and that gave us a boost again today. We had some great performances in singles too. Alex [Domijan] was dominant at No. 1. Ryan [Shane] was great at No. 3 and Thai [Kwiatkowski] gave us another great performance at No. 5. Those points went pretty swiftly and the way those guys are playing gives us a lot of confidence." Domijan, the ACC Tournament MVP, clinched the title for the Cavaliers with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 over Brayden Schnur. It was his 100th career dual match singles win, as he became the first Virginia player to reach that milestone. "Winning this championship is special," said Domijan. "This year has been the strongest the ACC has been in my four years, so to win the regular season and the tournament is an accomplishment we can be proud of. This match was really competitive and we know that we have to play well every match to win this title. It isn't something we take for granted." The win extended Virginia's ACC-record win streak to 121 straight victories over conference opponents. While the men's team extended its ACC success, the women's program picked up its first ACC Championship title. Sophomore Stephanie Nauta fought off a pair of match points to post a three-set win over Duke's Hanna Mar to lift No. 3 seed Virginia to a 4-2 win over No. 5 seed Duke. Virginia (21-5) won the doubles point and received singles victories from Danielle Collins, Maci Epstein, and Nauta in its second win over Duke this season. The match lasted nearly five hours in temperatures that soared above 85 degrees. "Honestly, you can plan for an ACC title, but win, lose or draw these are the kinds of matches you want to play in," Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau said. "This championship is going to lead to some great things and it's a great moment. This is great for our program and University. I'm very happy and proud of our fans, too. What an awesome group of folks. Troy [Porco] and I are so so happy for the girls. This is why we all work so hard and ask for so much from each other - to earn these types of experiences and success. They deserve it completely." Collins received the ACC Championship's Most Valuable Player honor. Collins went 3-0 in doubles and 2-0 in singles en route to the award. |

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne On the basketball recruiting front, I’ll have the latest on Brewster Academy class of 2014 point guard Devonte’ Graham, who was on Grounds on an official visit this past weekend. The 6’2”, 170-pound senior has also visited Kansas and NC State. Providence and Virginia Tech round out his final five schools. Graham isn’t the only senior point guard Virginia is eyeing, as head coach Tony Bennett scouted Rock School (Gainesville, FL) prospect Mitchell Wilbekin last week. Wilbekin signed a letter of intent with Tulsa last fall but has gained a release following the departure of Danny Manning to Wake Forest. I’ll check in to see how strong Virginia’s interest is and where Wilbekin goes from here. I’ll have a report on Virginia class of 2014 signee B.J. Stith, who scored 11 points as the U.S. All-Stars defeated the Capital All-Stars in this past Saturday’s Capital Classic. Stith graduates from Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, VA) in May and plans to enroll in Charlottesville in June. Finally, I plan to have more on Virginia basketball’s most recent commitment, Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.) small forward Marial Shayok, so stay tuned for that report. Football recruiting-wise, stay tuned for my reports from last Saturday’s Nike Football Training Camp at Centreville High School (Clifton, VA). Top Virginia targets such as Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA) rising senior linebacker Jahvoni Simmons and Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach) rising junior cornerback Levonta Taylor are among the players I caught up with this past Saturday. I’ll have recruiting updates as well as my take on these players in articles on The Sabre.com this week. Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
