UVa-GW To Play In Basketball

An official George Washington news release indicates that Virginia and George Washington will play in men's basketball over the next two seasons. The two teams will meet in Charlottesville on Nov. 21, 2014 as part of the upcoming season. The Cavaliers will travel to face the Colonials on Nov. 16, 2015 as part of the following season's schedule. This marks the first time since 1984 that the programs have met in the regular season.

Both teams made the NCAA Tournament after the 2013-2014 season. Virginia earned the No. 1 seed in the East Region after winning the ACC title in both the regular season and the conference tournament. GW took the No. 9 seed in the East and posted a 24-9 record for the season. Memphis eliminated the Colonials and then fell to UVa in the next round.

This home-and-home series continues a recent trend for the Hoos, who have added regional teams to the schedule with regularity in the Tony Bennett era. Last season, Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth faced each other in November and the Cavaliers will travel to Richmond this coming season. UVa opened the 2012-2013 campaign with a trip to George Mason after hosting the Patriots in 2011-2012. The Wahoos also have battled Navy, Hampton, Liberty, ODU, and JMU.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

The Virginia men’s basketball program is looking to add to an already solid 2014 Class. Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, N.H.) point guard Devonte’ Graham is one of the targets on the list.

Graham made an official visit to Kansas this past weekend. He tweeted that the trip went well, but as of this writing he has not made a verbal commitment. The 6’2” point guard is scheduled to visit NC State Monday and Tuesday before heading to UVa on Friday. Providence and Virginia Tech round out the list of schools Graham is considering.

Virginia is also awaiting word on Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.) small forward Marial Shayok, who is considering Indiana, Marquette, and Michigan as well. UVa made the 6’6” prospect’s final three last fall before he committed to Marquette in November. After head coach Buzz Williams left for Virginia Tech, Shayok asked for and was granted a release from the LOI he signed last November.

Virginia also remains a serious player for Ukrainian shooting guard Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, although when his recruitment will end (and if he will go to college) may not be decided for a while.

We’ll have the latest on Virginia basketball recruiting this week, including any breaking news. For a complete summary of UVa basketball recruiting in the classes of 2014, 2015 and 2016, be sure to read my “Strategy Session” posted last Friday and linked below.

Also on the basketball recruiting front, UVa fans can watch 2014 Class signee B.J. Stith in action this Saturday in the Capital Classic, which will be held at T.C. Williams H.S. in Alexandria (VA). For more information, check out the Capital Classic website.

On the football recruiting front, UVa hosted defensive tackle prospect Aaron Crawford on an unofficial visit last Friday, and this week I plan to catch up with the Stone Bridge (Ashburn, VA) rising senior for reaction this week. I’ll also ask Crawford about his decision date, which is Aug. 2, and what schools are seriously in the running at this point.

Duke, North Carolina, Virginia, and Virginia Tech are among the schools that have offered the 6’2”, 290-pound prospect.
