UVa Men's Tennis Breaks ACC Record

Official Virginia Athletics Media Relations News Release

The fifth-ranked Virginia men's tennis team claimed its 11th consecutive ACC regular season title with a 7-0 victory over No. 23 Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improved to 19-2 overall and 10-0 in the ACC with their 10th straight win, while the Demon Deacons fell to 14-10 (3-6 ACC).

The victory also gave the Cavaliers sole possession of the ACC all-sport record with their 117th consecutive victory over conference opposition (regular season and postseason). The Duke women's tennis team previously held the record with 116 straight ACC wins from 1989-2000.

"It is something that is hard to believe in terms of the consistency that this program has had recently," said head coach Brian Boland. "We have so much respect for the Atlantic Coast Conference and there are a lot of really good teams in this league. We are humbled and honored to reach this milestone. I can't say enough positive things about the former and current players who have been a part of this run and how their dedication and passion for this program has allowed us to accomplish this feat."

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Four full months after receiving a commitment from Altavista (VA) free safety prospect Juan Thornhill, the Virginia football program scored its second class of 2015 recruit. Pennsylvania native Ryan Bischoff is the newest Hoo.

Bischoff, a 6’5”, 300-pound prospect, hails from Plymouth Whitemarsh High School in Plymouth Meeting (PA). He has seen action on both sides of the ball in high school but is being recruited by Virginia to play on the offensive line, which is a big need area for the Cavaliers in the class of 2015.

Virginia no doubt had hoped to keep the recruiting momentum rolling into last weekend, when a number of talented prospects made their way to Charlottesville for the Spring Game. So far no other commitments have come, but again some top prospects such as 4-star defensive end/outside linebacker Ricky DeBerry Jr. (rising senior out of St. Christopher’s (Richmond, VA)) and 4-star offensive lineman Matthew Burrell (rising senior out of Hylton (Woodbridge, VA)) were in Scott Stadium.

In the coming weeks I plan to have updates on DeBerry, Burrell, and other prominent recruits who were at Virginia this past weekend. Be sure to check out the “Notes” article linked below that includes a rundown of those confirmed visitors as well as some initial reaction. I also plan to catch up with top Ohio offensive line prospect George Brown Jr., who toured the Grounds this past Friday but did not stay for the Spring Game.

On the basketball recruiting front, Paul VI (Fairfax, VA) class of 2015 combo guard Franklin Howard will announce his college commitment Monday night at 10 p.m. on Comcast Sportsnet. Virginia is one of the finalists for the 6’4” rising senior, who is also considering Georgetown, Maryland, N.C. State, Ohio State and Syracuse.

This week we’ll also continue to monitor the recruitments of a pair of class of 2014 prospects in point guard Devonte Graham and wing Marial Shayok. My latest update on incoming first year center Jack Salt, who signed a letter of intent with the Hoos in November of 2013, hopefully will be out this week as well.

Finally, stay tuned for a “Strategy Session” - our big picture recruiting outlook - on Virginia men’s basketball recruiting coming out later this week.
