Teven Jones To Transfer

Official Virginia Athletics Media Relations News Release

Virginia men's basketball head coach Tony Bennett announced Monday that sophomore guard Teven Jones is leaving the Cavaliers' program.

"Teven informed me today that he is leaving the Virginia basketball program and will be looking for another school where he will have a better opportunity for playing time," Bennett said. "Teven's role on this team and attitude were a significant part of our success this year. I understand his desire to play more and we will support him moving forward."

The 6-0 Jones averaged 1.7 points in 59 career games at Virginia. He played in 29 of 37 games in 2013-14, averaging 0.5 points and 0.2 assists in 4.3 minutes per game. In 2012-13, Jones started nine of 30 games and scored a career-high 13 points in Virginia's 80-64 win against North Texas.

"I want to thank all of the coaches and my teammates for giving me the opportunity to be part of a special program," Jones said. "I would also like to thank the fans for their support over the past two seasons. This was the closest team that I've ever been a part of and it hurts to leave. But, I'm looking forward to continuing my basketball career at a new school."

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Virginia's Spring Game, a pretty solid event for the Hoos on the recruiting front, is on Saturday. Stay tuned to The Sabre.com over the weekend for the latest recruiting news, including a list of those prospects confirmed to be in attendance plus any breaking news.

A steady stream of prospects has made the way to Charlottesville this spring football season. Top rising junior Mark Birmingham, a tight end and defensive end for Briar Woods (Ashburn, VA), was on Grounds this past Saturday for a visit. I hope to check in with the class of 2016 standout for thoughts on Virginia and an early look at his recruitment.

On Tuesday this week, the Hoos will play host to quarterback Nick Johns of Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. Johns, a 6’3” signal caller, is one of only a handful of quarterbacks Virginia has offered so far in the class of 2015.

Johns has visited Virginia several times, most recently for the March 1 Junior Day. He is also considering offers from Maryland and NC State.

On Friday, Winton Woods (Cincinnati, OH) offensive lineman George Brown Jr. will be at UVa. Brown, a 6’7”, 260-pound prospect, has become one of the most highly recruited line prospects in the nation in the class of 2015. The offensive line may be Virginia’s biggest need in class of 2015 recruiting, so certainly Brown is an important visitor.

On the basketball recruiting front, stay tuned for an update on Virginia class of 2014 recruit Jack Salt. Next week I’ll have a “Strategy Session” that examines UVa men’s basketball class of 2015 and class of 2016 recruiting, including a list of some of the known top targets in those classes.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Kirby Throws No Hitter

Official Virginia Athletics Media Relations News Releases

Nathan Kirby threw a no-hitter in the No. 1-ranked Virginia baseball team's 4-0 victory at Pittsburgh Friday evening at Charles Cost Field. Kirby struck out 18 batters, one off the school and ACC single-game record, in UVa's first no-hitter since 2011. Virginia (26-4, 11-2 ACC) extended its winning streak to nine games with the momentous victory.

"It's kind of cliché but it was a blur," Kirby said. "It kind of slowed down there at the end of the game. With (Nate) Irving back there and John [La Prise] and the two plays he made and [Daniel] Pinero, who has made that play all year, they all helped me out but tonight there was a lot of added pressure. I can't sum it up just yet. It hasn't sunk in.

"It was one of those nights where the umpire and I were on the same page," Kirby said with a laugh. "I got a couple of close calls. Everything was working. I wanted to let the hitters hit it and let our defense play."

In recording his first career complete game, Kirby (6-1) fell one strikeout shy of the school and ACC records. The school record for strikeouts is 19, set by Harry Thomas in 1974 against Clemson. That total is tied with NC State's Shawn Senior (vs. Howard, 1993) and North Carolina's Roger Williams (vs. Duke, 1985) for the ACC record. The complete-game effort also marked the first time Kirby has pitched longer than 6 2/3 innings in his career.

Kirby's performance earned him some weekly honors. He has been named one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week and ACC Pitcher of the Week.
