No. 1 Seed UVa Opens Friday

From VirginiaSports.com

Virginia earned its 18th NCAA Tournament appearance by winning the ACC Tournament Championshp on Sunday.

The Cavaliers (28-6) are the No. 1 seed in the East Region where the will face No. 16 seed Coastal Carolina (21-12) in an NCAA Tournament game played in Raleigh, N.C., at PNC Arena on Friday, March 21. The game will tip off at approximately 9:15 p.m. and will air on TBS.

The winner of the Virginia-Coastal Carolina game will meet No. 8 seed Memphis (23-9) or No. 9 seed George Washington (24-8) in the third round on Sunday, March 23. That time will be announced after Friday's games.

This is Virginia's second NCAA Tournament appearance under 2014 ACC Coach of the Year Tony Bennett. The Cavaliers have compiled an all-time record of 22-17 in 17 NCAA tournaments. UVa advanced to the NCAA Final Four in 1981 and 1984. It's the fourth time Virginia has been a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

UVa football’s lone class of 2015 commitment, Altavista free safety/athlete Juan Thornhill, scored nine points as the Colonels defeated Radford High School in the Virginia boys' basketball 1A State Championship last Saturday. This is the second straight state title for the Altavista squad.

Thornhill, a point guard for the basketball team and quarterback/free safety on the football squad, led the Altavista varsity football squad to a 1A State Championship last fall as well. Stay tuned for more on the 6’1”, 175-pound junior this week in an EDGE update. I’ll also have highlights of Thornhill’s performance this past Saturday up on Sabre TV.

Also this week, I’ll examine what the focus has been for Virginia’s coaching staff early on in class of 2015 recruiting by taking a look at the offers that have been extended this far. In February’s “Strategy Session” feature, I broke down each position and analyzed what the most important needs were in the class. Stay tuned for the March “Strategy Session” this week.

Over the weekend, Virginia lost out on a top target at tight end, which is one of the bigger positions of need for the Hoos in this class. Connecticut product Chris Clark pledged to UNC over offers from UVa, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Virginia Tech, and many others. Clark visited UVa recently but announced via Twitter that he has pledged to UNC.

On the basketball front, I hope to catch up with some of UVa’s targets for reaction on the Cavaliers’ outstanding season. EDGE subscribers can read more on a pair of Virginia class of 2014 signees, BJ Stith and Isaiah Wilkins, in articles linked below. Stith, Wilkins, and center Jack Salt make up Virginia’s class of 2014.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
