London Adds Oliver To Staff

From VirginiaSports.com Official News Release

Virginia head football coach Mike London announced today the hiring of Jerome "Jappy" Oliver as defensive line coach. Oliver replaces Vincent Brown, who resigned his position with the Virginia football program to accept a coaching position at Connecticut as the linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator (Anthony Poindexter also left for UConn).

Oliver boasts 35 years of collegiate coaching experience, including stops at Air Force, Buffalo, Navy, Notre Dame, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt. Oliver comes to UVa after four seasons as the assistant head coach, defensive line coach and professional football liaison at Buffalo where the Bulls are coming off a 2013 appearance in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, only the second bowl appearance in program history.

Oliver will be reunited with defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta at Virginia. Oliver and Tenuta coached together at Notre Dame during the 2008 season.

"I've known coach Oliver for a number of years from my time serving as a defensive line coach," London said. "He is someone who has always been highly respected in the profession. I think he is a very good fit for our program. He has worked at a number of BCS schools that share the same values as Virginia. He has a reputation for having good relationships with his players. He will also be very effective teaching and coaching Jon Tenuta's systems on defense because of their prior time working together."

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Charlottesville will be buzzing this weekend as most of the University of Virginia football program's commitments will be on Grounds on official visits. The list of those commitments making official visits this weekend includes:

  • 5-star safety Quin Blanding
  • QB Corwin Cutler
  • RB Jordan Ellis
  • WR Donovan Dowling
  • TE Evan Butts
  • OL Will Richardson
  • OL Steven Moss
  • DE Michael Biesemier
  • DE/LB Jordan Jackson
  • LB Caanan Brown

Upland (CA) cornerback/wide receiver Jeffery Farrar plans to be on Grounds on an unofficial visit. 5-star defensive lineman Andrew Brown and offensive lineman Jake Fieler will also be at UVa, though they will be there as official students. Both Brown and Fieler have enrolled and begin classes Monday.

This weekend will be very important for one commitment in particular. Will Richardson, a product of Cummings H.S. in Burlington, North Carolina, took an official visit to NC State in December and says this weekend's trip will determine whether he takes his talents to UVa or NCSU next season. I'll have more with Will in the "Sabre Scoop" early this week.

In addition to the prospects listed above, Virginia will host at least one class of 2014 uncommitted target this weekend as well. He is Colonial Forge (Stafford, VA) wide receiver/defensive back Daniel Ezeagwu. Ezeagwu, who was featured in an EDGE article last week, is considering an offer from the Cavaliers as well as offers from Maryland, ODU, JMU, and Towson.

The "Countdown To Signing Day" feature, a rundown of those players who will be Virginia Cavaliers next season, begins this week. My Postseason Top 40 will be posted late this week, early next at the latest. The "Top 40" is my ranking of the top 40 high school seniors in the state. Virginia has two commitments in the top five in Blanding and Brown, who were both Under Armour All-Americans. Brown was named the 2013/2014 Gatorade National Player of the Year.
