Brian, Swanson Honored

From VirginiaSports.com news releases

Virginia junior midfielder Morgan Brian was named the TopDrawerSoccer.com Player of the Year Thursday as the site announced its 2013 awards. Brian becomes the first Cavalier to be named a national player of the year in the history of the program.

Brian, who is a finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy and the Honda Award, was the leading scorer in the ACC this season with 46 points on 16 goals and a league-high 14 assists. She tied the Virginia single-season assist record. Brian scored in all four of the Cavaliers' NCAA Tournament victories as she led the team to its first College Cup appearance in 22 years. Brian was a first-team All-ACC selection for the third consecutive season. She has also made three appearances for the United States Women's National Team this year, scoring her first international goal against Mexico on Sept. 3.

Brian was one of three Cavaliers recognized by TopDrawerSoccer.com on the site's Team of the Season. Sophomore forward Makenzy Doniak joined Brian on the Best XI of upperclassmen, while sophomore defender Emily Sonnett was named to the second team.

Virginia head coach Steve Swanson was named the 2013 NSCAA/Field Turf Division I Women's National Coach of the Year, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced. Swanson becomes the first national coach of the year in the program's history.

Swanson, who was also the ACC Coach of the Year and the NSCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year, led the Cavaliers to a 24-1-1 record this season. Virginia had a perfect regular season (19-0-0) and captured the first ACC regular-season title in school history. The Cavaliers reached the NCAA Women's College Cup for the first time in 22 seasons before falling in penalty kicks to eventual-national champion UCLA in the semifinals.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Last week was the first week of a FBS football recruiting "Dead Period" that lasts through the middle of January. The week was good to Virginia, which landed verbal commitments from Fork Union Military Academy (VA) offensive lineman Jake Fieler and Indiana (PA) defensive end Darrious Carter.

Fieler, a 6'4", 295-pound prospect, attended FUMA for a postgraduate semester after graduating from Parkersburg South (W.Va.) in the spring of 2013. He will enroll at UVa next month along with 5-star defensive lineman Andrew Brown.

Carter, who stands at 6'5" and weighs 210 pounds, played wide receiver and defensive end in high school but will play mostly defensive end and possibly some outside linebacker for the Cavaliers. The Keystone State standout originally committed to Temple but decided to switch to Virginia following an official visit to Charlottesville the weekend of Dec. 13-15.

Virginia will get word on another class of 2014 target early this week when Gilman (Baltimore, MD) outside linebacker Melvin Keihn is expected to make his college commitment. Virginia is one of three finalists along with Maryland and Virginia Tech. Most feel the pick will be one of the latter two.

Also this week, the 2013 Chesapeake Bowl will take place on Saturday, Dec. 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. Virginia commitments Quin Blanding and Andrew Brown are listed as participants. Cavalier targets Jamil Kamara and Derrick Nnadi are also listed on the South team roster. TheSabre.com plans to be on hand for the Chesapeake Bowl so stay tuned this weekend for reports.

On the basketball recruiting front, I plan to check in with UVa's class of 2014 recruits BJ Stith and Isaiah Wilkins for an update on their senior seasons.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
