Must Read From Jeff White

Jeff White over at VirginiaSports.com provided an article update on the UVa men's basketball team. Here's a brief piece of the article, but fans should read the whole thing here:

"I think we have the makings to be better than we're showing," [coach Tony] Bennett said after the Green Bay game. However, he added, if "you can't play from start to finish and not have big lulls, you won't be in games with the competition we're going to go against."

After blowing a late lead and losing 59-56 to VCU at JPJ on Nov. 12, Virginia ran off six straight victories before falling 48-38 to visiting Wisconsin in an ACC/Big Ten Challenge game Dec. 4. Poor shooting plagued the Wahoos against the Badgers. Three nights later, poor defense -- along with 11 first-half turnovers -- doomed UVa against Green Bay.

"All we can do is learn from it," Anderson said. "We have the personnel, we have the talent, we have the coaching staff, we have everything we need. I think we need to just make sure we stay the course and put up blinders to all the negativity."

This non-conference schedule may be the Cavaliers' most challenging in five seasons under Bennett, who knew they'd be tested early.

"When you play a schedule like this," Bennett said Tuesday, "you're going to put yourself in spots where if you don't play well, or when you don't play a fairly complete game for the majority of the game -- meaning you better be solid at both ends -- you'll be beat.

"This is reality. This is college basketball."

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

The state of Virginia 5A and 6A State Championships took place in Scott Stadium this past Saturday. Meanwhile, the University of Virginia football program hosted three of its top remaining class of 2014 targets on official visits. Throughout this week I'll have EDGE reports on what transpired in Charlottesville this past weekend.

L.C. Bird took home the 5A State Championship with a 35-28 comeback win over Briar Woods, which led 21-6 at the half. In the 6A title contest, Centreville surprised Oscar Smith with a dominant performance, defeating the previously unbeaten Tigers 35-6 and spoiling Virginia recruit Andrew Brown's first ever game in Scott Stadium. Brown, who stayed in Charlottesville for an official following the game, will enroll at UVa next month.

Another Virginia class of 2014 recruit, quarterback Corwin "Turtle" Cutler, was in Charlottesville on an unofficial visit last weekend. Cutler was there to see his future school but also to help the Cavaliers in the recruitment of Bishop Sullivan (Virginia Beach, VA) 4-star senior wide receiver Jamil Kamara.

Kamara, Indiana (PA) defensive end Darrious Carter, and Western Branch (Chesapeake, VA) cornerback DaiQuan Lawrence took official visits to Virginia last weekend. Kamara will choose from three schools - Pittsburgh, Virginia and Wisconsin - at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 4. Virginia was the final official visit he will make before making his college choice known.

Carter, a 6'5", 210-pound prospect, had a great visit and will spend the first days of this week thinking about his college future. He is currently a Temple commit, but it would not be a surprise to see him switch to the Hoos in the near future. Lawrence, previously a commit to Wake Forest, is considering UVa, ECU, and Syracuse along with Wake Forest right now. A decision is not expected from him until around Signing Day.

In addition to updates on the above prospects, stay tuned for a check-in with Virginia's lone class of 2015 commit, Altavista (VA) athlete Juan Thornhill. Thornhill led his team to the 1A state title this past weekend.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
