Volleyball, Wrestling Top Virginia Tech

From UVa Athletics Media Relations Official News Releases

The No. 15 Virginia wrestling team used bonus points at three weight classes to defeat No. 8 Virginia Tech, 19-16, Sunday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena. The Hokies (7-1, 0-1 ACC) are the highest-ranked opponent the Cavaliers (6-1, 1-0) have defeated in program history.

The win snapped the Cavaliers' eight-match losing streak to Virginia Tech. Virginia last topped Virginia Tech 25-9 on Jan. 28, 2007, in Blacksburg. Prior to Sunday, the highest-ranked team Virginia had defeated was then-No. 9 Central Michigan on Jan. 12, 2013.

"It's been a long time coming," Virginia head coach Steve Garland said of the win. "We've had some close ones and we've had some not so close ones. It feels good to get that one. We have a full season still ahead of us, but it's great for confidence and for the reward of working and the feeling of family."

Meanwhile, the Virginia volleyball team clinched a season sweep over Virginia Tech for the first time since 2005 with a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium. With the win, the Cavaliers moved to 17-13 on the season and 10-8 in ACC play, while the Hokies fell to 21-11 (9-9 ACC). UVa will finish the season over .500 for the first time since 2008 when the Cavaliers completed the campaign 17-15.

"I thought we played well throughout the match," UVa coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. "We got a little sloppy in the middle of the first set, but overall we played clean volleyball and I was happy with our performance. We are ready to go out and win two more next weekend to close out the regular season."

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

EDGE Subscribers can check out my latest basketball "Strategy Session," a big picture outlook of Virginia men's basketball recruiting. Tony Bennett and company signed three players in Early Signing Period for the class of 2014. What may be in store for the Spring Signing Period and beyond? Check out the latest "Strategy Session" linked below for some analysis.

Football recruiting-wise, Virginia is in the final three for 4-star wide receiver Jamil Kamara, who will announce his college choice at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 4. Kamara confirmed his top three to TheSabre.com while also detailing his final official visit plans. Check out the short EDGE update for the latest on the Bishop Sullivan (Virginia Beach, VA) product, who is one of UVa's top remaining targets.

This week in recruiting, I'll have another "Sabre Scoop" article in which I discuss Kamara and other important decisions that will be taking place soon. The stretch run for class of 2014 recruiting really kicks in once the season is over, and no doubt the Virginia staff will look to hit the ground hard once this weekend's contest against Virginia Tech is over.

Also this week, I hope to have another full update on Cavalier offensive line commitment Will Richardson. The Cummings (Burlington, N.C.) senior had said many times previously that he wanted to enroll at UVa in January, but according to Cavalier coach Mike London only one class of 2014 recruit - 5-star DL Andrew Brown - will be enrolling early.

Stay tuned this week for the latest on those visitors we confirm to be in attendance for Saturday's home finale, and of course we'll have updates on those visitors and any breaking news that may come. We'll have a full rundown of those confirmed visitors on Saturday night.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
