Steinlage's Golden Goal Lifts Cavaliers to 1-0 Win Over FSU

From Official Virginia Athletics Media Relations News Release

The top-ranked Virginia women's soccer team won a matchup of the only two unbeaten teams in the country, downing No. 3 Florida State 1-0 in overtime Sunday in front of a school record 3,894 fans at Klockner Stadium. Senior midfielder Annie Steinlage scored her first goal as a Cavalier in the 91st minute as Virginia (18-0, 12-0 ACC) remained perfect on the season. The Seminoles (14-1-3, 9-1-2 ACC) suffered their first loss of the season.

The victory clinched Virginia's first ACC regular season title. The Cavaliers will look to be the first team to complete a perfect ACC schedule since North Carolina in 2006 when they host rival Virginia Tech on Thursday at 7 p.m. for Senior Night.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Applefield To Visit

There was a light turnout in terms of recruits at the Georgia Tech game, but the Clemson game should be a different story. Leading the way in terms of uncommitted seniors is Weeki Wachee (FL) offensive tackle Marcus Applefield, who is expected to make his official visit to UVa this weekend.

Virginia is one of four schools the 6'7", 285-pound prospect will take an official visit to before making a verbal commitment on Dec. 13. He already has been to Vanderbilt earlier this month, and in addition to UVa he will travel to Purdue (Nov. 8-10) and Rutgers (Dec. 6-8). Applefield took unofficial trips to Rutgers, Vanderbit, and Virginia back in June. He has yet to see Purdue.

UVa currently has two offensive line prospects committed in the class of 2014, and they are Chancellor (Fredericksburg, VA) standout Steven Moss and Cummings (Burlington, N.C.) star Will Richardson. Richardson plans on enrolling at UVa in January. Applefield also plans to enroll early at whatever school he chooses.

Virginia has received commitments from 10 high school seniors with the most recent pledge coming from Central Gwinnett (Lawrenceville, GA) cornerback Darious Latimore. EDGE subscribers (article linked below) can read more on Latimore , who pledged to the Hoos while on an official visit the weekend of the Duke game.

Stay tuned this weekend for more on Applefield and a list of those recruits confirmed to be in attendance for the Clemson game.

Also This Week ...

Sticking with the offensive line theme, I will have updates on class of 2015 in-state products Austin Clark and Chance Hall. The latter grew up rooting for UVa while the former has received 11 major college scholarship offers. Both players have been offered by Virginia.

I also plan to catch up with the aforementioned Richardson for his thoughts on UVa, early enrollment, and more.
