This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Three high school seniors - Benedictine (Richmond, VA) 4-star combo guard Robert Johnson, Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.) wing Marial Shayok, and Greater Atlanta Christian (Atlanta, GA) forward Isaiah Wilkins - were in Charlottesville this past weekend, making official visits to the University of Virginia. Wilkins was so impressed that he decided to end his recruitment early and verbally commit to the Cavaliers.

"Decided to end my recruiting a little earlier than expected ... I am officially committed to the University Of Virginia!!! #Hoos #UVA" - Wilkins wrote on Twitter early Sunday afternoon.

Wilkins is a 6'7", 190-pound combo forward the Virginia coaches see developing into a "4." Per GAC head coach Eddie Martin, Tony Bennett and company have likened Wilkins to current Cavalier Akil Mitchell, who entered college with a similar frame and skill-set.

This week, I will have a full follow-up report on Wilkins' decision, including quotes from Wilkins and his head coach. I also plan to have the latest on Johnson and Shayok, two of Virginia's top remaining targets in the class.

  • Scott Stadium will be chalk full of prospects for this Saturday's match-up against the highly ranked Oregon Ducks. I'll have my free report on those confirmed recruits in attendance up postgame Saturday night, so stay tuned for that and any other breaking news that may happen.
  • I'll also have the first edition of my "Week In Review" segment, a look at how UVa commitments performed on the high school gridiron the previous weekend. I'll also have a "The Week In Recruiting" feature up where I provide a look at what happened in the world of recruiting the previous week, as well as what notable developments may be coming up.

Wilkins Commits To Virginia
The University of Virginia men's basketball program has scored a verbal commitment from senior Isaiah Wilkins, a 6'7", 190-pound forward out of Greater Atlanta Christian in Atlanta, GA. Wilkins gives Virginia its second commitment in the class of 2014, joining 4-star guard BJ Stith.

Fisher-Davis Set To Make First Official Visit
Charlotte Christian (Charlotte, N.C.) senior Matthew Fisher-Davis has a reputation for being a 3-point marksman. Development in other areas this offseason helped the 6'5" shooting guard reach major Division 1 recruit status, as this summer he earned scholarship offers from Georgia, Vanderbilt, Virginia, and Wake Forest. UNC is giving Fisher-Davis a serious look as well.

In Case You Missed It

Recent Sabre updates ...

The Sunday Sampler 2013 - BYU
Image: Maurice CanadyAgainst BYU, Virginia knew it would face a hurry-up spread offense and the Cougars didn't disappoint by running 93 plays at Scott Stadium on Saturday. The Cavaliers countered with strategic planning from defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta, who elected to use his substitution packages for most of the game. Read about that and more in The Sunday Sampler.

What They're Saying: Harold On BYU
Image: Eli HaroldSophomore Virginia defensive end Eli Harold put in a stellar performance to open up the 2013 football season. Harold camped out in BYU's backfield much of the evening, racking up 11 tackles with 3.5 of them for loss. He sacked Cougars' quarterback Taysom Hill twice. Read about Harold's thoughts on Chris Long and more in this "What They're Saying" feature.

Photo Gallery: Virginia 19, BYU 16
Image: David WatfordVirginia defeated BYU 19-16 on Saturday in spite of a 2-hour storm delay, driving rain to start the second half, inefficiency on offense, and several turnovers. Special teams came through for the 'Hoos with several key plays including a 53-yard field goal by Ian Frye, a blocked punt by Anthony Harris, and an incredible effort from punter Alec Vozenilek (13 punts for an average of 41 yards). Here's a 63-image gallery documenting the evening. The gallery is free. Enjoy.

Specialists Provide Key Plays In Win
Virginia squeaked out a 19-16 victory against BYU in its season opener Saturday. Specialists Alec Vozenilek and Ian Frye played a key role in the win as the special teams units put together a mostly solid outing. Frye's 53-yard field goal to end the first half tied the Scott Stadium record.

UVa Swipes Win From BYU
Image: Anthony Harris When Virginia brought in defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta to run an aggressive 4-3 defense this offseason, the Hoos hoped more turnovers came with him. Against BYU on Saturday, the first turnover of the Tenuta era arrived at a critical moment to help the Cavaliers capture a 19-16 victory at a soaked Scott Stadium.

We Are Going To Win
The long offseason is almost over. Virginia's new football coaches have installed their schemes. David Watford has been named the starter at quarterback. A potentially explosive defense is ready to enter attack mode. What's left before then? Some final thoughts and the pick.

Sabre TV: Soccer Teams Host Busy Weekend
Labor Day weekend is a busy one for the Virginia soccer teams. Both the men's and women's teams host two games over the holiday weekend. On Friday evening, two No. 10 teams visit Klockner Stadium as the women host No. 10 Penn State at 5:30 and the face No. 10 Louisville at 8 p.m. One ticket gets you into both matches Friday so the Hoos are hoping for a great home crowd.

5 Questions With Loyal Cougars
Image: David WatfordVirginia welcomes BYU to Charlottesville for both teams' season opener on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. with the game being televised by ESPNU. What can the Cavaliers expect from the Cougars? Charles Kano of Loyal Cougars (loyalcougars.com) answered five questions about BYU to help preview the match-up.

What You Need To Know: BYU Preview
Image: Dominique TerrellVirginia kicks off its season when BYU visits Scott Stadium at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Everything a fan needs to know - time, stadium policies, TV/radio info, match-ups to watch, Kris Wright's "Keys to the Game" for Virginia, and more - is in the weekly preview. Tune up for the Cougars!

Tailgating With Chefhoo 2013: BYU
I like to have themes for my tailgating articles, but to be honest, I'm having a hard time with BYU. The state bird of Utah is a seagull ... from California (seriously). The state vegetable is an onion. I know of no food that makes Utah famous. I'm at a loss here. However, my wife's family is from the North Shore of Oahu. On the northeast corner of Oahu, BYU has a campus. So I give you Hawaiian Style Spare Ribs.

Sabre TV: Brian Called Up To National Team
Virginia junior women's soccer player Morgan Brian has been called up to the United States Women's National Team roster for a Sept. 3 friendly. The 18-player team faces Mexico at 8 p.m. Tuesday at RFK Stadium in Washington DC. The game will aire live on Fox Sports 1. Sabre TV caught up with Brian to talk about the chance to join the team.

Wednesday Watch List: BYU
Image: Demetrious NicholsonThe Virginia football team opens its season this weekend when it welcomes BYU to Scott Stadium. The game is scheduled to kick off at 3:30 p.m. on ESPNU. What does the match-up have in store for the Cavaliers? TheSabre.com Editor Kris Wright provides a weekly "Watch List" so you know what wrinkles to expect from the opponent. Take a look.

Hoo Preview 2013: JHoo's Preseason Things
A new season is upon us. A largely new staff is in place. A new recruiting class has shown up on Grounds. A new quarterback is at the helm. A new system is in place on offense. A new system is in place on defense. A new system is in place on special teams. A new center on the offensive line, new leadership on defense, a largely new linebacker corps, a new starting tailback, a new offensive line shuffle, a new kicker, a new punter, a new schedule with BYU and Oregon coming to town ... Jeepers, there is barely anything to talk about, eh?

Hoo Preview 2013: Parks Aims High
Image: Kevin ParksVirginia's Kevin Parks is setting a high bar for himself this season. Flawless football. While in reality that's an unreachable goal, it is attainable as a mentality. As UVa's No. 1 running back, Parks believes that level of focus is needed with a challenging 2013 schedule ahead.

Depth Chart Surprises For BYU
When the week of the first game arrives each season, one of the hottest topics always becomes the depth chart. After all, that first press conference represents the first official depth chart update since the conclusion of spring practice. That remained true at Virginia's game week press conference Monday for BYU as several depth chart nuggets quickly caught the attention of fans and reporters alike.

Hoo Preview 2013: Jennings Continues Development
Image: Darius JenningsFor a player that finished in the team's top two spots in nearly every major receiving category last season, there hasn't been much hype around Darius Jennings this offseason. That's OK, though. Jennings said his year was good, not spectacular by his standards anyway.
