   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Ellis Shines In Victory

University of Virginia-bound running back Jordan Ellis had 27 carries for 125 yards and one touchdown as Peachtree Ridge (Suwanee, GA) won its season opener over Walton, 23-17.

Ellis, a 5'11", 210-pound senior, rushed for 850 yards and nine touchdowns his junior season. That's a solid year, especially considering the fact that he split carries with Walden Davis. Davis has moved to cornerback and Ellis is expected to be Peachtree Ridge's primary ball carrier this season.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity," Ellis said in a previous article on the EDGE, discussing his chance to be the No. 1 running back on his team in the 2013 season. "I've been training since the season ended. I'm ready. I feel like I'm a 25- to 30-carry a game back. I feel like I get stronger as the game goes on."

Nineteen of Ellis' 27 carries, 103 of his 125 yards, and his touchdown all came in the second half last Friday night. Click here to read the game story on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. This week, I plan to catch up with Ellis for comments on his performance, the team, UVa, and more.

Farrar Makes Return Trip

Upland (CA) senior CB/WR Jeffery Farrar was on Grounds this past weekend for the first time as a Virginia commit. I plan to catch up with him this week for comments on his latest UVa experience, so stay tuned.

Farrar announced his pledge to UVa earlier this month.

BYU Visitors

Virginia opens its 2013 season this Saturday against BYU. TheSabre.com will have a complete list of those prospects we confirmed to be in attendance this weekend, so stay tuned.

Basketball Recruiting News

As reported here last Friday, Greater Atlanta Christian (Atlanta, GA) senior Isaiah Wilkins is scheduled to take an official visit to the University of Virginia this weekend. This will be the first official visit for Wilkins, a 6'7", 190-pound forward. GAC head coach Eddie Martin says the Virginia staff likens Wilkins to current Cavalier senior Akil Mitchell.

Wilkins is also considering Memphis, Miami, SMU, and Wichita State.

We are working to confirm any other visitors for this weekend and will let you know when we do.

A pair of UVa class of 2014 targets hit the road this past weekend. 4-star combo guard Robert Johnson took an official to Indiana, while 4-star center Isaac Haas was in West Lafayette, Indiana, on an official visit at Purdue.

Prior to the weekend, Indiana was considered the strong favorite for Johnson, a 6'3", 175-pound prospect out of Benedictine (Richmond, VA). Obviously, the Virginia staff is hoping he does not commit and decides to draw out the process further. Johnson is also considering Georgetown, Florida State, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, and Virginia.

Haas, a 7'2", 275-pound senior, is scheduled to visit Wake Forest this coming weekend, Texas A&M the weekend of Sept. 6, and UVa the weekend of Sept. 20. UAB rounds out his final five.

This week, I plan to have an update on Charlotte Christian (Charlotte, N.C.) class of 2014 shooting guard Matthew Fisher-Davis, who has included Virginia in his final four along with Georgia, Vanderbilt, and Wake Forest. The 6'5" prospect is scheduled to go to Vanderbilt this weekend on an official. His Virginia trip is set for the weekend of Sept. 20.

Wilkins Includes UVa In Final 5, Sets Visit
The University of Virginia is one of five finalists for Isaiah Wilkins, a 6'7" rising senior forward out of Greater Atlanta Christian (Atlanta, GA). GAC head coach Eddie Martin also reports that UVa will be the versatile prospect's first official visit destination.

Jackson Feeling Good About OLB
Woodgrove (Purcellville, VA) rising senior Jordan "JJ" Jackson was in Charlottesville this past Saturday, watching his future team in action, talking football with defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta, and getting to know fellow University of Virginia football commitments. Following the visit, the 6'4", 220-pound Jackson is excited about the new Virginia defensive coordinator's initial plans for him.

Virginia will face each of the 14 ACC opponents, including newcomers Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Syracuse, during its 18-game league schedule. The Cavaliers will play four schools home-and-away (Florida State, Maryland, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech), five schools only at home (Boston College, Miami, North Carolina, Syracuse and Wake Forest) and five schools only on the road (Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, NC State and Pittsburgh).

Game Week Arrives for UVa Football

From Jeff White, VirginiaSports.com

At 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Virginia hosts BYU at Scott Stadium. A week later, at the same time, on the same field, UVa will take on Oregon, ranked No. 3 in The Associated Press' preseason poll.

Virginia, which opened practice Aug. 5, broke training camp Saturday night. The knowledge that traditional powers are coming to town has heightened the intensity of the Wahoos' preparations this month.

"When you're playing against some of the best teams in college football, you better get your act together, particularly when you're at home, or else you get embarrassed," London said. "And I think the players are excited about the challenges that present themselves. We feel pretty good about where we are, who we are, but [these games are] definitely a true barometer as to where you are, where you need to go. After next week, there are no do-overs."

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Basketball recruiting ...

Virginia landed its third commitment of the 2008 recruiting class last week, when 7-0, 230-pound South Kent (CT) star Assane Sene joined the list. A fast rising prospect, Sene chose Virginia over offers from Connecticut and Syracuse and interest from many other Division 1 programs.

A native of Senegal, Sene arrived at South Kent this March. He attended the NBPA Top 100 Camp in Charlottesville and also attended Virginia's Elite Camp this summer. He made official visits to Virginia, Connecticut, and Syracuse before committing to head coach Dave Leitao.

In Case You Missed It

Recent Sabre updates ...

Hoo Preview 2013: Fairchild's Offense Arrives
Image: Steve FairchildOne big question that has surrounded the hire of new Virginia offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild is exactly what type of offense he will use. From a philosophical standpoint, the idea is for a tough and physical team to build off of the running game first. From a schemes standpoint, it looks like the Hoos will be a pro-style multiple-formation team with plenty of the more modern spread wrinkles incorporated into that outline.

Hoo Preview 2013: Lambert Brings Talent To Depth Chart
Image: Greyson LambertGreyson Lambert has yet to take a snap in a college football game and he enters the 2013 season as the back-up quarterback for Virginia. Still, as coaches and players often remind us, that means he is just one play away from the big stage. That notion shouldn't concern Cavalier fans, however, because Lambert checks all the boxes when it comes to talent.

Sabre TV: Women's Soccer Opens Year For UVa
The long summer wait is finally over for Virginia fans as the women's soccer team kicks off the Cavalier sports year this weekend with the Klockner Classic. UVa faces VCU on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and plays Santa Clara on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Sabre TV caught up with the Hoos to talk about the event, which also features defending National Champion North Carolina.

Hoo Preview 2013: Underclassmen Hold OL's Key
Image: Ross BurbankThe last time Virginia football fans saw their team in full scrimmage action, things didn't go well for the offensive line. In April's Spring Game, the defense dominated the day and that prompted a front-line shuffle as the Hoos continued to install new offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild's system. Will the O-Line find its collective stride and help the Cavaliers win more in 2013?

Hoo Preview 2013: Romero Ready For Shot
There's a picture that Daquan Romero keeps in mind when he's playing football. It was snapped at his Senior Night at Phoebus High School. Walking on the field with him in that photo are Romero's mother, his sister, and his son. That's all the motivation he needs.

Hoo Preview 2013: Tenuta's D Arrives
Image: Jon Tenuta"Blitz from the time they get off the bus." That's what opposing coaches, fans, broadcasters and writers have been claiming for over two decades about the style of play of Virginia's new defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta. That generalization, however, misses the mark in terms of what Tenuta is about.
