This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne There was lots of news on the basketball recruiting front last week. In case you missed it, check out a summary of the latest developments in my free update posted last Friday. There are a few more notes to add ... St. Vincent-St. Mary (Akron, OH) rising senior Jalen Hudson plans to tour the University of Virginia today. The 6'5", 190-pound shooting guard grew up in Richmond (VA) but has never visited Charlottesville before. This visit will be an unofficial trip. UVa offered Hudson in July. Arkansas, Tulane, U-Mass, and Virginia Tech have since come through as well. Hudson is an athletic wing whose strong suit is getting to the basket and finishing. He averaged 14 points per game his junior season, which was his first at St. Vincent-St. Mary. He attended Benedictine in Richmond his freshman and sophomore years. Hudson, who is good friends with UVa class of 2014 commitment BJ Stith, plans to take many unofficial visits and possibly a few officials before committing. He is looking to sign in November. EDGE subscribers can read more on Hudson in this article posted last Tuesday. I plan to follow up with the promising prospect for comments on today's visit as well, so stay tuned. Mountain View (Mesa, AZ) rising senior center Payton Dastrup has been on Virginia's wish-list for a long time. In fact, Dastrup says UVa was the fifth scholarship offer he received. The coaches have also made the trek out to Arizona to recruit him. Dastrup has reciprocated the interest, naming Virginia as one of his seven finalists in a tweet last Friday. Arizona, BYU, Florida, Kansas, Ohio State, UCLA and Virginia are the finalists for the talented big man, who plans to take official visits before committing. We hope to reach Dastrup for further comments on his final list and where he plans to go from here in terms of visits. Dastrup is a member of the high school class of 2014 but plans to fulfill a 2-year LDS mission before enrolling in college. In essence, he is a class of 2016 target. Basketball recruiting news appears to be in full swing right now. On Saturday, August 17, Virginia plans to host its Elite Camp. TheSabre.com plans to be there for coverage, so stay tuned for more info this weekend. On the football recruiting front, Virginia landed a nice commitment last week from 6'1", 195-pound cornerback/wide receiver Jeffery Farrar, a product of Upland (CA). Farrar chose the Cavaliers over Cal and Arizona State. Read more about him on the EDGE, and this week I'll have the latest on the football recruiting beat as well.

Revitalized Brian Ready to Lead Cavaliers From Jeff White at VirginiaSports.com For many of UVa junior Morgan Brian's 20 years, soccer has kept her in almost perpetual motion. She's moved from city to city, training camp to training camp, tournament to tournament - sometimes from country to country - establishing herself along the way as one of the United States' most promising young players. "It feels weird when I'm not busy," Brian said recently. Since the calendar flipped to 2013, she's played with the U.S. under-23 team in La Manga, Spain; traveled to England with her UVa coaches and teammates; and been called into training camp with the U.S. national team, for which she made her debut June 15 in Foxboro, Mass. By Brian's standards, however, this has been a slow year. And that's good news for the Cavaliers. "She went to the 23s, but it wasn't like the past couple years where she wasn't around that much," Virginia coach Steve Swanson said. "She had a chance to work on her strengths, and she had a chance to [focus on] developing her game. That's much harder to do when you're traveling and you're doing camps and you're coming back in, to really hone in on things. "To have her around as much as she was in the spring was great. To have her here in the summer, being around the other players and working out, I think has been tremendous for her. It was never something she didn't want, but given her schedule it was difficult for her to do that." The Cavaliers, coming off a season in which they won the ACC title and advanced to the NCAA tournament's third round, open the season Aug. 23 against VCU at Klockner Stadium. Issue No. 415 - Oct. 12, 2009
This Week In Recruiting Morgan Moses ... One of Virginia's best - and certainly Virginia's biggest - 2009 class recruits was in attendance on Saturday for the Cavaliers big win over Indiana. 6-7, 330-pound offensive tackle Morgan Moses, a former Meadowbrook Monarchs (Richmond, VA) star, was in Charlottesville to see his future team in action. After signing with Virginia in February, Moses fell short of qualifying academically and enrolled at Fork Union Military Academy. We'll check in with FUMA postgraduate head coach John Shuman for the latest on the prized recruit, who is hoping to enroll at Virginia in January. In August, Coach Shuman told TheSabre.com that he was optimistic he could get Moses to UVa in January, but we'll check in to see if that remains the case. We'll also check with Coach Shuman on Cody Wallace, who also signed with Virginia in February. Wallace, an interior offensive lineman, actually enrolled at UVa during the summer only to withdraw and enroll at Fork Union. TheSabre.com hopes to have more on both prospects this week. Read SabreMail No. 415 here. |
