Moses, McGee Recognized

From UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Releases

Virginia senior offensive tackle Morgan Moses has been named to two preseason watch lists. He earned recognition from the 2013 Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List and the Outland Trophy Preseason Watch List.

The Rotary Lombardi Award is given to the nation's top college lineman or linebacker each year. Moses makes the watch list for the second season in a row. Moses is one of nine players from the ACC that is represented on the preseason watch list of 108 players and is one of three offensive tackles from the ACC. James Hurst (North Carolina) and Brandon Thomas (Clemson) are offensive tackles that join Moses on the list.

Moses is also an honoree on the prestigious 2013 Outland Trophy Watch List, an award that goes to the best interior lineman in college football, as selected by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). Moses makes the watch list for the second season in a row. Moses is one of 11 players from the ACC that is represented on the preseason watch list of 75 players and is one of four offensive tackles from the ACC. Cameron Erving (Florida State), James Hurst (North Carolina), and Brandon Thomas (Clemson) are offensive tackles that join Moses on the list.

Moses enters 2013 as a preseason All-American (fourth team) courtesy of the Phil Steele Preseason list. The senior offensive tackle has started 31 games for the Cavaliers on the offensive line and is one of 70 active FBS football players entering 2013 with at least 30 career starts.

Virginia junior tight end Jake McGee also has been recognized this month, earning a spot on the John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List. The honor is given to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. McGee was an All-ACC performer in 2012 with 28 receptions for 374 yards and five touchdowns. The five touchdowns were the fifth-most all-time by a UVa tight end in a season. McGee grabbed game-winning touchdown scores in the closing minutes against Penn State (1:28) and Miami (0:06).

UVa has a history with the Mackey Award as Virginia alum and two-time Super Bowl Champion Heath Miller (Steelers) won the award in 2004 as a Cavalier.

McGee joins Eric Ebron (North Carolina), Nick O'Leary (Florida State), Beckett Wales (Syracuse), Clive Walford (Miami), and Asa Watson (NC State) as representatives from the ACC on the watch list.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

This week's football recruiting coverage will begin with a "Strategy Session." The latest edition of this feature will focus on those top targets still remaining on the board. I'll also provide the latest scholarship breakdown and project how many available scholarships there may be in the 2014 Class.

Prospects we will focus on this week include ...

Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA) defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi, who is No. 5 on TheSabre.com's Preseason Top 40 list. Nnadi took an unofficial visit to Virginia Tech this past weekend, and I was able to catch up with him for the latest on his recruitment. The 6'2", 305-pound rising senior is seriously considering about six schools at this point. He wants to make official visits before making a commitment.

DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) wide receiver Cam Phillips. The speedy rising senior has narrowed his list of schools to five: Rutgers, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. He visits Virginia Tech on Monday, and following the visit I plan to catch up with him for the latest. The 6'0", 180-pound prospect took a visit to Virginia in late June.

Class of 2015 target Austin Clark. Rockbridge County High School's (VA) rising junior offensive tackle has been offered Duke, North Carolina, Penn State, Tennessee, and Virginia. UVa was the first school to offer. The 6'6", 285-pound prospect discusses UVa and more in this article.

Basketball recruiting is in full swing and we will have the latest news and notes on the University of Virginia's class of 2014 recruiting targets. Last week, the Hoos extended an offer to Benedictine (Richmond, VA) rising senior combo guard Robert Johnson, who has seen his stock blow up this spring and summer. He has subsequently added offers from Indiana and Memphis to go along with previous offers from Alabama, Villanova, Wake Forest, and more.

Also, 2014 post target Martin Geben (St. Maria Goretti/Hagerstown, MD) has named Virginia one of his four finalists, according to this Washington Post update. Geben won a bronze medal with Lithuania at the just completed FIBA U19 World Championships. The USA team, which included UVa center Mike Tobey, won gold at that event.

We hope to have the latest on Johnson and more on the basketball front as well this week.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Barnette Leaving Virginia Basketball Program

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia men's basketball head coach Tony Bennett announced Wednesday that sophomore guard Taylor Barnette (Lexington, Ky.) is leaving the Cavaliers' program.

"Taylor has informed me that he has decided to transfer from our program," Bennett said. "His main reason is that he wants a bigger role as a player at another school. His release will be granted and we wish him well."

The 6-3 Barnette averaged 2.6 points and shot 43.2 percent (19-of-44) from 3-point range in 26 games during his freshman season at UVa in 2012-13. Barnette, who started two games for the Cavaliers, tallied a career-high 13 points in a 68-50 win over St. John's in the NIT second round.

"I am grateful for the opportunity given to me by Coach Bennett and his staff," Barnette said. "I will miss all of the great people I have had the opportunity to live life with this past year, especially all of my awesome teammates."

Coming Soon

The Sabre has you covered when it comes to Hoo news. Here are a few of the articles to expect on the site soon:

  • Strategy Session: Sabre Recruiting Analyst Chris Horne gives you a big picture look at UVa football recruiting.
  • Summer Reading: Sabre Editor Kris Wright provides position by position analysis of the football team.

In Case You Missed It

Recent Sabre articles ...

Summer Reading 2013: Quarterbacks
Image: David WatfordIf you were writing about the Virginia football team's quarterback situation shortly after the 2012 season in November, the article would have included Michael Rocco. If you were talking about the position shortly after the New Year, the conversation would have included QB coach Bill Lazor. If you were pondering the position shortly after the Cavaliers wrapped up spring practice in April, the thoughts would have included Phillip Sims. For July's Summer Reading series, however, none of those names are included as an offseason of change defined the quarterback position.

Summer Reading 2013: Running Backs/Fullbacks
Image: Kevin Parks Virginia lost two running backs since the end of last season - one expected, one not - so a seemingly crowded situation became considerably less dense over the past several months. The good news is that two of the top three producers remain for the Cavaliers, while a highly coveted high school recruit joins the fold as well. The Sabre's "Summer Reading" series continues with a look at the backfield.

No Need For Alarm In Transfer Discussion
Image: Tony BennettWith guard Taylor Barnette announcing his transfer out of the Virginia men's basketball program this week, it sparked conversations throughout the fan base. The general topic: attrition under Tony Bennett. The Cavaliers have had nine players transfer during Bennett's four-year tenure to date.
