This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

On Wednesday of last week, the Virginia football program played host to a pair of Stonewall Jackson (Manassas, VA) prospects in class of 2014 cornerback Greg Stroman and class of 2015 defensive tackle Tim Settle. Also making the trek to Charlottesville was athlete Jay Payton, a Northern Virginia native currently enrolled in a postgraduate program at Atlanta Sports Academy. EDGE subscribers can read more on all three prospects in last Thursday's Sabre Scoop recruiting feature.

I also have a full report up on Payton, a 6'3", 235-pound prospect who landed an offer from coach Mike London last Friday night. Payton now eyes Virginia Tech's one-day camp on July 13, which figures to be an important day in the versatile athlete's recruitment. This week I plan to have more with Settle, a 6'3", 310-pound prospect with offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Virginia, and Virginia Tech, among others. Settle named UVa as his favorite school following last week's visit to Charlottesville, where he has now visited four or five times in total. As for Stroman, I will check in with him this week for the latest on his visit plans. The speedy prospect will likely visit Virginia Tech and Wisconsin in the coming weeks, but as of last Wednesday no definite plans have been set. Virginia and Virginia Tech appear to be the top contenders at this point for the Stonewall Jackson star.

Also this week ...

  • I plan to talk to Quin Blanding for his thoughts on last week's "The Opening" event, a prestigious invite-only national combine sponsored by Nike. The 5-star safety and Virginia commit earned praise for his performance last week.
  • Class of 2015 football recruiting is well under way and I'll take a look at the top in-state prospects this week. Settle is without question one of Virginia's top in-state targets in the class.
  • Basketball recruiting figures to kick back up again with a busy July that features several top AAU events, including the Nike Peach Jam, which runs July 10-14. We will have the latest on the UVa basketball front in the coming days and weeks. EDGE subscribers should check out Kris Wright's basketball recruiting Sabre Scoop posted last Thursday. The piece includes an excellent breakdown of UVa incoming freshman London Perrantes.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Major Programs In Hot Pursuit Of Settle
Image: Tim SettleLed by 5-star prospects Da'Shawn Hand and Andrew Brown, the state of Virginia certainly boasts a talented group of defensive linemen in the class of 2014. One of the nation's top rising junior defensive linemen resides in the Commonwealth as well. Tim Settle, a 6'3", 310-pound prospect out of Stonewall Jackson High School in Manassas (VA), already boasts offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Miami, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, South Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and more.

Recruiting Stronger Than Ever At Virginia
Ever since Mike London took over the head coaching reins from Al Groh, excellent high school football recruiting has been revived for the Cavaliers. In fact, recruiting may have never been this good in the history of Virginia football. No, that's not hyperbole.

Sabre Scoop: Perrantes' Fit And More
July is a busy recruiting month for basketball so the latest "Sabre Scoop" is full of hoops news and nuggets. This update includes a scouting report on Virginia freshman London Perrantes, one of last season's signees, as well as updates on Payton Dastrup, Robert Johnson, and the Nike Skills Academies. Stay tuned, as always, to the EDGE for recruiting notes and updates.

Mark Bernardino Announces Retirement

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia athletics director Craig Littlepage announced Monday (July 1) that Mark Bernardino will retire as the Cavaliers' head swimming and diving coach effective immediately.

"Today, after 35 years as the head coach of the men's and women's swimming and diving teams at the University of Virginia - in total 41 years, including my time as a student, athlete and assistant coach - I am announcing my retirement," Bernardino said. "It is a difficult day filled with mixed emotions and I have not come to this decision lightly. This job and this University, along with my family, have been my life and my passion for nearly as long as I can remember. But I come to this decision with confidence in the future."

Bernardino was Virginia's longest-tenured head coach, leading the Cavalier swimming and diving programs for 35 years, and was only the second head coach of the women"s program. He guided UVa to 27 Atlantic Coast Conference championships, the most in ACC swimming and diving history. His 16 men's conference titles are also an ACC record and the 11 women’s championships rank second in conference history.

In 2013, both the Cavalier men's and women's programs won ACC championships for the sixth consecutive season, the first time the feat has been accomplished by an ACC school.

Bernardino completed his career as one of the NCAA's all-time leaders in swimming and diving dual meet wins.

"I want to thank Coach Bernardino for his service to the University and his contributions to the Department of Athletics' success," said Virginia Director of Athletics Craig Littlepage. "Mark's career is one that will be difficult to be equaled and is notable for the competitive success of his teams and student-athletes, and also the academic achievements of his student-athletes.

"Coach Bernardino has not only won more ACC titles but he has also won more ACC Coach of the Year honors than any UVa head coach. He and his teams have set a standard of success that is exemplary."

Kevin Durant, Monica Wright Engaged

Over the weekend, Kevin Durant and Monica Wright revealed that they are engaged. Wright confirmed the news with the Minneapolis Star-Tribune's Kent Youngblood after her game on Sunday. Wright was the No.2 pick by the Minnesota Lynx out of Virginia in the 2010 WNBA Draft. The Lynx won the 2011 WNBA Championship and finished as the runner-up in 2012. Wright is UVa's all-time leading scorer after posting 2,540 points in her career. She is also the single season leader after recording 734 points in 2010. She ranks fourth all-time in steals with 372.

Site work at Sunrise Park began in fall 2010, and building started in March 2011 with several of the units fully completed and already inhabited. Most of the team worked on sodding the front and back lawns of three of the newly or soon-to-be completed homes. Several other players worked on fine-tuning the interior of one of the almost-completed homes, including removing spackling from windows, cleaning tub surfaces and brushing up paint on inside trim.
