Harris Sidelined With Foot Injury

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia senior guard Joe Harris (Chelan, Wash.) has withdrawn from the upcoming 2013 USA Basketball Men's World University Games Team training camp due to a stress reaction in his left foot, Cavalier head coach Tony Bennett announced Friday.

Harris is expected to miss 3-6 weeks with the injury. He was set to compete for one of 12 roster spots on the USA Basketball Men's World University Games Team during the training camp held June 24-30 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The 2013 World University Games will be held July 7-16 in Kazan, Russia.

"Obviously, we are disappointed for Joe because he was really looking forward to this opportunity with USA Basketball," Bennett said. "Joe has worked really hard and he was excited about competing and measuring his game against some great players. His senior season and future professional career are the main priorities moving forward. We'll ensure he gets the proper rest and rehabilitation, so he'll be ready for the 2013-14 season."

Harris earned All-ACC first-team honors in 2012-13 after leading Virginia with a career-best 16.3 points per game. He tallied 20 or more points in nine games, including a career-high 36 in a 73-68 win over Duke.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Commitment No. 8

The University of Virginia's football program hosted a one-day camp this past Saturday. Roughly 150 prospects were in attendance, and one is now a member of the Cavaliers' class of 2014.

Evan Butts, a 6'4", 227-pound rising senior tight end out of Episcopal Academy (Newton Square, PA), was offered a scholarship by coach Mike London during the camp. On Sunday, the news broke that Butts had committed, becoming the eighth rising high school senior to commit to the Hoos.

Boston College, Virginia, and William & Mary were the finalists, but UVa was the favorite by far. Once the offer came, Butts jumped on it.

"UVa was my first choice from the beginning," Butts said. "I'm thrilled. I'm so excited to get this opportunity."

Butts also plays defensive end at Episcopal Academy, but he is being recruited to play tight end and long snapper by Virginia. Stay tuned for a "Q&A" with the Cavaliers' latest commitment early this week.

Andrew Brown To Announce

5-star defensive lineman Andrew Brown will announce his college intentions this Saturday, one day before he heads off to Oregon for the start of Nike's The Opening, a prestigious invite-only combine featuring 162 of the nation's best high school football players (primarily rising seniors).

UVa is considered the consensus favorite for the Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA) star, who last week revealed a final five of Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Virginia, and Virginia Tech. If Coach London and company can pull off a pledge, it would give the program its second 5-star commitment in this class. We'll find out for sure on Saturday.

Also This Week

I'll have a new "Sabre Scoop", recapping all the June action that has transpired and looking ahead to what is to come the rest of the summer. Also included in this "Sabre Scoop" are notes from this past Saturday's Peanut City Shootout 7-on-7 competition and a summer of UVa's 2013 camps thus far.

Plus, I'll have an update on top class of 2015 defensive tackle Tim Settle. The Stonewall Jackson (Manassas, VA) standout boasts double-digit scholarship offers including one from UVa.

Finally, I'll be working hard on the in-state Top 40 for the class of 2014. The list will be released by the end of next week.

Butts Quick To Accept UVa Offer
Evan Butts, a 6'4", 225-pound tight end prospect out of Episcopal Academy (Newton Square, PA), participated in the University of Virginia football program's one-day camp this past Saturday. He showed well, earning a scholarship offer from head coach Mike London. One day later, Butts verbally committed to the Hoos over offers from Boston College, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Florida, Temple and others.

Tobey Makes U19 World Championship Team

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia sophomore forward/center Mike Tobey (Monroe, N.Y.) made the final 12-man USA Basketball U19 World Championship Team roster, announced early Tuesday morning by USA Basketball.

The roster features eight players with prior USA Basketball experience, including five players from last summer's USA U18 Championship Team that captured gold. The 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship will be held June 24-July 6 in Prague, Czech Republic.

The 6-11, 245-pound Tobey tallied 6.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game during his freshman season at Virginia in 2012-13. He scored a season-high 19 points against Wofford and an ACC-high 14 points at Wake Forest.

Joining Tobey on the final U19 roster are Michael Frazier (Florida), Aaron Gordon (Archbishop Mitty H.S.), Jerami Grant (Syracuse), Montrezl Harrell (Louisville), Jahlil Okafor (Whitney Young H.S.), Elfrid Payton (Louisiana at Lafayette), Marcus Smart (Oklahoma State), Jarnell Stokes (Tennessee), Rasheed Sulaimon (Duke), Nigel Williams-Goss (Findlay Prep) and Justise Winslow (St. Johns H.S.).

"Getting down to 12 is the real hard part because in a lot of respects we easy could have kept 14-15," said USA head coach Billy Donovan, who led the 2012 USA U18 Team to a 5-0 record, a FIBA Americas U18 gold medal finish and a qualifying berth for the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship.

ACC Champions: Virginia Defeats NC State, 1-0
UVa Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

The sixth-ranked and fifth-seeded Virginia men's soccer team won the ACC Championship on Sunday afternoon, defeating 20th-ranked and seventh-seeded NC State, 1-0. Will Bates (Chester, Va.) scored the game-winning goal in the 16th minute, while goalkeeper and ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player Diego Restrepo (West Palm Beach, Fla.) posted his eighth-consecutive shutout.

Virginia (14-3-3) was crowned conference champion for the first time since 2004, for the fourth time during head coach George Gelnovatch's tenure and for the 10th overall time.

"This is a tough, tough tournament, this ACC Tournament," Gelnovatch said. "I couldn't be more proud of our guys, the way they carried themselves, the way we started the year, where we came from. Winning an ACC Championship is fantastic."

Defense was again the storyline of the match, as Virginia has now played 837 minutes of soccer without allowing a goal. The Cavaliers shut out their eighth-straight opponent and 13th overall in 2009.

Restrepo finished with two saves and was named MVP after not allowing a goal in the tournament.

"Everybody just worked hard every day," Restrepo said. "It's a great group of people that work hard, and stay focused."
