Tobey Named U19 Team Finalist

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Following four training sessions involving 26 of America's top 19-and-under players, USA Basketball announced Sunday that Virginia sophomore forward/center Mike Tobey is one of 16 finalists for the U19 World Championship Team. The roster will be pared down to 12 before the squad departs on June 19 for three days of training at the Washington Wizards practice facility in Washington, D.C. The 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship will be held June 27-July 7 in Prague, Czech Republic. The finalists were selected by the USA Basketball Men's Developmental National Team Committee.

Tobey tallied 6.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game during his freshman season at Virginia in 2012-13. Joining Tobey as USA U19 finalists are Ryan Arcidiacono (Villanova), Damyean Dotson (Oregon), Michael Frazier (Florida), Marcus Georges-Hunt (Georgia Tech), Aaron Gordon (Archbishop Mitty H.S.), Jerami Grant (Syracuse), Montrezl Harrell (Louisville), Jahlil Okafor (Whitney Young H.S.), Elfrid Payton (Louisiana at Lafayette), James Robinson (Pittsburgh), Marcus Smart (Oklahoma State), Jarnell Stokes (Tennessee), Rasheed Sulaimon (Duke), Nigel Williams-Goss (Findlay Prep) and Justise Winslow (St. Johns H.S.).

"We had 26 really, really good players and all of the guys made the selection very, very difficult," said USA U19 and University of Florida head coach Billy Donovan. "I think the things that stand out about this team is just the athleticism; the speed and quickness; the ability to defend and put pressure on people; and offensive rebound."

Virginia head coach Tony Bennett is serving as an assistant coach under Donovan with the 2013 USA U19 World Championship Team. Bennett has guided the Cavaliers to a 76-53 record (.589 winning percentage) in four seasons. The Cavaliers have reached postseason play in each of the past two seasons, including the 2012 NCAA Tournament second round.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

This week will be filled with recruiting scoop and updates, including ...

Visitor News

The UVa football program hosted its annual 7-on-7 Tournament/Big Man Camp this past Saturday. While he was not participating in either event, 6'7", 275-pound offensive tackle Marcus Applefield of Weeki Wachee High School (FL) was on Grounds for an unofficial visit. Applefield visited seven schools last week with Virginia being the final stop. I'll have reaction from the standout rising senior this week.

On the basketball recruiting front, one of UVa's top low post targets in the class of 2014, Payton Dastrup, was expected to tour the Grounds on Sunday. I plan to have a full report on the Mesa (AZ) center's experience at UVa and the latest on his recruiting process.

NBPA Top 100 Camp Recap

TheSabre.com was on hand for last week's NBPA Top 100 Camp, which included UVa commitment B.J. Stith and targets such as Dastrup and power forward Angel Delgado. This week I'll have a full recap that will include comments from these players and more, as well as my observations on these and other players.

Camp News

So far in June, the football program has hosted a one-day camp and the aforementioned 7-on-7 Tourney/Big Man Camp. Another one-day event will take place this Saturday. I will have news and notes and follow-up from the first two camps, and we plan to cover Saturday's event as well. As always, if there is any breaking news in terms of a commitment, stay tuned to TheSabre.com for the latest.

Rankings

The initial release of my in-state top 40 (Preseason edition) will come in late June, or the first week in July at the latest. My annual top 40 is a ranking of the state's top high school senior prospects. The first list comes out during the summer and will be followed by a Postseason ranking in December.

UVa-bound safety Quin Blanding will be in the top three. Blanding is one of three in-state class of 2014 recruits with a consensus 5-star ranking, joining Woodbridge (VA) defensive end Da'Shawn Hand and Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA) defensive lineman Andrew Brown.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Stroman Scores Two Major Offers
When asked to describe his starting quarterback, rising senior Greg Stroman, Stonewall Jackson (Manassas, VA) head coach Mike Dougherty offered the following: "As a person, you cannot find a nicer kid. He is well-mannered and he comes from a great family. He is the type of kid I'd let babysit my kids. And he's a heck of a player." A humble personality, Stroman is "all business" on a football field according to his coach.

Brian Makes US Women's National Team Debut

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia rising junior midfielder Morgan Brian made her debut for the United States Women's National Team in a 4-1 victory over South Korea on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium. She became the seventh Virginia player to earn a cap with the full national team when she entered the game as a substitute in the 77th minute.

Brian is only the second Cavalier to make an appearance for the national team while still an active player for Virginia. In 1991, Amanda Cromwell earned her first cap before the start of her senior season.

"It was a great feeling to play my first game with the national team," said Brian. "It was everything I expected and more. It was a dream come true tonight in Boston."

Former Virginia defender Becky Sauerbrunn (Class of 2007) also played in Saturday's game, playing the full 90 minutes as she made her 43rd appearance for the United States.

The United States Women's National Team will return to action on Thursday, June 20, with another friendly against South Korea. That match will be played at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. and will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network.

5 Million Gift For New Track And Field Facility
UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Amy Mitchell Griffin, a 1998 University of Virginia graduate and former volleyball player for the Cavaliers, has pledged $5 million for the construction of a new track and field facility at UVa. The Virginia Athletics Department announced the gift on Monday (March 28). The commitment by Griffin allows the athletics department to move forward with the design and construction of a new track and field facility. The Virginia Athletics Foundation (VAF), the fund raising organization for the athletics department, has launched a campaign to raise the remaining amount needed to finance the approximately $14 million project.

Griffin's gift is the largest commitment ever made for an Olympic sport capital project at the University of Virginia. She is a current member of the VAF Board of Trustees and previously donated $1 million in 2006 to support the volleyball program and also funded UVa's new sand volleyball courts.

"The University deserves a top notch track and field facility. I feel we owe it to current and future student-athletes," Griffin said. "I look at it as an important athletic department facility, but more importantly an upgrade for the entire University. I really do hope there are many people in the University of Virginia community, especially former athletes - track and non-track - who see this as a key piece in future athletic success and one that they want to support.

"The new space will allow the track team to compete for championships and will help with recruiting and training for a large number of athletic teams at the University. It is my hope that this project will raise the game for Virginia Athletics in so many ways."

Crossover Scheduling Frustrates Fans
Image: Taquan MizzellThe ACC announced the league's 12-year schedule for rotating division crossover opponents last week. It's safe to say that fans from schools around the league didn't jump for joy when reading the news. Conference expansion along with this crossover opponent model has destroyed regular meetings with teams in the other division and, simply put, fans don't like it.

Silverstein, Hoos Finish Run
Scott Silverstein took the mound at Davenport Field for the last time Sunday night. The stadium clock read 8:55 when he handed the ball to his skipper for the last time in orange and blue. It didn't end the way he would have wanted and yet, I doubt he'd change a thing.

Mississippi State Eliminates UVa
Image: Brandon DownesIf Virginia has learned anything in its last two Super Regionals in Charlottesville, it is that you need a lot of offensive firepower to top teams wearing shades of red. In 2011, Oklahoma ousted UVa from the NCAA Tournament with 10-7 and 11-0 victories. This time around, Mississippi State's bats bounced the Cavaliers to the tune of 11-6 on Saturday and 6-5 in the two-day series finale.
