D.A.D.s Day

Join Richmond Sports Radio 910's Wes McElroy and the Richmond Flying Squirrels this week to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation through the D.A.D.s Day event.

D.A.D.s Day was started by McElroy in honor of his father, Frank, who was diagnosed with diabetes in 1998. Frank is alive and well today and living a healthy lifestyle, but McElroy knows that all sons aren't as lucky as him because others have lost loved ones to this disease. Throughout this week, please join McElroy for D.A.D.s Day Events (starting Friday, June 7 through Friday, June 14) to donate your $1 toward the fight against diabetes. For six years, McElroy and the Richmond Flying Squirrels have capped off the week's events with D.A.D.'s Day at the Park in honor of Father's Day weekend. For more information, click here. To make an online donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, click here. To see the listing of D.A.D.s Day events this week (where you can get a Yo, McElroy! D.A.D.s Day t-shirt with a $5 donation), click here.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

This week promises to be a big one for recruiting coverage on TheSabre.com.

On the football front, I will have a "Sabre Scoop" with reflections and notes from UVa football's one-day camp that took place this past Saturday. In the report I'll have the latest on a pair of rising senior prospects who toured the Grounds on Saturday: Gilman (Baltimore, MD) outside linebacker Melvin Keihn and Stonewall Jackson (Manassas, VA) athlete Greg Stroman. Keihn has been a top target of UVa for some time, while Stroman left Charlottesville with an offer from the Cavaliers.

Stroman earned an offer from Virginia Tech the previous weekend, so his stock is rising. As the Raiders' starting quarterback last season, the 6'0", 170-pound prospect totaled more than 3,000 yards of offense. He is seen more as a wide receiver or defensive back on the next level.

Keihn, a 6'2", 220-pound prospect, boasts double-digit FBS offers. His decision could come down to UVa and Maryland, the latter being next on his visit schedule. Virginia Tech and others have offered as well.

This weekend, UVa will play host to another class of 2014 target in Weeki Wachee (FL) offensive tackle Marcus Applefield. One of the hottest prospects around, the 6'7", 275-pound Applefield landed 16 offers in a span of 30 days during the Spring Evaluation Period. UVa was one of those offers he received. Check out more from the standout prospect himself in an EDGE article due out soon.

Also this week, I plan to have a full in-depth report on new commit Jordan Ellis, a running back who pledged to the Hoos last Friday night while on a visit. Ellis hails from Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee, Georgia.

Basketball-wise, the NBPA Top 100 Camp comes to John Paul Jones Arena this week. TheSabre.com will be on hand for coverage of the event, which will feature UVa-bound guard B.J. Stith. Stay tuned for more on Stith as well as other UVa targets participating in the camp.

Basketball recruiting fans should also check out my report on class of 2014 combo guard Devin Mitchell from last Friday. UVa has offered the 6'4" prospect, a product of Collins Hill High School (Suwanee, GA).

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. To sign up for an EDGE subscription, please check out the Sabre EDGE Sign Up and Information Page. If you're already on board as an EDGE subscriber, click the links below to catch up on recruiting.

Peach State RB Commits To UVa
Multiple outlets report and TheSabre.com has confirmed that Jordan Ellis, running back out of Peachtree Ridge High School (Suwanee, GA), has verbally committed to the University of Virginia. Ellis, who also had offers from Miami (OH) and Western Kentucky and interest from major FBS programs such as Arkansas and Wisconsin, gives the Hoos seven commitments in the class of 2014.

5-Star Brown Talks Recent ACC Visit
Image: Andrew BrownThe coming months will be important for consensus 5-star defensive lineman Andrew Brown. He does not plan to commit by the end of summer, but he does hope to determine which five schools he will take official visits to this fall. Therefore, the 6'4", 290-pound rising senior will use the rest of the spring and the summer to further explore his options.

Lambeth: Virginia's Father Of Athletics

About The Author: Kevin Edds is the Writer/Director of the documentary Wahoowa: The History of Virginia Cavalier Football. You can purchase the DVD from our sponsor UVA Bookstores (click here). For more information on the film, please visit www.UVaFootballHistory.com. TheSabre.com periodically features articles on the history of UVa athletics where Edds, an alumnus, highlights some of the most interesting moments and people in the history of Virginia sports. Email Kevin here.

A Tar Heel in Cavalier country doesn't find himself easily acclimated to the ways of a Virginia Gentleman. As the son of a Major in the Confederate Army growing up during the difficult Reconstruction Era, William Lambeth arrived at UVa to study medicine in 1890. There were no dormitories, no First Year Facebooks, no ice-breaker mixers to help integrate him into the culture of the University. Yet when he found himself drawn to the burgeoning athletics program at UVa, not only did he carve out a niche for himself in Charlottesville, he ultimately would revolutionize the way we play sports, not only at the University but across the country.

The UVa Board of Visitors unanimously approved the creation and installation of a memorial plaque made of Buckingham slate to be installed at Lambeth Stadium at the Colonnades, but not the finances to cover it. Article author Kevin Edds and his family provided funds in advance to cover the not inexpensive production of this long-overdue memorial, but would greatly appreciate your help. If you would like to make a small donation to the William Lambeth Memorial Plaque Fund, click here.

License Plate section is up in Wahoowa!

In recent months, SabreMail made a request for anyone who had license plates that reflected your status as a Hoo fan. The responses have started to trickle in and the Plates Photos are up and running the Wahoowa! section of the site. The Wahoowa! section of the Sabre is dedicated to all things associated with UVa Fan-dom. There are various fan-related areas including desktop wallpaper, Fan of the Week photos, V-Sabres Worldwide, and more. If you have suggestions for new and interesting things in the Wahoowa! section, please email us at [email protected] with the header: Wahoowa! suggestion.

We'd like to keep adding photos to the section so if your license plate shows that you're a Hoo fan, let us know so we can include you in our gallery. All you need to do is snap a picture of your license plate and email a jpeg version of the photo to [email protected] with the email header: License Plate Photo.

Issue No. 88 - May 22, 2003

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

UVa ended the week with a bang, getting a verbal commitment from 5-10, 195 pound William Campbell running back Cedric Peerman. Peerman becomes the second verbal commitment of the 2004 class, joining St. Anne's Belfield defensive tackle Chris Long. Both prospects are ranked in the top 10 overall in the state of Virginia, giving the Cavaliers a great start in in-state recruiting.

As a junior, Peerman rushed for 2,048 yards. He scored 50 total touchdowns. Peerman has the breakaway speed needed for Division I running backs and also possesses great hands, which are necessary to be a running back in Al Groh's system.

Recent Sabre articles ...

Lost Identity Costs Virginia
Image: Reed GragnaniVirginia's identity for the last decade has been world-class pitching, consistent fundamental defense, and an above-average, execution-driven offense. And when the Hoos live up to two-thirds and sometime even one-third of their identity, they win more often than not. When they fail to deliver on all three aspects as they did against the Bulldogs, however, they sometimes can win but not against a quality SEC opponent like MSU.

Bulldogs Blast Cavaliers
Image: Brandon DownesStarting pitcher Brandon Waddell got roughed up early and often in the opener of the 2013 Charlottesville Super Regional as Mississippi State (47-18) pounded out 20 hits, a season high by a Virginia opponent and lit up the scoreboard in an 11-6 win. The loss means the Cavaliers will need to win games Sunday night and Monday afternoon to return to the College World Series for the third time in five seasons.

Hoos Try To Stay Sharp
When the postseason rolls around in college baseball, the routine automatically changes for teams. Gone are classes and exams. Gone are mid-week games against non-conference teams. Gone are graduation plans for seniors. The shift in weekly dynamics requires some planning by the coaches.

FanWatch: UVa Still No. 1 For Pezhoo
Image: Robb Fish Robb Fish, Pezhoo on the message boards, remembers some plays from the 1990 football campaign like they just happened last season. Among Virginia fans, he's likely not alone as that team ascended to the nation's No. 1 ranking behind an explosive offense and defense with names like Shawn Moore, Herman Moore, and Chris Slade. Fish looks back at his student days fondly as a fan.
