UVa Back In NCAA Tournament Semfinals

UVa Athletic Media Relations Official Release

The Virginia men's tennis team reached the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive year and for the sixth time in the past seven years with a 4-0 victory over Tennessee in a quarterfinal match Saturday at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Illinois. The Cavaliers (28-0) will meet Georgia in the semifinals on Monday, while the Volunteers end their season at 23-8.

"It was another good match today and I congratulate Tennessee on playing a good match too," said head coach Brian Boland. "It was back and forth there for a while. They made it tough on us early in the singles, but the guys stayed composed and kept working and things eventually shifted our way."

The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point for the 26th time in 28 matches this season. In a battle of two of the top four teams in the nation at No. 1, fourth-ranked Jarmere Jenkins and Mac Styslinger used a late break to capture a 9-7 win over top-ranked Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese. At No. 3, Justin Shane and Julen Uriguen raced out to a 5-1 lead en route to an 8-4 victory over John Collins and Edward Jones to clinch the point.

In singles, the Cavaliers used the momentum from doubles and won four of the six first sets to take control of the match. Alex Domijan extended the lead to 2-0 with his 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2 over Reese. The match at No. 1 singles featured two of the top three players in the ITA singles rankings. Top-ranked Libietis won the first set over third-ranked Jenkins 6-4, before Jenkins returned the favor by winning the second set 6-4. On the final point of the second set, Libietis fell awkwardly as he approached the net and suffered a leg injury. He attempted to continue playing in the third set but retired after falling behind 3-0 in the decisive set, giving Jenkins the victory.

"I was just trying to play the match as if he was still healthy," said Jenkins. "I wanted to keep my focus in that third set. He was playing extremely well over the first two sets, so it was tough to see that happen."

For the second consecutive match, it was Styslinger who recorded the final point for the Cavaliers. He topped Collins 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 singles to punch Virginia's ticket to the semifinals. Styslinger is the only Cavalier to have a singles victory in all four NCAA Tournament matches this year.

The Virginia-Georgia semifinal match will begin at 1 p.m. CT (2 p.m. ET) Monday. Fans can watch matches online here. Fans can follow along with other Wahoos on the tennis message board. Finally, for more on the Cavaliers, read Jeff White's latest article at VirginiaSports.com here.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Football Recruiting

EDGE subscribers, for a big picture look at Virginia football's class of 2014 recruiting, check out the latest "Strategy Session" feature I posted last Friday. The feature includes the latest roster updates and scholarship breakdown, a look at the needs in the class of 2014, and some important dates to remember in the coming months.

The running back position made headlines last week with the announced transfer of Clifton Richardson, but of all of Virginia's needs in this class, the defensive line - both end and tackle - is the most important in my opinion. Early this week, I'll have an update on newly offered defensive end Deonte Holden of DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD). The 6'4", 220-pound rising senior has earned 12 offers in total with the Cavaliers being the latest.

The WCAC, which features DeMatha and Good Counsel, has become a fixture of Virginia football recruiting. The Cavaliers landed three Good Counsel products in last year's class and inked defensive end Michael Moore in the class of 2012. The Hoos have offered a handful of WCAC prospects in this year's class, including four from DeMatha.

I'll have more football recruiting info out this week, including an update on class of 2013 signee Tim Harris and the latest from the class of 2014 recruiting trial.

Off The Board

Charlotte (N.C) West Mecklenburg quarterback Jalan McClendon and St. Sebastian's (MA) linebacker Connor Strachan, two rising senior prospects with offers from Virginia, committed elsewhere. McClendon pledged to NC State, while Strachan verbally committed to Boston College.

Basketball Strategy Session

This evening, I'll have a "Strategy Session" focused on men's basketball recruiting. In this feature I will examine the possible needs in the 2014 and 2015 classes, and I'll have a list of those prospects Tony Bennett and company have offered at this point. Also, TheSabre's Kris Wright gives his take on Virginia basketball recruiting to date and a look ahead at what's to come.

Also, the NBPA Top 100 will return to Charlottesville again this year. The 2013 edition takes place from June 13 through June 15.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Richardson Leaving UVa

UVa Athletic Media Relations Official Release

Virginia football head coach Mike London announced Thursday (May 16) that junior running back Clifton Richardson (Newport News, Va.) is leaving the Cavaliers’ program. He will have two years of athletic eligibility left.

“Clifton Richardson has been granted permission to seek a release from his scholarship to pursue opportunities elsewhere,” said London. “Clifton will be leaving the University in good academic standing. I wish the best for Clifton as he pursues his academic and athletic goals.”

Richardson appeared in 20 games during his UVa career, including all 13 as a true freshman in 2011. During Richardson’s rookie campaign, the running back rushed 72 times for 366 yards and two scores. Hampered by a lower extremity injury in 2012, Richardson appeared in seven games and carried the ball 24 times for 59 yards. He leaves UVa with 96 career carries for 425 yards and two scores. Richardson also made two career receptions for 26 yards and one touchdown.

Cain Set to Visit
By Chris Horne

Virginia will entertain 6-9, 205 pound forward Jason Cain of John Bartram High School (Philadelphia, PA) this weekend on an official visit.

"He's leaving tomorrow," said John Bartram head coach Lou Biester. "He's excited - at least as excited as Jason can get. He's also considering UNC Greensboro, Indiana, and Villanova right now."

Cain, who began his high school career as a 6-1 guard, has grown eight inches over the last three years. Possessing the size of a center, his skills are suited more for a small or very athletic power forward.

"Jason is very athletic," said Biester. "He can handle the ball and he was the team's best passer. He averaged 15 points, 12 rebounds, six blocks, and eight assists in leading us to a Public League Championship title. He's not a center, though. He faces the basket. The player he reminds me of in terms of style is Arizona's Luke Walton. He can do it all - even shoot the three. Jason needs to work on his three-point shot, but he can do it."

According to Biester, neither Villanova, Indiana, or Virginia have officially offered Cain a scholarship, however he feels they all will soon. Cain is one of Virginia's primary remaining targets for the Spring 2002 signing period.

Spring Superlatives - Most Difficult To Predict
Image: David WatfordWhen it comes to Virginia football, you can't go more than a few days without talking about the quarterback question. You know, the "who is UVa's starter" question. Or the "will Mike London platoon quarterbacks" question. Or the "will any quarterback emerge as a star" question. No matter how you frame it, however, the quarterback position remains the biggest piece of the puzzle at Virginia. So with that in mind the next stop for the Spring Superlatives series is "Most Difficult To Predict."

Spring Superlatives - Most Likely To Be Consistent
Image: Kevin ParksThe Sabre's Spring Superlatives series rolls along as Cavalier fans ponder the possibilities for the 2013 football season. So far there have been articles on "Most Depth," "Most Likely To Surprise," and "Most Potential" at the end of spring practice. This time, the focus is dialed in to "Most Likely To Be Consistent" for the Hoos. Which position looks like it could produce week in and week out?

Spring Superlatives - Most Potential
Image: Eli HaroldIn preparing for the 2013 season, I've decided to take a look at the Virginia football team through "Spring Superlatives." Things kicked off with "Most Depth" and "Most Likely To Surprise" articles. The next installment should be a fun one because there is a lot of room for debate I think. Which position for the Cavaliers has the "Most Potential" for the 2013 campaign?
