Miller, Jenkins UVa's Top Athletes

UVa Athletic Media Relations Official Release

Caroline Miller (women's soccer) and Jarmere Jenkins(men's tennis) were honored as Virginia's top female and male athletes for the 2012-13 academic year at UVa's annual awards dinner on Wednesday at the John Paul Jones Arena. Miller received the IMP Award as the top female athlete and Jenkins garnered the WINA Award as the top male athlete.

The 2012 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, Miller set single-season school records with 20 goals and 47 points this season. The conference leader in goals and points, Miller was a 2012 NSCAA first-team All-American and became the first Cavalier to be named a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, the nation's top individual women's soccer award.

The Rockville, Md., native ended her season on a school-record eight-game goal-scoring streak and was named first-team All-ACC for the second consecutive season as well as being selected to the ACC All-Tournament team when Virginia won the 2012 ACC Championship. Miller ended her career with 45 goals and 109 points, both ranking second in school history. She was selected 10th overall by the Washington Spirit of the National Women's Soccer League and is currently playing her rookie season with the club.

Jenkins has led the Virginia men's tennis team to the most successful era in school history. Over the past four years, the Atlanta, Ga., native and four-time All-ACC selection has guided the Cavaliers to four ACC Championships, three ITA National Team Indoor Championships and two NCAA runner-up finishes. The 2012 ACC Player of the Year, Jenkins has posted 132 career singles wins (third in school history) and 101 career doubles wins (10th in school history) heading into this year's NCAA Championships. He has participated in the NCAA Singles Championship and NCAA Doubles Championship in each of the last three seasons, earning All-American honors in singles and doubles in both 2012 and 2013.

In November, Jenkins won the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship singles title, becoming the fifth Cavalier to win one of college tennis' three major individual tournaments. Last month, Jenkins climbed to the No. 1 spot in both the ITA singles and doubles rankings, becoming just the third player in the last decade to be simultaneously No. 1 in singles and doubles while playing for the nation's top-ranked team, joining former Cavalier Somdev Devvarman(2008) and Georgia's John Isner (2007).

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

This week on the football recruiting front, I plan to check in with two of UVa's top remaining in-state targets in the class of 2014: T.C. Williams (Alexandria, VA) defensive tackle Jeremiah Clarke and Bishop Sullivan (Virginia Beach, VA) wide receiver Jamil Kamara.

Clarke has recently added Tennessee and Virginia Tech to his list of offers, which previously included UVa, North Carolina, and Penn State, among others. The 6'5", 270-pound prospect has spoken recently of plans to make his college choice by the end of this month. I'll check in to see how firm those plans are and where UVa currently stands on his list. At last check, Virginia and Penn State appeared to lead the way with the Cavaliers seemingly having the edge.

Kamara, a 6'2", 200-pound receiver prospect, recently narrowed his list of schools to nine: LSU (no offer), Miami, North Carolina, NC State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. UVa is the leader as of now, but the talented wideout is not looking to make a commitment until the fall. We'll see if an earlier decision could happen.

In addition to checking in on these prospects, I'll also see if anything new pops up on the football recruiting front throughout this week. UVa currently boasts four verbal commitments in the class of 2014: 5-star safety Quin Blanding, 4-star offensive lineman Steven Moss, sleeper defensive end/outside linebacker JJ Jackson, and Gary Wunderlich, who is rated by two prominent kicking organizations as the top place-kicking prospect in his class.

On the basketball recruiting front, I hope to check in this week with class of 2014 center Martin Geben and class of 2014 wing Devin Robinson. Geben, a 6'9" prospect out of Maryland, scored an offer from the Hoos following a solid performance at the Nike EYBL in Hampton the last weekend in April. Robinson has not been offered by UVa, but he is on the radar. He hails from Christchurch School in Virginia.

Scales Named ACC Men's Lacrosse Freshman of the Year

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official News Releases

Tanner Scales has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Freshman of the Year, an honor voted on by the league’s four head coaches.

Scales (Denver, Colo.) leads the nation’s freshmen with 25 caused turnovers and only two sophomores in the nation have more than the UVa defenseman. The 25 caused turnovers also rank No. 22 in the nation overall.

Scales becomes the first UVa player to win the award since Steele Stanwick in 2009. He is also the first UVa defensemen to win the award since Mike Schattner in 1988, the first of UVa’s 11 recipients. Goalie Tillman Johnson in 2001 is the only other non-offensive player to win the award for UVa.

A Post Worth Reading

TheSabre.com basketball message board hummed with excitement this weekend after the Cavaliers swept the rival Hokies. Below is one of the more interesting posts on the future of UVa hoops.

Subject: I wish Tony and the boys could hear all the things being said around Durham/CH
Posted by: Mr Wahoo on Sun Feb 20 2011 8:56:12 AM
Message: Not talking about the general week to week fanbase smacktalk etc. - I am talking about the in depth conversation about programs, coaching, development, and the future.

There is a TREMENDOUS amount of respect coming from long-time Heels and Devil fans. I have a few large donors as clients. To a man, they all think TB is THE MAN. They LOVE what they are seeing, even in the losses. A lifelong Dukie told me yesterday that UVa is his 2nd team now, and he's never had one before. One guy, who played with UNC years ago, and is now mayor, says he thinks if UVa can hold on to TB, that within a short while the discussion won't be whether or not TB is one of the top 4, but whether he is the TOP coach in the ACC. In fact, he says right now, his opinion is TB's "better than Ole' Roy."

Hoozier and BEASTHOO are privy to a lot of talk where they work in Chapel Hill - every day, folks find out they are Hoos and begin spouting off about how much they love Tony Bennett and the kind of players he is bringing in.

Old Woody Durham has seen them all for years and he gushes over Tony. Hoozier talks to him fairly regularly. Sat in a business club meeting in Chap Hill last week, was quiet while they talked of Tarheels, but when I mentioned I was a UVa guy - the focus shifted to me exclusively and it was all praise for UVa - it sure was nice baby.

On Dave Glenn's ACC show last week, some guy calls in and asks if Tony Bennett would be a fit at NCSU - Dave said "WHAT!!?? Tony is already one of the top 4 coaches in the league hands down! He is getting the attention of top recruits. UVa has the best facilities in the nation and is a top destination for many reasons! Why would anyone think he would do that? No folks, Tony Bennett is going to be at UVa FOREVER !! Get used to it! - And if I was a UVa fan I would be extremely excited about the future." He was very animated about this and it sure felt good to hear.

Win or lose yesterday, or next game, Tony has got this thing running the right way. These players, shorthanded, have all bought into a strong, principled system of basketball. They will be singing Tony's praises to recruits.

Something really good is cooking in CVille and all the neighbors can smell it.

Familiar Names Dot Defense At UVa
Image: Brent UrbanWhen the Virginia football team released its post-spring depth chart, the offensive side of the ball drew the most attention and overshadowed the defense in some ways. A quarterback competition and unforeseen shuffling on the offensive line will do that. Looking at the defense after the spring, however, held no surprises. The Cavaliers need to replace production in some key spots, but they have a lot of talented contributors returning. Let's take a look at the post-spring depth chart for the defense.

O-Line Shuffle Raises Eyebrows
Image: Luke BowankoWhile Virginia's quarterback race holds the top conversation spot this offseason, the offensive line isn't far behind. The UVa football team released a post-spring depth chart last week and an O-Line shuffle caught everyone's attention. After all, the front five struggled through an up-and-down 2012 season and the new depth chart reflects the move of the line's best two players. Simply put, the coaches are looking for cohesion, consistency, and better run blocking ... and they still hadn't found the right mix by the end of 15 spring practices.

Quarterback Race Carries On
Image: Phillips SimsThe Virginia football team released a post-spring depth chart last week and the offensive side of the ball drew the most attention. Discussion trended that way for two reasons: the quarterback competition and an offensive line shuffle. Both categories left Cavalier fans concerned heading into the summer. First, let's look at the quarterback spot where David Watford, Greyson Lambert, and Phillip Sims are eyeing the top spot for the 2013 season.
