Men's Tennis Wins ACC Title UVa Athletics Media Relations Official News Releases The Virginia men's tennis team won its seventh consecutive ACC Championship, its ninth title in the past 10 years, with a 4-1 victory over Wake Forest Sunday in the ACC Tournament final at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on the campus of Duke University. The Cavaliers (24-0) rallied from dropping the doubles point to down the Demon Deacons (20-8) with four straight set wins in singles. "It was a great match and it feels good to win another ACC Championship," said head coach Brian Boland. "I was happy with how we performed today. It wasn't easy. Congratulations to Wake, they played a great match. I am really proud of [Wake coach] Tony Bresky, who worked for me for 10 years. He has Wake in the ACC final and the top 20 nationally in his second year there. It is a real tribute to him and his hard work that they have already reached this level." Wake Forest took an early advantage in the match by winning a doubles point filled with rain interruptions and a change of venue. The Cavaliers rallied in singles, winning five of the six first sets to grab momentum in the match. Julen Uriguen, who was named ACC Tournament MVP by going 2-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles during the week, gave Virginia the lead with his 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6 and Virginia went on to win the title. "Every championship we have won is just as special as the first," said Boland. "Each year, we have had a chance to experience this with a different group of guys. Each group has its own personality, but the consistent thing is the joy they feel winning this title. This conference is so strong and has just a great history, that every player knows what an honor it is to be an ACC Champion." The Cavaliers earn the ACC automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The field of 64 will be unveiled on Tuesday and first and second round action will occur at 16 campus sites on May 10-11. Read the full news release here. This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne Hampton (VA) was the latest stop in Nike's Elite Youth Basketball League. TheSabre.com was on hand for the Saturday session (games began on Friday and ran through Sunday). I'll have info and reports on those UVa targets (mainly class of 2014 and class of 2015 prospects) I was able to watch and interview in an upcoming "Sabre Scoop" feature on the EDGE. Included in the coverage is a report on class of 2015 point guard Jalen Brunson, who said this past weekend that he has been offered by Creighton and the University of Virginia. I had the opportunity to watch Brunson play twice on Saturday, and I was impressed with the poise and basketball savvy he showed as just a sophomore. Brunson is the son of former Temple and NBA point guard Rick Brunson, who also served as Director of Basketball Operations at UVa under Dave Leitao from 2007-2009. On the football front, the Spring Evaluation Period is well underway, so stay tuned for the latest on any new targets on the Cavaliers' radar. Also this week, I'll have an article on Pennsylvania native Andrew Ford up on the site. Ford, quarterback MVP at the recent Nike Camp in Ashburn (VA), has not been offered by UVa but is certainly on the radar. The rising senior standout said after the NFTC that Virginia would take one quarterback in this class, and the next step with his recruitment was throwing in front of new offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild. In light of the recently released post spring depth chart, I'll have another class of 2014 "Strategy Session" up later this week. I'll provide a recap of the latest news as well as my top remaining rising senior targets. UVa has four commitments overall in this class, including recently committed defensive end/outside linebacker Jordan "JJ" Jackson.

Aboushi Drafted By Jets UVa Athletics Media Relations Official News Releases Virginia senior offensive tackle Oday Aboushi was selected by the New York Jets during Saturday's NFL Draft. Aboushi was taken in the fifth round as the 141st overall pick. It marks the 30th consecutive year (dating back to 1984) a Virginia player has been drafted. Tied with Florida State, the streak is the second longest in the ACC, trailing only Miami who reached 39 straight years during the 2013 draft. Aboushi is the first Cavalier drafted by the Jets since D'Brichashaw Ferguson was selected No. 4 overall in the 2006 NFL Draft. Aboushi is also the eighth overall Cavalier to be drafted by the Jets. Aboushi earned an early selection to the 2013 Senior Bowl roster, an honor as one of the top players in the country at his position. Aboushi, a first-team All-ACC honoree, graded out over 90 percent in all 12 games, including 97 percent against Miami and 94 percent against Penn State. Aboushi was also named the Touchdown Club of Richmond's Offensive Lineman of the Year. Aboushi played both offensive tackle and offensive guard at Virginia. Also saw time at both positions during the 2013 Senior Bowl.

Issue No. 195 - June 24, 2005 This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Football recruiting ... Virginia added two more players this week - one to the 2005 class and the other for 2006. Pasadena City College (Pasadena, CA) punter Ryan Weigand became the 24th member of UVa's 2005 recruiting class. In search of another punter, the Cavs scoured the nation this spring until they found Weigand, a 6-1 1/2, 175-pound prospect who averaged 40.3 yards per punt last season. Weigand, who had originally committed to Tulsa but did not sign any scholarship papers, visited Virginia last week and decided to go with the Wahoos. ... Coach Groh and company continued their run of 2006 verbal commitments this week, when 6-4, 240-pound Conestoga (Wayne, PA) inside linebacker recruit Mark Herzlich (pronounced Hertz-lick) came aboard. Herzlich chose the 'Hoos over Boston College and also has offers from Duke, Louisville and Vanderbilt. As a junior last season, Herzlich racked up 145 tackles including three sacks. He plays inside linebacker in Conestoga's 5-2 defense, which is similar to Virginia's 3-4. Besides his intelligence (4.5 GPA, 1320 SAT), Herzlich is intense, athletic (he also plays lacrosse) and very strong - he benched 185 pounds 29 times at the Nike camp at PSU earlier this year. Herzlich gives the Cavs a second inside linebacker recruit in the 2006 class, with Trenton Central (Trenton, N.J.) star Almondo Sewell being the other. Read SabreMail No. 195 here. |
