This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

UVa played host to several top rising senior targets last week, including Yorktown (Arlington, VA) defensive back MJ Stewart and Thomas Dale (Chester, VA) safety CJ Reavis. Check out the latest on these two prospects and more in the "Sabre Scoop" article linked below.

Memphis University School (Memphis, TN) rising senior place-kicker/punter Gary Wunderlich is expected to make an unofficial visit this week to Texas A&M, which right now is Virginia's main competition for the talented prospect. I will catch up with Wunderlich for more on his recruitment this coming weekend, so stay tuned.

UVa's Spring Game takes place on Saturday, April 6. The event is typically a solid recruiting event for the Hoos, so this year should be no different. We'll be on hand for coverage of the event, including which recruits were in attendance and recruiting reports.

During the week, be sure to check out my latest "Strategy Session." This latest big picture feature focuses primarily on the cornerback and safety positions, detailing the depth expected to be in place in the 2014 season and analyzing the needs at those positions. Of course, UVa is off to a great start in recruiting the safety position with a commitment from 5-star Quin Blanding, a player with the potential to make an impact as soon as he steps on Grounds.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. UVa Women's Golfers Win Bryan National Collegiate

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official News Release

Behind the hot finish of junior Elizabeth Brightwell, the No. 15 Virginia women's golf team won the Bryan National Collegiate in Browns Summit, N.C. The victory was UVa's first tournament title since September of 2010 and is the fifth in the program's history. The tournament featured one of the toughest fields of any regular-season event as 14 of the 17 teams were ranked in the Golfstat top-50 poll including four squads that were ranked in the top 10.

Virginia shot 7-over 295 during Sunday's final round, its highest 18-hole score of the three-day, 54-hole event, to finish at 5-over 869. Arkansas, ranked No. 6, was second at 873. The Cavaliers opened the event by posting a school record score of 7-under 281 during the first round.

Brightwell posted birdies on three of her final four holes to help secure the win for the Cavaliers. Brightwell's finish helped her to a fourth-place finish at even par 216. The tournament was the best in her college career. She recorded her top finish, best 54-hole score and lowest single-round total, a 4-under 68 she carded during the opening round. Virginia All-American Brittany Altomare posted the team's best score, finishing second at 4-under 212. She shot 72 Sunday, but could not hold the overall lead as Georgia's Emilie Burger used a 3-under 69 during the final round to claim medalist honors at 5-under 211. Altomare recorded the 18th top-10 finish during her career, tying her with Leah Wigger for the most in UVa's history. It was the fourth time this season Altomare has posted a top-three finish. UVa sophomore Briana Mao recorded her third top-10 finish this spring with a seventh-place finish at 3-over 219. Mao shot 73 during the final round. Portland Rosen was 23rd overall at 222 and Nicole Agnello was 62nd at 232.

The Bryan National Collegiate was UVa's final regular-season tournament. The Cavaliers will participate in the ACC Championships in Greensboro from April 19-21.

This Week In Recruiting by Chris Horne

Landstown (Virginia Beach, VA) tight end/wide receiver Kyle Dockins and Norfolk Christian (Norfolk, VA) linebacker Kwontie Moore were in Charlottesville on Saturday for the Idaho game. TheSabre.com caught up with Dockins, who was fresh off his team's big Beach District win over Bayside. The 6'4", 215-pound senior recalled being swept into the Cavaliers locker room following the dramatic overtime win over Idaho.

"It was crazy. I actually got my clothes all wet," Dockins said with a laugh. "Coach London was screaming. All the players were going crazy."

Dockins further discusses the experience at Scott Stadium on Saturday and much more in an EDGE article coming out this week. I also hope to have more with Kwontie Moore, who is one of UVa's top defensive commits in the 2012 class.

The two commits weren't the only top prospects in Charlottesville this past weekend. Also there, TheSabre.com confirmed, was Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) junior tailback Taquan "Smoke" Mizzell. Mizzell is considering several major FBS offers, including one from Virginia. We hope to check in with the talented prospect for his thoughts on the Cavaliers program and more.

Virginia Spring Football Scrimmage Highlights the QBs, RBs and DBs
Image: Khalek ShepherdVirginia held an open football practice and live scrimmage at Scott Stadium on Saturday. The event saw only a handful of spectators and nearly an equal number of media and recruits. Head Coach Mike London was especially interested in seeing how his quarterbacks would fair in a more game-like environment. But it was Khalek Shepherd who stole the show.

Double Bonus: NIT
Image: Joe HarrisThe Virginia men's basketball team wrapped up its season with a disappointing 75-64 loss against Iowa in the NIT. The defeat snapped a 19-game winning streak at the John Paul Jones Arena and prevented a trip to New York for the NIT Semifinals. Still, these Cavaliers succeeded quite a bit during the 2012-2013 schedule and the "Double Bonus" kicks off with a look at a few of those accomplishments.

Iowa Ends UVa's Season
Image: Justin AndersonThe Virginia men's basketball team lost just two games at home this season. Unfortunately, both losses short-circuited NIT runs and prevented the Hoos from making a trip to Madison Square Garden. Delaware dealt the first defeat to UVa in November's preseason event, while Iowa came to town on Wednesday night and ended the Cavaliers' season with a 75-64 victory.

Watford Shows Growth From Redshirt Season
Image: David WatfordDavid Watford didn't expect to redshirt last fall. So when the quarterback competition for the Virginia football program settled and shuffled Watford into a second-year redshirt, it was hard for him. After getting over the initial disappointment, however, Watford embraced the opportunity and rededicated himself to his development.

Quick Take: Kye Morgan
Image: Kye MorganOf the four players listed at tailback this spring, Virginia football fans have seen three players in action. Kevin Parks, Clifton Richardson, and Khalek Shepherd all have logged carries for the Cavaliers in their careers. The fourth, Kye Morgan, redshirted as a freshman last fall but he's hoping to enter the fray and make a name for himself in the orange and blue. TheSabre.com caught up with Morgan after practice for a "Quick Take" interview.
