UVa Announces Football Series with Boise State

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Releases

The Virginia men's swimming and diving program captured its sixth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on Saturday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C. It is the Cavaliers’ 14th ACC title in the last 15 years. UVa finished with 759.5 points, followed by Virginia Tech (597), North Carolina (549), Florida State (534), NC State (481), Georgia Tech (269.5), Duke (268), Boston College (120) and Miami (13 – diving only).

"This one feels really good mainly because of the chemistry our guys have developed over the last 365 days," UVa coach Mark Bernardino said. "They're a very special team to me. I can't say enough about their character and work ethic; they came to practice every day with a positive attitude. They're not a team of superstars, they are just a flat-out awesome team. We pride ourselves on being a consistently good team. Our swimmers work hard every day to make each other better and that's makes a team with strong, strong depth. Teams can come at us in waves, but we can respond because of our depth and character."

Virginia becomes the first ACC school to win both the men's and women's swimming and diving titles six consecutive years.

With this title, Bernardino now has 27 ACC Championships, passing Frank Comfort of North Carolina for most ACC swimming and diving championships. This is also Bernardino's 16th men's title, which passes Don Easterling of NC State for the most ACC men's swimming and diving crowns. He also has 11 women's titles, which is second-most in the conference. Bernardino, who is in his 35th year at Virginia as head coach, now sits in fourth place in ACC history for coaching titles in any sport, behind only track and field/cross country coaches Dennis Craddock (40 for UNC and Virginia), Rollie Geiger (40 for NC State) and Jim Kehoe (38 for Maryland).

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Football Recruiting

No question, the big news last week was Quin Blanding's verbal commitment to the University of Virginia. In case you missed it, check out Sabre TV on the right side of the home page for the 5-star junior safety's press conference. Also check out the "Sabre Scoop" feature linked below for more on the Bayside star and info on UVa class of 2013 recruits Taquan Mizzell (RB, Bayside) and Corwin Cutler (QB, Ocean Lakes).

This week, I'll take a look ahead to what other prospects will be coming out of Bayside High School in the coming years. The school has developed into quite a pipeline for UVa. Mizzell arrives in Charlottesville later this year, and he'll join former Marlins standouts Henry Coley, Tra Nicholson, and Anthony Cooper.

Also this week, I'll check in with a pair of top in-state juniors including Chancellor (Fredericksburg, VA) offensive tackle Steven Moss and Thomas Dale (Chester, VA) safety CJ Reavis. Both prospects were in attendance for the Duke/UVa basketball game last Thursday. I'll have reaction from those two on that experience as well as the Blanding commitment.

Basketball Recruiting

UVa-bound senior point guard Devon Hall guided Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) to the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools regular season title and postseason tournament championship. The Dolphins' run for a second consecutive state championship was halted by Bishop O'Connell last week in the VISAA, Division 1 state semifinals. This week, I hope to catch up with Hall for a look back on an excellent career at Cape Henry and a look ahead to his freshman season at the University of Virginia.

Crespi (Encino, CA) fell short in its bid for a CIF Southern Section Division 4-AA title, losing in the semifinals to Serra. UVa-bound senior point guard London Perrantes and the Celts (22-9) next meet LACES High School in the opening round of the state playoffs this Wednesday.

Brunswick (Lawrenceville, VA), which features UVa-bound junior wing guard/wing forward B.J. Stith, escaped the first round of the VHSL AA Division 3 playoffs with a 24-22 win over Loudoun Valley. The Bulldogs take on Fort Defiance in the semifinals this Tuesday night. The winner meets the winner of Bruton/Spotswood in the state championship on Saturday at 1 p.m. at VCU's Siegel Center in Richmond.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Kostelac Sweeps ACC Freshman of the Year Honors
UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia's Anthony Kostelac has been named the 2011 ACC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year, as voted on by the league's 12 head coaches and announced Friday by the conference office. Kostelac, the 2011 ACC Men's Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year, becomes the third-straight Cavalier to earn the league's top rookie honor, as sophomore NCAA Champion Robby Andrews earned the accolade last year and junior All-American Morgane Gay was tabbed the women's freshman of the year during the 2009 outdoor season.

In addition, Kostelac is the fifth student-athlete in league history to claim the awards for both the indoor and outdoor seasons, and the second Cavalier to do so. Andrews was tagged the top rookie during both seasons last year.

Eagles Eke Past Hoos
Image: Akil MitchellLife on the ACC road has not been kind to the Virginia men's basketball team, particularly after big home wins. That unfortunate pattern continued Sunday afternoon in the northeast. Fresh off an upset of No. 3 Duke on Thursday night, the Cavaliers sputtered down the stretch and fell 53-52 at Boston College. UVa owns a 2-6 record away from home this conference season.

Boston College Primer No. 2 2013
The Virginia men's basketball team won its 16th straight home game against Duke on Thursday to remain undefeated in ACC play at the John Paul Jones Arena. Now, however, the Hoos head back to the conference road where they are 2-5 to take on Boston College. Here are 10 things to consider before the match-up.

Double Bonus: Duke
Image: Joe HarrisWelcome to the list, Duke. The Virginia men's basketball team took down the Blue Devils 73-68 on Thursday night, a victory that extended the program record John Paul Jones Arena winning streak to 16 games and gave coach Tony Bennett the only missing win from the current ACC opponent list. This game featured a bunch of strategy notes and the "Double Bonus" takes a closer look at some of the keys to UVa's victory.

UVa Dismisses No. 3 Duke
Image: Joe HarrisTo extend its record winning streak in the John Paul Jones Arena, the Virginia men's basketball team needed to do something it had yet to do under Tony Bennett. Beat Duke. On a night where Joe Harris gave a virtuoso performance for the ages with a nomination-worthy supporting actor performance from Akil Mitchell, the Hoos did just that by leading wire to wire in a 73-68 victory.

Duke Primer 2013
After a game-ending 37-14 run turned a close encounter against Georgia Tech into an 82-54 blowout, the Virginia Cavaliers (19-8, 9-5 ACC) are back in action at home on Thursday night for a pivotal encounter against the Duke Blue Devils (24-3, 11-3 ACC). Will the Wahoos win their 16th straight game at the John Paul Jones Arena or fall victim to Duke for the 6th straight time since Tony Bennett took over as head coach? Find out in the Duke Primer.

Double Bonus: Georgia Tech 2
Image: Joe HarrisThe Virginia men's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a convincing 82-54 win against Georgia Tech on Sunday. The Cavaliers pulled away over the last 14 minutes to easily take care of the Yellow Jackets, but there were some key themes throughout that led to the victory. The "Double Bonus" takes a closer look at some of the storylines in the win.
