Men's Tennis Captures Indoor Title

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Releases

The top-ranked Virginia men's tennis team won its fifth ITA National Team Indoor Championship in six years with a 4-2 victory over second-ranked USC in Monday's final at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Cavaliers (6-0) won the doubles point and used straight set victories at the top three singles positions to deny the Trojans their second straight title.

"I am so proud of this team and what they accomplished this week," said head coach Brian Boland. "During the last two matches, there were times where we kind of had our backs against the wall and we handled the adversity well. Every guy played a role and stepped up when the team needed them. This is another stepping stone for our program, to win another National Indoor Championship. We now have to get ready for the outdoor season and continue to get better to accomplish the goals this team has for itself."

It marked the third time Virginia and USC had met in the final of a national tournament. The Trojans downed the Cavaliers in the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Finals. Even though the teams had met in each of the last four years in the NCAA Tournament, Monday's match was the first meeting at ITA National Team Indoors.

"Playing USC is always a challenge," said Boland. "They have a great program and we have so much respect for them. We have had a lot of great battles with them in the past, and today was no exception, and we know that there will be more to come in the future. We look forward to it because the high level of our matches is why college tennis is so great."

Virginia won an unprecedented four consecutive ITA National Team Indoor Championships from 2008 to 2011, including winning the title in Seattle in 2008 and 2011. The Cavaliers' five overall NTI championships ranks third in ITA history, behind Stanford (12) and UCLA (7).

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Tuesday night will be a big night for the University of Virginia men's basketball program, which takes on Miami, and for its recruits - class of 2013 signees Devon Hall and London Perrantes, and class of 2014 commitment BJ Stith, who are all in postseason action.

Hall, a 6'5", 205-pound point guard, helped Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) to a 23-3 overall record and a Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools regular season championship. The Dolphins went undefeated in conference play. On Tuesday, the TCIS postseason tournament begins with quarterfinal matchups.

Perrantes, a 6'1", 185-pound point guard, scored four points in the final 1:03 to help Crespi (Encino, CA) defeat Maranatha, 66-61, in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs last Friday. On Tuesday, Crespi (21-8) will meet Price in the quarterfinals. Crespi is the no. 7 seed while Price, which has lost only three games on the season, is the No. 2 seed.

Stith, a 6'5", 195-pound wing guard/forward, guided Brunswick (Lawrenceville, VA) to a Southside District postseason tournament crown last week. The Bulldogs host New Kent in the opening round of the Division 3, Region 1 playoffs on Tuesday. Head coach Bryant Stith and company are seeking their third straight state championship.

We will continue to track the postseason efforts of the UVa men's basketball's recruits. Also this week, we'll hit the football recruiting front with two "Strategy Sessions" and a "Sabre Scoop."

The latest "Sabre Scoop" will be out first. Among other things, I plan to have the latest with the Hoos' lone commitment so far in the class of 2014, Victory Christian Academy (Lakeland, FL) defensive tackle Chris Nelson. The 6'3", 285-pound junior picked up an offer from South Florida over the weekend.

Next, I'll have a "Strategy Session" focused on the offensive line, wide receiver, and tight end positions. Later in the week, I'll examine the defensive line, analyzing the depth chart and examining what you can expect in class of 2014 recruiting.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
