Hokies Vs. Hoos Food Fight

The 9th Annual Hokies vs. Hoos Food Fight presented by Martin's pits Virginia Tech fans against Virginia fans to see which school can raise the most donations for the Central Virginia Food Bank. Last year, the two fan bases provided 75,000 meals to Central Virginians in need!

The Food Fight competition takes place between the two basketball games featuring UVa and Virginia Tech. So the Food Fight begins this Thursday, Jan. 24 as the Cavaliers travel to Blacksburg and ends on Feb. 12 when Hokies head to Charlottesville. There are three ways to earn points for your team:

  • 1. Donate online at this link! Donations accepted from 1/24-2/12. ($1=5 points)
  • 2. Donate non-perishable food items or monetary donations at your local Martin's grocery store! Donations accepted from 1/28-2/10. (1 food item=1 point)
  • 3. Volunteer to sort food at the Central Virginia Food Bank on Thurs. 1/31 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.! (1 two-hour shift=100 points)

The Hoos have won the Food Fight four years straight and lead the series 5-3 all-time. Entering the final days of the competition (ends midnight Tuesday after the VT-UVa game), Virginia led the 2013 food fight with 17,149 points vs. 10,368 points from the Hokies.

Make sure to support this great cause and the Hoos!

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

I'll check in on UVa men's basketball's class of 2013 and class of 2014 recruits and look at what's in store for each as the 2012-2013 season enters playoff competition. Class of 2013 point guard Devon Hall is looking to lead Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) to a second VIS State Championship, while class of 2014 wing B.J. Stith is eyeing a third straight Virginia Group AA Division 3 State Championship for Brunswick's varsity boys' basketball squad (Lawrenceville, VA).

London Perrantes, a senior point guard out of Crespi (Encino, CA), guided his team to a 19-8 record in the regular season. Playoff action for the Celts begins this Wednesday against Centennial (Compton, CA).

On the football recruiting front, National Signing Day for the class of 2013 occurred last Wednesday. TheSabre.com was there for full coverage, including full class analysis last Friday and more. This week, I will check in with Alpharetta (GA) offensive lineman George Adeosun and Mills Godwin (Richmond, VA) offensive lineman Eric Tetlow for a look into their Signing Day decisions.

Adeosun, whose stock skyrocketed in recent weeks, announced for the Hoos over Arizona State and Georgia on Signing Day. Tetlow switched his commitment from Wake Forest to UVa just past midnight on Feb. 6.

In addition to looking back at those two recruitments, we'll continue to look ahead to the class of 2014 with the latest "Strategy Session." This week's "Session" will focus on the offensive line and tight end positions, breaking down who is in the program and where the staff may look in class of 2014 recruiting.

Also this week, I hope to have the latest on in-state junior tailback/defensive back recruit M.J. Stewart. Stewart, a product of Yorktown High School (Arlington, VA), is a player Virginia has coveted since last summer, when the Cavaliers extended an offer. Maryland and Virginia Tech have offered as well.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. The class, ranked in the Top 30 nationally by two major recruiting outlets, features top playmakers such as 5-star running back Taquan Mizzell and 4-star corner Tim Harris while also filling key needs such as offensive line.

UVa Picks Up Pair Of ACC Titles

The Virginia men's tennis team, expectedly, and men's track and field team, unexpectedly, claimed ACC Championships over the weekend. Brian Boland's No. 1 ranked tennis team topped Wake Forest 4-0 on Sunday, while Jason Vigilante's track and field squad tied Florida State with 141 points.

For the men's tennis program, the win marks the third consecutive ACC Tournament title and the fifth in the past six years. With the victory, the Cavaliers have won 45 straight matches against ACC opponents. Dominic Inglot, who plays at the No. 1 singles spot for UVa, took home ACC Tournament MVP. The Cavaliers receive the ACC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament; the field of 64 will be announced on April 28.

"I am really proud of this championship," Boland said in a news release. "We lost three of the best players in the country last year in Somdev Devvarman, Treat Huey and Teddy Angelinos. It says a lot about the young men on this team that they were able to step up this season. They saw it as an opportunity to play higher in the line-up. They worked harder in the offseason and the results showed that. We have won five of the last six ACC Tournaments, but this one is really special."

The men's track and field program, meanwhile, recorded its best-ever finish and the first-ever men's conference title in an outdoor season. Sophomore Adams Abdulrazaaq won the ACC title in the 110m hurdles by running a personal-best time of 14:16 and senior All-American Yemi Ayeni captured his third-straight conference title in the discus with a throw of 189'7" to lead the Cavalier charge. In total, UVa posted 11 all-conference performances throughout the weekend.

"Our conference championship has a proud tradition of great performances and we're honored to be champions with such a tremendous program as Florida State," Vigilante said in a news release. "Our team competed with integrity and with heart, and I'm so proud to coach all of these young men. It's a great day for our University and for the track and field program."

Clemson Primer 2013
