   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

As I mentioned last week, I'll have a series of "Strategy Sessions" articles leading up to National Signing Day, which is next Wednesday, Feb. 6. These "Sessions" will be broken down by positions. The first, which will be out early this week, will focus on quarterbacks and running backs, examining how UVa has recruited those positions in the past, which recruits are coming in this class, and what the need will be in the Class of 2014.

Of course, this week we'll also keep you updated on the latest developments on the Class of 2013 recruiting front. The Cavaliers received two pieces of good news last week, when postgraduate defensive tackle Tyrell Chavis and safety Malcolm Cook reaffirmed their commitments. Both players closed off the recruiting process and will sign with the Hoos.

Virginia's top remaining target right now appears to be Georgia prep product George Adeosun, an offensive tackle out of Alpharetta High School. Adeosun saw his recruitment flourish last week, when he picked up offers from Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Purdue. He landed an offer from Virginia the weekend of Jan. 18-20, while on an official visit in Charlottesville. Adeosun took an official to OU last weekend, and I'll check in with him again for the latest. I'll also check in on Varina (VA) cornerback Tim Harris and his commitment status with the Hoos.

Speaking of the Class of 2014, Hermitage High School (Richmond, VA) boasts two junior offensive line prospects with college potential. One is center Marius Young, a first-team all-district performer each of the past two seasons and second-team all-state pick this past season. Coach Patrick Kane updates the latest on those and other prospects in his program, which has been one of the most successful high school football programs in the state the past decade.

Last Saturday, touted Hermitage running back Derrick Green verbally committed to the University of Michigan. Green is the No. 3player in my Postseason In-State Top 40 rankings. UVa, which has a commitment from my No. 4 recruit, RB Taquan Mizzell, was eliminated by Green early on in his process.

Also this week, I'll have more on in-state sophomore offensive lineman Matt Burrell, a player the Cavaliers could be close to offering. The 6'5", 265-pound Chancellor High School (Fredericksburg, VA) offensive tackle already boasts offers from Clemson and North Carolina.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Florida speed at UVa?

Mike Farrell is reporting on The Wagon Online that superstar cornerback Devin Hester has two favorites, Miami and Florida State. That's not a big surprise considering the clout of those two programs, the distance from Hester's home in Riviera Beach, Florida, and the fact that neither of those two schools have problems retaining top in-state talent.

Virginia does have one advantage over those two schools in this case. Hester is looking for immediate playing time at wide receiver, a position where UVa desperately needs speed and talent, and Miami and Florida State often red-shirt their incoming freshmen. Hester has visits lined up with those two schools, as well as Purdue, Missouri and Virginia. Hester's visit to Charlottesville on January 11th will be his last recruiting visit. That works to UVa's advantage, as long as he doesn't commit elsewhere before his visit.

Double Bonus: FSU, VT

Wahoos Grab Win Against VT
Image: Evan NolteThe Virginia men's basketball team struggled in its first two ACC road games, committing a combined 29 turnovers while making just 8 total 3-pointers in losses at Wake Forest and Clemson. The Hoos reversed both of those trends when they traveled to Blacksburg on Thursday night and it paid off. UVa made a season-high 11 triples and recorded just 6 turnovers en route to a 74-58 victory against rival Virginia Tech.

Indoor Facility On Schedule For Spring
