   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

The University of Virginia football program played host to more than 20 official visitors this past weekend. There were 19 verbal commitments on Grounds, but there were a few targets as well. Throughout this week, I'll have updates from the big weekend. A "Sabre Scoop" article will provide initial news and reports on the subject.

On the EDGE board, news is already up on commitments Kirk Garner, Andre Levrone, Jr., Eric Smith, and Connor Wingo-Reeves. One of the main topics addressed is new defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta, who has drawn positive reviews so far from recruits.

"He seems like a real tough coach, which is what you want, especially on the defensive side of the ball," Wingo-Reeves said of Tenuta.

Smith, an offensive line prospect out of Georgia, seemed very excited about his first ever experience at UVa. He had verbally committed prior to the visit but came away very impressed.

Following the weekend, it appears as though Fork Union (VA) defensive back Malcolm Cook is solid in his commitment to the Cavaliers. He posted on Twitter that he was closing the door on recruiting and heading to UVa.

I plan to have more with Cook as soon as possible. Stay tuned to the EDGE Board for any new news and reports, today and throughout this week.

As Feb. 6 Signing Day approaches, I'll have a series of "Strategy Session" articles focused on how Virginia has recruited certain positions in the past, the impact class of 2013 recruits may have on each position, and look ahead to where the focus of 2014 recruiting may be. Those articles will begin this week.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. To sign up for an EDGE subscription, please check out the Sabre EDGE Sign Up and Information Page. If you're already on board as an EDGE subscriber, click the links below to catch up on recruiting.

Hall Leads Cape Henry To Big VISAA Win
Image: Devon HallOn Tuesday night, Benedictine's Cadets (Richmond, VA) played host to Cape Henry Collegiate's Dolphins (Virginia Beach, VA) in a match-up of two teams ranked in the top four in the latest VISAA state rankings. In what felt like a playoff atmosphere, the no. 4 Dolphins defeated the no. 2 Cadets, 72-64. Devon Hall, Cape Henry's 6'5" senior point guard and University of Virginia recruit, had 20 points, eight rebounds, and at least seven assists in the winning effort.

OL Smith Set To Visit UVa For First Time
When 6'6", 285-pound offensive tackle prospect Eric Smith pledged to the University of Virginia on December 20, he did so without having seen the grounds. Today, the Columbia (Decatur, GA) senior standout is en route to Charlottesville, one of 19 committed prospects Mike London and company are hosting on a huge official visit weekend.

Monroe Named Jacobs Blocking Trophy Recipient

Official Release, Virginia Athletic Media Relations

Virginia's Eugene Monroe has been awarded the 2008 Jacobs Blocking Trophy, Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford announced today.

The Jacobs Blocking Trophy has been awarded annually since 1953 to the player voted the most outstanding blocker in the ACC by a poll of the league's head coaches and defensive coordinators. The trophy is given in memory of William P. Jacobs, who served as president of Presbyterian College from 1935 to 1945.

A first-team pre-season All-ACC selection this season, Monroe, a 6-6, 315-pound senior, was an Honorable Mention All-ACC selection at tackle in 2007. A two-year starter at tackle for the Cavaliers, he was the leader of a young offensive line which has given up an ACC-low 14 sacks this year.

"The honor of being the Jacob's recipient means a lot to me," Monroe said. "It is one of the goals I set out to reach two years ago. It is a reflection of not only my work, but my coaches who helped guide me, teammates who push me everyday, and family back home who has been a supporting cast through my journey. My career has come a long way, from being a backup my first year, overcoming set backs, and being able to achieve this award."

Monroe has started 29 games in his career for the Cavaliers, and this year earned the highest blocking grade in seven of Virginia's first 11 games. He earned Honorable Mention All-ACC honors as a junior last season.

Hoos Hammer Seminoles
Image: Joe HarrisLast February, the Virginia men's basketball team felt like it let two potential wins get away when North Carolina and Florida State swiped matching three-point victories in the John Paul Jones Arena. For the second time this season, the Hoos made sure to get a little payback. Less than two weeks after topping UNC for the first time at the JPJ 61-52, the Cavaliers topped the Seminoles for the first time since 2007 with a 56-36 victory on Saturday.

FSU Primer 2013
After a disappointing 59-44 loss at Clemson, the Virginia Cavaliers (11-5, 1-2 ACC) return home on Saturday afternoon to square off against the Florida State Seminoles (10-6, 2-1 ACC). Will the Wahoos even their ACC record at 2-2, or will they again lose to a team that they haven't topped since 2007? Find out in the Florida State Primer.

Double Bonus: Clemson
Image: Joe HarrisTwo ACC road games. Two ACC road losses. After taking down North Carolina in its league opener, the first week of conference play turned sour in a hurry for the Cavaliers as they lost to Wake Forest and Clemson to round out the week. Against the Tigers, the Virginia men's basketball team produced just 44 points, the lowest offensive output since a 56-41 loss to Duke on Feb. 16, 2011. What happened to the Hoos in South Carolina? The "Double Bonus" digs into the game.
