Banks Out, Lewis In For UVa

The Virginia football coaching staff shifted again last week. Coach Mike London announced that Jeff Banks left the Cavalier program to pursue another coaching position at Texas A&M. Banks had just joined the Cavaliers on Jan. 1.

"I was very much looking forward to having Jeff as a member of our staff. We thought very highly of him. Knowing the position being presented to Jeff, I understand his desire to pursue that opportunity. We had considerable interest in this position from a number of quality coaches and now the task is to find an individual who will be able to help us reach our goals and improve as a football program," London said in a news release.

It didn't take long to find Banks' replacement to guide the running backs and special teams at UVa. On Saturday night, Virginia hired long-time college coach Larry Lewis to fill those two roles. Lewis has 32 years of collegiate coaching experience, including an eight-year stint as the head coach at Idaho State. He was one of the first college coaches to hold the title of special teams coordinator when he took on that role at Washington State in the 1990s.

"Larry Lewis has probably been coaching special teams for as long as anyone in college football and we're really fortunate to have him join our staff. On the offensive side of the ball, he has worked for some very successful and innovative coaches out west and coached two of the nation's top running backs over the past two seasons. Larry is high energy and our players are going to enjoy his style," London said in a news release.

Lewis' initial contract is for two years at an annual salary of $220,000. You can read more about Lewis' hire on VirginiaSports.com here and here (Jeff White feature).

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Sunday was an eventful day on the football recruiting front, as UVa gained a verbal commitment but lost another. Monacan (Richmond, VA) senior linebacker/fullback Connor Wingo-Reeves switched his pledge from Temple to Virginia after landing an offer from the Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon. Later in the day, previous Cavalier commitment Hipolito Corporan, a senior defensive back out of Westside High School in Houston (TX), committed to Utah.

For EDGE subscribers, a full article on Wingo-Reeves was posted Sunday evening (linked below). It includes quotes from UVa's newest commit, who details the recent developments that led to his decision.

The next Sabre Scoop article includes a recap of this weekend's developments on the recruiting trail, an update on the commitment status of Fork Union (VA) safety Malcolm Cook, and an update on Gilman (Baltimore, MD) linebacker Micah Kiser. Kiser played well in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, which took place on Jan. 4, and could contend for playing time next season.

Wingo-Reeves, Cook, Kiser, and the rest of Virginia's class of 2013 are expected to be in Charlottesville this weekend on official visits. I'll have a second Sabre Scoop article up after the weekend with the latest updates and reaction to the big weekend. I'll also provide a list of those recruits - committed and uncommitted - confirmed to be in attendance.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. LB/FB Wingo-Reeves Heading To UVa
Monacan (Richmond, VA) senior Connor Wingo-Reeves has de-committed from Temple and will instead sign with the University of Virginia. The 6'3", 220-pound linebacker/fullback prospect made the switch early Sunday afternoon, shortly after landing an offer from the Cavaliers.

UVa Recruit Perrantes On A Roll
Image: London PerrantesUniversity of Virginia-bound point guard London Perrantes has been on a tear of late. The Crespi Carmelite (Encino, CA) senior earned MVP honors at the Proviso West Tournament, a 32-team event that took place December 26 through 31 in Chicago (IL), and has kept up his stellar play in Mission League wins over Harvard-Westlake and Alemany.

More Football News

The coaching changes are not the only news coming out of the UVa football program lately.

The ACC announced the conference opponents for its teams in 2013 last week as well. The Hoos play home games against Clemson (11-2), Duke (6-7), Georgia Tech (7-7), and Virginia Tech (7-6) with road games at Maryland (4-8), Miami (7-5), North Carolina (8-4) and Pittsburgh (6-7). The specific dates for the games will be announced by the ACC in February. Some kickoff times for early-season games will be announced by the ACC in May. All other kickoff times will be announced during the season, using either a 12- or 6-day advance window selection.

Virginia also announced that senior captain Perry Jones has accepted an invitation to play in the inaugural Raycom College Football All-Star Classic on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 3 p.m. Jones is the third Cavalier senior invited to a postseason all-star game. Offensive tackle Oday Aboushi is playing in the Senior Bowl and inside linebacker Steve Greer is playing in the East-West Shrine Game.

No. 19 Virginia Takes Runner-Up Honors at Virginia Duals

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

The 19th-ranked Virginia wrestling team finished as the runner-up at the 2013 Virginia Duals Tournament Saturday evening after dropping a 21-9 dual to No. 10 Virginia Tech. The No. 4 seed in the 16-team dual-meet tournament, Virginia (9-3) earned its best finish in its 19 trips to the event. UVa upset top-seeded and ninth-ranked Central Michigan in the semifinals Saturday afternoon to advance to the finals.

No. 13 George DiCamillo, No. 15 Jon Fausey, and Zach Nye each scored wins for the Cavaliers against VT. The match was tight at each weight class, with all 10 bouts coming by decision and by five points or fewer at each weight.

"I'm proud of my kids and their fight," Virginia head coach Steve Garland said. "Obviously I'm frustrated to lose, but you have to give Virginia Tech credit too. The first time we wrestled them this season, we didn't have the heart and fight, but that was not the case this time. We were right in there throughout the match."

Basketball class wraps up ...

Last week, I wrote about the possibility of Virginia's 2010 recruiting class perhaps wrapping up shortly. Well, it did happen, only the final recruit is not named Kyle Collinsworth or Josh Henderson. Instead, Akil Mitchell, a 6-7, 210-pound forward out of Charlotte Christian (Charlotte, N.C.), rounds out Tony Bennett's 2010 class.

Although he wasn't heavily recruited by many major Division 1 programs, Mitchell is a player the Virginia staff has monitored closely throughout the spring and summer. The heavy interest began after Mitchell turned in a good showing at Virginia's Elite Camp in June. The Cavaliers would check up on Mitchell several more times before deciding to extend an official offer last Tuesday. Mitchell, who has always wanted to play in the ACC, committed a day later.

An outstanding student athlete, Mitchell carries a 4.0 GPA in the classroom. On the basketball court, he has ability on the perimeter and in the post. His coach, Shonn Brown, believes the standout senior's best basketball is yet to come. Mitchell describes himself as a late bloomer and is anxious to prove his worth in his senior season and beyond.

"You see a kid once and he's great. That's good, but you want to see him multiple times," said Brown, who coached the Curry brothers - Stephen and Seth - at Charlotte Christian. "Coach Bennett and his staff have seen him in a 4-man workout setting, an open gym setting and at their camp. They wanted to see him in all phases. They came down at various times to watch him. Coach Bennett has a good grasp of what he wants and he really took his time. He likes Akil's progression."

For more on Virginia's fifth 2010 class recruit, be sure to check out the EDGE articles written last week. And we'll continue to follow up with Akil when the November Signing Period arrives and more during his senior season.

Recent Sabre articles ...

Clemson Clips UVa
Image: Jontel EvansAn afternoon tip in South Carolina did not change much from a late-night start in North Carolina for the Virginia men's basketball team. On Wednesday night in Winston-Salem, the Cavaliers allowed a high shooting percentage in one half, committed too many turnovers, and missed tons of shots as Wake Forest won 55-52. On Saturday afternoon in the other Carolina, the outcome followed the same unfortunate formula as Clemson took down the Hoos, 59-44.

Double Bonus: Wake Forest
Image: Darion AtkinsAfter taking down North Carolina at home, the Virginia men's basketball team fell to 1-1 in ACC play with a 55-52 road loss at Wake Forest on Wednesday night. The Cavaliers fell behind in the first half and couldn't overcome that deficit despite a late rally. What happened? The "Double Bonus" takes a closer look at some of the details from the Demon Deacon debacle.

Good, Bad, And Ugly Of UVa's ACC Start
Image: Mike TobeyThe Virginia men's basketball team has played two ACC games thus far: an encouraging 61-52 win against North Carolina at home, and a disappointing 55-52 loss to Wake Forest on the road. Much like the out of conference schedule, the young Cavalier squad played up to its level of competition in one game and then played down to its level of completion in the next. In this article, I'll break down what I thought were the good, bad, and ugly details of the two contests.

Deacons Dispatch Hoos
This season's Virginia men's basketball team has played few games outside of the John Paul Jones Arena. So far, other than an impressive victory at Wisconsin, travel has not been kind to the Wahoos. On Wednesday night, the Cavaliers played just their fourth game away from home and they lost for the third time in those trips as Wake Forest grabbed a 55-52 ACC win.

Wake Forest Primer 2013
After pulling away late to beat UNC in their ACC opener, the Virginia Cavaliers (11-3, 1-0 ACC) hit the road for a Wednesday night tilt against Wake Forest. Will the Wahoos win their first game in Winston-Salem since 2000, or will the Demon Deacons (7-6, 0-1 ACC) continue to make the Joel Coliseum a house of horrors for UVa? Find out in the Wake Forest Primer.

Double Bonus: UNC
Image: Evan NolteThe Virginia men's basketball team opened ACC play with a 61-52 victory against North Carolina on Sunday. Six different Cavaliers scored at least 6 points in the win, while the team's defense held UNC to just 37.3% shooting on the night. There were some other key details in the win, however, and Sabre Editor Kris Wright takes a closer look in a new EDGE feature called the "Double Bonus."
