       Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

UVa has its new coaching staff in place. Late last week and this week, there is no doubt that the staff is busy introducing the new coaches to its class of 2013 recruits, and this week I plan to catch up with as many recruits as possible for their initial reaction to the new staff.

The appointment of Jon Tenuta will be the primary focus. Of those UVa commitments known to be exploring other options, all are projected to play on the defensive side of the ball. Fork Union (VA) safety Malcolm Cook has scheduled official visits to Virginia Tech and Wake Forest in addition to the trip he'll be taking to UVa the weekend of Jan. 18. Varina (VA) corner Tim Harris is scheduled to visit UNC after his visit to UVa, which also will take place the weekend of Jan. 18-20. Fork Union (VA) defensive tackle Tyrell Chavis, a postgraduate who signed with the Hoos in 2012 before failing to qualify, is set to visit UVa and Virginia Tech this month.

Potomac (Dumfries, VA) defensive tackle Donta Wilkins proclaimed following the Chesapeake Bowl on Dec. 29 that he was firm in his commitment to Virginia. We'll check in with him as well, though, for his reaction to the coaching news.

The recruit most on the proverbial fence right now is Westside (Houston, TX) cornerback Hipolito Corporan. Corporan is scheduled to take an official to Utah this coming weekend. The 6'2", 185-pound senior acknowledged he could well switch from the Hoos to the Utes if the visit goes well. His recruitment will be worth watching this week.

    Also this week....

    • A check-in on UVa men's basketball recruits, London Perrantes and Devon Hall.
    • The release of TheSabre.com's Postseason Top 40, a ranking of the top in-state football players in the class of 2013. I'll also look ahead to the state's class of 2014 as well.
    • An article on Virginia wide receiver recruit Keeon Johnson. The 6'3", 200-pound standout, a product of A.L. Brown High School (Kannapolis, N.C.), is excited about his future at the University of Virginia.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Peach State TE Names Favorite
Lambert (Suwanee, GA) tight end Chris Laye, a junior, does not plan on waiting too long to make his college choice. The 6'5", 240-pound prospect has a timetable in mind, and right now he has a clear favorite as well.

    Sabre Scoop: Chesapeake Bowl Notes
The 2012 Chesapeake Bowl took place this past Saturday, and the North (players from DE, NJ, and PA) came away with an impressive 38-13 win over the South (players from DC, MD, and VA). Future Wahoos Kirk Garner, Taquan Mizzell, and Donta Wilkins suited up for the South squad, while offensive line target Jaryd Jones-Smith played for the North. In this latest Sabre Scoop, get the latest recruiting updates on Wilkins and Jones-Smith and more from this past weekend's event.

    UNC's Roy Williams On UVa

The Virginia men's basketball team knocked off UNC, 61-52, in its ACC opener on Sunday. Here's what North Carolina coach Roy Williams had to say after the game:

"I have to congratulate Tony [Bennett]. Obviously, I thought his second half was really good. They were better than we were offensively. They were better than we were defensively. They were more alert, more aggressive. ...

"We had a little bit of a run the first couple of minutes of the second half. We had great movement at that time. We had four different guys at least score. After that, we didn't get very good movement. We didn't set the screens the way we wanted to set them, didn't use them the way we wanted to use them. We missed some good shots. At the same time, our defense was breaking down on the other end. ...

"Give Virginia credit. They shot 52 percent the second half. We're trying to focus and see if we can do a good job on Joe [Harris]. Joe was really good. I thought Jontel [Evans] coming in was big for them, too. Six assists, three turnovers - I think he had two or three of those turnovers in the first half. I thought the second half that Jontel was really big for them. We couldn't stop him from getting to the basket. ...

"We didn't do the things that we wanted to do. Give Virginia credit. They did the things that they wanted to do, and they dominated both ends of the court in the second half."

    Issue No. 3 - Sept. 20, 2001

    Football Recruiting

As mentioned in an earlier breaking news story, the Cavalier football program received a commitment from offensive lineman Brad Butler last Thursday. The news was kept secret until a Lynchburg television station reported the commitment on Monday. Butler is a senior at E.C. Glass H.S. in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Butler wasn't on most colleges' radar screen before the announcement, but is said to have a huge upside. Schools like Maryland, Duke, Wake Forest and East Carolina were showing interest, but only the Cavaliers were quick to offer a scholarship. Butler said Virginia was always at the top of his list, so when the Cavaliers made their offer, he accepted.

The upside to Butler is his height and the fact that he has very little body fat. At 265 pounds, Butler believes that he could easily play at 330 pounds. He is quick off the line and athletic, but will need to improve his strength.

His commitment brings the list to eight total for the 2002 class. Because four of Virginia's starting offensive linemen graduate this spring, his commitment helps to fill a void in the Cavaliers' program.

    UVa Secures Win Over UNC
Image: Joe HarrisThe opening moments of the second half at the John Paul Jones Arena didn't live up to the halftime discussion for the Virginia men's basketball team. So UVa coach Tony Bennett took a reminder timeout to dig into his players in their ACC opener against North Carolina. The obviously more composed Hoos ripped off a 17-7 run after that break and they did not have another turnover the rest of the way en route to a 61-52 victory.

    UNC Primer 2013
After an impressive 74-39 victory over Wofford, the Virginia Cavaliers (10-3) open the ACC slate with a Sunday night home tilt against rival North Carolina. Will the Wahoos start off ACC play with a win or fall victim to the hated Heels? Find out in the UNC Primer.

Is UVa's Pack-Line Ready For ACC Play?
Image: Coach Tony BennettThe Virginia men's basketball team wrapped up non-conference play with a 74-39 win against Wofford, marking the third time in five games that the opponent failed to reach 40 points. Entering ACC play, UVa ranks in the top 25 nationally in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense while placing in the top 50 in 3-point field goal percentage defense. Can that effort hold up against the rigorous 18-game league schedule?
