This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Fork Union (VA) safety Malcolm Cook, Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) 5-star running back Taquan Mizzell, and others will be featured in the latest Sabre Scoop, which will be out early this week.

I'll also have a full article out on Mizzell, who is currently the most highly rated prospect in UVa's class of 2013. The 5'10", 185-pound running back, nicknamed "Smoke," totaled 31 touchdowns in his senior season at Bayside. He has high goals for his freshman year at UVa.

"I want to be a freshman All-American," said Mizzell, who attended UVa's home game against UNC last Thursday.

Mizzell is one of two Virginia-bound recruits on the 2012 All-Beach District First Team. Joining Mizzell, who was named to the first team at running back and kick return, is Ocean Lakes quarterback Corwin "Turtle" Cutler. The 6'3", 190-pound Cutler beat out Virginia Tech-bound signal caller Bucky Hodges for first-team honors.

Turtle had an outstanding senior season come to an end in the regional quarterfinals against Granby when he suffered a torn ACL.

Ocean Lakes advanced to the Eastern Region Division 6 finals against Oscar Smith, which features another UVa recruit in wide receiver Zack Jones. A number of Cavalier recruits enjoyed postseason success last week, so be sure to check out the Good Ol Blog for the latest Week In Review (linked below).

On the basketball front, point guards Devon Hall and London Perrantes signed with the Hoos last week as expected. TheSabre.com will have more analysis on UVa's recruits and how the rest of the ACC did in this Early Signing Period.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre EDGE recruiting updates since the last SabreMail ...

Cook Flourishing At FUMA
Image: Malcolm CookMalcolm Cook enjoyed a breakout season in his first (and last) year at Fork Union Military Academy (VA). The Richmond (VA) native, a safety, has racked up at least 14 interceptions for a 10-2 Blue Devils squad that will take on Liberty Christian Academy in the Virginia Independent Schools Division 1 state championship this Friday night.

Corporan Talks Visit, Commitment Status
Westside (Houston, TX) cornerback Hipolito Corporan verbally committed to the University of Virginia back in the spring, despite the fact that he had never been to Charlottesville before. Plans to visit the grounds this past summer fell through, but the 6'2", 190-pound senior did make an official visit to UVa this past weekend.

UVa-VT At Noon On ESPNU

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced that Virginia's road football game at Virginia Tech this Saturday, Nov. 24, will kick off at noon. The game will be broadcast by the ESPNU. This is the final game of the 2012 season for the Cavaliers.

Soccer Teams Ousted

From UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Releases

The second-ranked Virginia women's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Sunday with a 3-1 loss to No. 15 Duke in a NCAA Round of 16 match at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers conclude their season with an 18-5-1 record, matching the school record for wins in a year.

"Congratulations to Duke, it was a tough game but the better team won today," said UVa coach Steve Swanson. "We have a lot of respect for their team and their coaching staff and they are a real class organization. We are obviously disappointed with the loss, but if we had to go out at this point, at least it was to an ACC team and a team we respect an awful lot."

Virginia's goal came from Caroline Miller, who extended her single-season school records to 20 goals and 47 points. It also extended her school record goal-scoring streak to eight consecutive games.

The Virginia men's soccer team, meanwhile, saw its season come to a close with a 3-1 defeat to 13th-seeded New Mexico Sunday evening in a second-round NCAA tournament match at the UNM Sports Complex. Virginia, which wraps its season with a 10-7-4 mark, had its seven-match unbeaten streak snapped.

"Obviously it's always tough to end a season," UVa coach George Gelnovatch said. "I'm really proud of them. It's a young group that handled itself very well in a really tough environment. This is going to be a very good team in the future and playing this team in this environment is going to do us a lot of good."

The Cavaliers' goal came from Matt Brown, his first career score.

   SabreMail History

Issue No. 529 - January 9, 2012

This Week In Recruiting

Norfolk Christian (Norfolk, VA) linebacker Kwontie Moore and Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA) defensive end Eli Harold were participants in the 2012 U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 7. For Moore, rated the no. 1 inside linebacker in the country by Rivals.com, the all-star event was an opportunity to silence any critics.

"I'd rate my performance well," Moore said. "I feel like I did pretty good. I went there trying to prove something. I wanted to prove I am the number one inside linebacker in the country. I feel like I played well. Some people have been second-guessing me, but I feel like I did well."

Sabre articles and blog posts since the last SabreMail

The Sunday Sampler 2012 - UNC
Image: Mike RoccoVirginia's loss to North Carolina on Thursday night bumped the Hoos out of bowl contention and left the team with one final game - the rivalry showdown with Virginia Tech. It also exposed a defensive area that, simply put, needs to be addressed beginning as soon as spring practice starts. Receiver screens. The Sunday Sampler looks at that and much, much more.

More From Teven Jones ...
Redshirt freshman Teven Jones made his Virginia debut during the Cavaliers’ 83-43 win against Seattle on Saturday at the John Paul Jones Arena. The Hoos will need Jones to provide some point guard minutes while senior captain Jontel Evans continues to recover from offseason surgery (Evans did not play Saturday after getting a few brief minutes earlier this week against Delaware). Here are some extra quotes from Jones after the game.

Virginia Trounces Seattle
Image: Teven JonesAfter a helter-skelter barnburner on the West Coast in last season's meeting with Seattle, many Virginia fans worried that a score in the 70's or higher could be bad news for the Hoos on Saturday. It wasn't. It did prove to be very bad news for the visiting Redhawks, however, as the Cavaliers lit up the scoreboard en route to a dominant 83-43 victory. That represents the largest margin of victory in the Tony Bennett era at UVa.

Seattle Poses Tough Match-up
The Virginia men’s basketball team welcomes Seattle to the John Paul Jones Arena on Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest that is available to watch on ESPN3. This is the third meeting in three years with the Redhawks. If the first two contests are any indication, this will be a tough match-up for the Hoos.

Tar Heels Take Out Hoos
Image: Phillip SimsThe Virginia football team's post-bye week magic ran out as the Cavaliers came up short - literally - against North Carolina on Thursday night. The primetime showdown remained a closely contested affair until UVa failed to score on fourth down from the one-yard line late in the third quarter and things spiraled out of control for the hosts the rest of the way as the Tar Heels rolled to a 37-13 victory.

Greg's Grades And Trends: Miami, UNC
Image: Mike RoccoThe Virginia Cavaliers dominated the final 11:38 of the game and for the fourth time in his career quarterback Michael Rocco led the Cavaliers on a game-tying or game-winning drive in UVa's 41-40 victory over the University of Miami. The win was the fourth of the season and kept the Hoos' slim postseason hopes alive.

Game Preview 2012: UNC
The theme of the week: Restart a Charlottesville streak. Virginia dominated North Carolina in Charlottesville from 1981-2008, winning every meeting at Scott Stadium. The Tar Heels finally broke their curse in 2010, however, with a 44-10 victory. The Cavaliers and older alums would love nothing more than to restart a streak of Charlottesville losing for the Heels this season.

Delaware Drops Virginia
Image: Darion AtkinsThe Virginia men's basketball team wanted to take a bite out of the Big Apple in the NIT Season Tip-Off event, but those dreams bit the dust Monday night with a lackluster showing against Delaware. The Blue Hens locked up the Hoos' offense to win 59-53 and advance to Madison Square Garden in New York for the NIT Semifinals.

Streaking Hoos Prep For UNC
Image: Zack SwansonVirginia is riding a two-game win streak heading into the Thursday night, nationally televised ESPN match-up against North Carolina. To start the win streak, the Cavaliers destroyed NC State on the road, 33-6. Virginia then took Miami in a shootout, 41-40, that wasn't decided until just 6 seconds remained. But this week offers a completely different challenge because the Cavaliers have a short week to prepare due to the Thursday night schedule.

Delaware Primer 2012
After holding Fairfield to 15 points in the second half of a 54-45 victory Monday night, the Virginia Cavaliers (1-1) return to the court Tuesday night to face the Delaware Blue Hens (1-1) with a trip to Madison Square Garden on the line. Will the Wahoos finish this game in an Empire State of Mind, or will they lose their second game of the season to a CAA opponent? Find out in the Delaware Primer.

UVa Finishes Off Fairfield
Image: Joe HarrisIn many ways, the system employed by the Virginia men's basketball team is a test of wills. Mainly, will you grind it out against the Pack-Line defense for extended periods of time? Fairfield got a heavy dose of the classic Tony Bennett style defense Monday night in the NIT Season Tip-Off Tournament as the Hoos shut down the Stags in the final 8 minutes to pull away to the 54-45 victory.

JHoo's Things I Learned 2012: Miami
Image: Mike RoccoThat. Just. Happened. Virginia pulled out a heart-stopping last-second win against Miami on Saturday, 41-40, giving the Hoos back-to-back wins in November. The drama concluded with a Michael Rocco to Jake McGee touchdown pass that caused Scott Stadium to erupt. Breaking it down will be a true pleasure.

Fairfield Primer 2012
After a tough, season-opening loss to George Mason, 63-59, at the Patriot Center, the Virginia Cavaliers return to Charlottesville to square off against the Fairfield Stags of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) in the opening round of the Preseason NIT. Can the Cavs turn things around with a win, or will they fall to 0-2 on the season? Find out in the Fairfield Primer.
