UVa Men's XC Wins Region

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

The Virginia men’s cross country team won its first NCAA Southeast Regional Championship on Friday at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte, N.C. With the win, the men will compete at the NCAA Championships this Saturday in Louisville, Ky.

The men had five finishers in the top 19 to earn 64 points and out-pace Eastern Kentucky, who placed second with 75 points. ACC Rivals NC State (102), Virginia Tech (150) and Duke (201) rounded out the top five.

"I'm proud of this team," head men's cross country coach Pete Watson said. "This was a great team effort from all of our guys. We executed the game plan to perfection. I'm excited for these guys winning UVa's first men's regional title."

On the women’s side, the Cavaliers placed eighth with 251 points. Duke won the team title with 81 points. Graduate student Catherine White earned an NCAA individual berth and All-Southeast Region honors as a result of her fourth-place finish (20:22.64). It will be White's fourth national cross country appearance and first since 2009, when she finished fourth overall for UVa.

Fellow graduate student Zach Gates finished fourth to lead the men in 29:43.08, while redshirt freshman Kyle King crossed the line 10th in 30:02.13.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Basketball Recruiting

UVa missed out on all three of its top class of 2013 low post targets this fall recruiting period. Rock School (Gainesville, FL) center Joel Embiid eliminated the Hoos and is now only considering Florida, Kansas, and Texas. Power forwards Austin Nichols and Schuyler Rimmer committed elsewhere, with Nichols choosing Memphis and Rimmer selecting Stanford.

Barring a surprise, it appears UVa will ink only two players in the Early Signing Period, which begins on Wednesday and lasts one week. Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) point guard Devon Hall and Crespi (Encino, CA) point guard London Perrantes are both expected to sign early, and both are likely to sign this week.

Football Recruiting

Several class of 2013 commitments, including defensive tackle Donta Wilkins and defensive backs Malcolm Cook, Hipolito Corporan, and Tim Harris, and one top class of 2014 target were on hand to watch Virginia knock off Miami this past Saturday. This week, I plan to have reaction from these prospects on what was an intense and exciting game in Scott Stadium.

Corporan was in Charlottesville on an official visit. I'll have a full update on the Houston (TX) defensive back's experience this week.

The top junior target in attendance was Delaware linebacker Troy Reeder, who earned an offer from the Cavaliers this past summer. Reeder is a 6'2", 226-pound prospect that has seen action at quarterback and linebacker for his high school team. He had multiple college offers (all verbal) heading into this fall.

Also, I'll have an update up on the aforementioned Cook, who is having an outstanding season for Fork Union Military Academy (VA). Cook, a safety prospect, and the rest of the Blue Devils will meet Liberty Christian Academy this Friday night in the VIS, Division 1 state championship game.

Jenkins Wins ITA Title

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia senior Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) won his first career major collegiate singles title on Sunday by capturing the ITA Indoor ntercollegiate Championship at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center. He becomes the third Cavalier to win the prestigious event, joining Somdev Devvarman (2007) and Mitchell Frank (2011).

Jenkins, the No. 6 seed, downed Sebastian Fanselow of Pepperdine 6-2, 6-1, in the championship match.

With the victory, the Cavaliers swept the two major ITA singles championships this year, as junior Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) won the ITA All-American Championship last month. Virginia becomes the second school in history to win both titles in the same year with different players, joining Stanford who had Ryan Wolters win the All-American and Jeff Salzenstein win the Indoor Intercollegiate during the 1995-96 season.

New arena plans approved by BOV

New Arena Plan

The University of Virginia Board of Visitors approved the architectural plans this week for a new area to be built on the parking lot across the street from University Hall, between Copeley Hill and Emmet Street.

Plans are for a $128 million, 15,076-seat arena to be built by May 2006. The arena will contain many of the architectural designs that appear at the newly renovated Scott Stadium, like the pergola for example. The arena will contain 20 luxury suites that may lease for around $40,000 to $50,000 per year. The architect of this project, Bob Moje of VMDO, is the same architect of the Scott Stadium renovation project.

The Sunday Sampler 2012 - Miami
Image: Dominique TerrellIn many ways Virginia's 41-40 victory over Miami on Saturday was a lesson in resilience. The Cavaliers faced several moments, including a 10-point fourth quarter deficit and a late safety during an attempted rally, that could have caused them to fold. They didn't. Then there were many of the individual stories that made winning possible.

Photo Gallery: UVa 41, Miami 40
Image: Eli HaroldThe Virginia football team needed a fourth-quarter rally to take down Miami 41-40 on Saturday, but with the win the Hoos have won two straight games. Look back at the victory against the Hurricanes with photos of Michael Rocco, Dominique Terrell, Eli Harold, and more in this gallery! Photo galleries are free on TheSabre.com!

Hoos Stun Hurricanes
Image: Jake McGeeNine weeks ago at Scott Stadium, Michael Rocco led Virginia on a last-gasp drive to defeat Penn State with a touchdown pass to Jake McGee. 63 days later, No. 83 came through again for Rocco. This Saturday the duo connected on a touchdown play with 6 seconds remaining to stun Miami 41-40. With the victory, UVa has won two straight games for the first time since September.

George Mason Edges UVa
Friday's men's basketball meeting between George Mason and Virginia settled into a see-saw season-opening battle with 10 ties and 16 lead changes, but the Patriots came through with some clutch shooting in the final 1:30 to win 63-59. It marked Mason's first ever victory in eight tries against UVa, which entered the game on a 14-game winning streak in season openers.

2012 Watch List: Miami
Image: Jake McGeeThe Virginia football team looks to win two straight games for the first time since September when Miami comes to town Saturday. The Hoos opened the season with back-to-back wins against Richmond and Penn State before a six-game losing streak hit the books. The Cavaliers bounced back after the bye week with a convincing victory against NC State last weekend and they hope to add another one this time around. The Watch List takes a look at a few wrinkles that could appear in the UVa-Miami matchup.

Greg's Grades And Trends: NC State, Miami
Image: Chris BrathwaiteIn my grade and trend report last this week I said "I believe Virginia is looking at the losing end of another game with a 31-17 loss." That's why they play the game. In winning in Raleigh for the first time since 1999, Virginia dominated with the run, was efficient with its passing game and finally found a way to force more turnovers than it gave away. Let's look at the grades and prepare for the matchup with Miami.

George Mason Primer 2012
Image: Tony BennettA season after a convincing 68-48 victory over George Mason in the friendly confines of the John Paul Jones Arena, the Virginia Cavaliers travel up U.S. 29 to open the 2012-2013 season against Paul Hewitt's squad at the Patriot Center. Will the Hoos notch another victory against their northern Virginian neighbors, or will Hewitt record his first win against Tony Bennett? Find out in the George Mason Primer.

Tailgating With Chefhoo 2012: Miami
You're coming off the team's most impressive victory of the year. Your tailgates have been getting a little stale and the team's been struggling at home. You just feel the need for a change. No more fried chicken, no more ham biscuits. You want to try something new and different. This is Not Your Ordinary Taco. Plus, there's a Mexican Braised Pork recipe too.

Game Preview 2012: Miami
Image: Steve GreerBuild on that. The goal this week simply has to be "build on that NC State win." After all, there were some positive signs against the Wolfpack. With the Coastal Division leaders coming to town, the Hoos simply want to avoid a step backward against Miami. Let's take a close look at the match-up against the Hurricanes.

JHoo's Things I Learned 2012: NC State
Whew, we really needed a win, didn't we? Yes, we did. It always is a little nicer to break down a win compared to a loss, something that I quickly remembered the last couple of days as I dug into the NCSU win. Here are a few Things I learned from the Cavaliers' 33-6 victory against NC State.

Hoos Focus On Miami After Win
Image: Miles GoochVirginia is riding a one-game win streak into its game with Miami ... wait, UVa won an ACC game ... on the road ... against a formidable opponent with a high level quarterback? Yes, the Hoos did. And they did so in dramatic fashion by completely dominating NC State in a 33-6 rout in front of a red sea of more than 54,000 Wolfpack fans. But how can this be? Cavalier coach Mike London discussed his team's turn-around last week and the match-up with Miami at his weekly press conference Monday.
