UVa Women's Soccer Wins ACC Title

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

The No. 8 Virginia women's soccer team captured the 2012 ACC Championship with a 4-0 win over No. 7 Maryland in Sunday's final at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The Cavaliers won their second conference championship in their history, matching the accomplishment of the 2004 team.

Sophomore midfielder Morgan Brian and Caroline Miller each had a goal and an assist in Sunday's final, while Gloria Douglas and Makenzy Doniak also scored for the Cavaliers. It was Virginia's fifth consecutive win over a ranked opponent, outscoring its foes 19-3 in those games.

"I'm so happy for his team," said head coach Steve Swanson. "We've improved steadily as the year has gone by and we've become a better and better team. Not only am I happy about the result, that we can call ourselves ACC Champions, but we played some great soccer this weekend as well."

Brian, who entered the ACC Tournament with no goals and three assists during the regular season, had three goals and three assists during the Cavaliers' championship run to earn ACC Tournament MVP honors.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Basketball Recruiting

The Early Signing Period for Division 1 men's basketball begins on Nov. 14 and lasts through Nov. 21. This week, the Virginia basketball staff may learn whether or not they'll add a third recruit to the fold.

So far, UVa has gained commitments from Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) point guard Devon Hall and Crespi (Encino, CA) point guard London Perrantes. Hall is rated on the 4-star level by Rivals.com and Scout.com, and Perrantes is rated a 4-star by ESPN.com and Scout.com. As has been reported here over the past month, the Cavaliers are in the market for a big man to go along with the two backcourt recruits. The candidates?

Rock School (Gainesville, FL) center Joel Embiid. The 7'0" was at Marquette on an official visit this past weekend. He also made official trips to Texas, Kansas, UVa and Florida. Some reports indicate the promising talent could at least narrow his list further this week, and right now he is expected to sign in early.

Briarcrest Christian (Eads, TN) power forward Austin Nichols. Multiple reports say the 6'9" senior has selected Memphis.

Boone (Orlando, FL) 3-star power forward Schuyler Rimmer. Rimmer made an official visit to Vanderbilt this past weekend. Sunday, he tweeted the following: "About to leave Nashville. Gotta do some serious thinking about my future when I get home. Decision coming within the next week." In addition to Vandy, Rimmer is also considering Southern Cal, Stanford, and UVa. The 6'9", 235-pound prospect made official visits to all four finalists.

I hope to have updates this week, and if there is any breaking news we'll be sure to report it.

Also this week ...

I'll have an update on Boston College High (Boston, MA) senior offensive lineman Jack McDonald, one of 18 high school seniors that have verbally committed to the Virginia program. McDonald discusses his senior season and looks ahead to his future at UVa.

Check out the Good Ol Blog for the latest "Week In Review" feature (linked below). Linebacker LaChaston Smith turned in a record-setting performance for South Iredell (Statesville, N.C.) last week, helping his team to a first round playoff victory. Rimmer Comes Away Impressed By UVa
The University of Virginia was the latest official visit destination for Boone (Orlando, FL) power forward Schuyler Rimmer, who was in Charlottesville last Thursday through Saturday. The 6'9", 230-pound senior took some time to reflect on the experience and discuss what lies ahead recruiting-wise in the coming days and weeks.

A Look At Cape Henry Collegiate
Image: Devon HallExpectations are high for the Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) varsity boys basketball team, which went undefeated and captured the VIS Division II state championship in 2011/2012. UVa-bound senior point guard Devon Hall headlines the list of returning starters for the Dolphins, but he isn't the only college prospect on the roster.

Brathwaite, Canady Earn ACC Honors

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Following Virginia's 33-6 road victory at NC State, UVa's sophomore defensive tackle Chris Brathwaite was named the ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week and freshman cornerback Maurice Canady was named the ACC Co-Defensive Back of the Week, as announced by the league office.

Brathwaite helped the Cavalier defense hold NC State to a season low 216 yards of offense (19 rushing yards) in Virginia's 33-6 victory in Raleigh. The Wolfpack entered the game averaging 429.2 yards per game. Brathwaite had five tackles, two sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss while also forcing a fumble. The six points and 19 rushing yards were season lows for NC State.

Canady shares the honor with Wake Forest's Kevin Johnson. The true freshman started his first game and led Virginia's defense with seven tackles and had an interception with a return of 39 yards in the triumph. He helped limit the Wolfpack passing game to just 197 yards, a season low.

The Sunday Sampler 2012 - NC State
"Doubt is a thief that often makes us fear to tread where we might have won," Shakespeare wrote. Two conflicting forces - confidence and doubt - play huge roles in sports. And at no time is there greater doubt for a team than during a losing streak. So I believe one of the hardest things in coaching is to keep a team focused, working, and believing during a string of losses. The challenge grows with every setback. That was the task facing Mike London and the Virginia football program.

Hoos Hammer Wolfpack
Image: Coach Mike LondonPenalties, turnovers, inconsistent offensive line play, and dropped passes. All of the issues that have plagued the Virginia football team this season showed up again in Saturday's game, but this time the majority of the miscues belonged to the opponent as NC State committed 5 turnovers and struggled throughout the day. As a result, the Cavaliers led wire to wire in a 33-6 demolition of the Wolfpack.

2012 Watch List: NC State
The Virginia football team resumes play this week with a trip to Raleigh, a location where UVa is 8-16 all-time against NC State. Can the Hoos find a way to win against the Wolfpack and snap a six-game losing streak? The weekly Watch List article takes a look at some in-game details that could impact the outcome from both sides of the ball.

Ask The Experts #14: Tyrone Lewis
Image: Tyrone LewisTyrone Lewis played in two different schemes for two different coordinators at Virginia, manning a defensive back position in both a 5-2 and 4-3 defense. The scheme didn't matter much, though. Lewis and his fellow teammates in the secondary were a fierce group of competitors that proved to be a force to be reckoned with while wearing the orange and blue. Lewis answered some questions about playing safety for TheSabre.com's "Ask the Experts" series.

Game Preview 2012: NC State
Image: Oday Aboushi The Virginia football team is looking for a bye week boost. And there's a lot at stake for the Cavaliers as they prepare for NC State after an open date on the calendar. UVa has lost six straight games to stand at 2-6 on the season and another loss mathematically eliminates the team from postseason play. Further, this group is trying to avoid becoming the first Cavalier team since 1981 to lose seven straight games. UVa coach Mike London said that the Wahoos "desperately" want to win a game and that they used the bye week to focus on improving things that can help get them back in the win column.

Hoos Prep For NCSU
Image: Phillip SimsThe Virginia football team had its bye last week, a time to reflect on many things: improvement, preparation and discipline. The latter was addressed with coach Mike London's opening statement at Monday's weekly press conference. "Three players will be suspended for this game - Jeremiah Mathis, Henry Coley, and LoVante Battle - for violation of team rules," London said. Each player has been suspended indefinitely. Read about that and more in this weekly notes article.

Greg's Grades And Trends: Wake, NC State
Image: Luke BowankoA superb effort by the Virginia defense was not enough to overcome bad specials teams play, turnovers, penalties, dropped passes, and stalled drives. Yep, we've seen this movie before. For grading purposes, I held Virginia's offense and special teams responsible for 13 of Wake's 16 points. Sorry defense. Let's break down the grades against the Deacons, compare this season's grades to last season, and look at some trends that could be a factor against NC State.
