St. Maarten Cafe is the OFFICIAL 2012 football season home in Charlottesville of TheSabre.com and its fans. So when UVa takes on NC State in Raleigh this weekend at 12:30 p.m., Maartens is the place to watch the game. Located on The Corner just off UVa's Grounds at 1400 Wertland Street, the restaurant reopened under new ownership - two long-time employees and several Virginia alums! - and features four HD televisions with "a view from every seat". Plus, there's a newly added patio for outdoor dining.

The long-time Corner restaurant features specials throughout the week and on game day! For example, the Happy Hour Food Specials run Monday through Thursday from 4-7 p.m.: $3 Half Island Nachos, $7 Buffalo Shrimp, $2 Chips & Salsa, and $3 Cheese Quesadilla. This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Boone (Orlando, FL) senior power forward Schuyler Rimmer was on Grounds at the University of Virginia last Thursday through Saturday. Upon completion of his official visit, the 6'9" senior tweeted the following:

"Had a great visit at #UVA. Charlottesville is a beautiful town."

Initial attempts to reach Rimmer for comment have been unsuccessful, but I expect to have comments from him at some point this week. At this point, it appears an official visit to Vanderbilt remains set for this weekend, the first in November. Rimmer, who took earlier trips to Southern Cal and Stanford, has no other official visits scheduled.

In addition to catching up with Rimmer, I will continue to monitor the recruitments of two other Virginia low post targets as well. Rock School (Gainesville, FL) center Joel Embiid took an official to the University of Florida this past weekend and is expected to check out Marquette this weekend. The 7'0" senior already has visited Texas, Kansas, and Virginia. His coach, Justin Harden, discussed Embiid's visit to Virginia and more in last week's EDGE update (see the link below).

Briarcrest Christian (Eads, TN) senior power forward Austin Nichols traveled to Auburn this past weekend, and he has now taken all five of his allotted official visits. The 6'9" Nichols also traveled officially to Duke, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Virginia. He is also considering Memphis. Recent reports indicate he could be ready to make his decision in early November.

Also this week...

  • As always, the "Week In Review" is now up on the Good Ol Blog (see link below). It's approaching playoff time on the high school scene, and many of Virginia's 2013 class recruits appear headed for postseason action. Last week, touted running back Taquan "Smoke" Mizzell had a huge fourth quarter in Bayside's (Virginia Beach, VA) comeback win over Cox.
  • I'll have the preview of defending VIS Division II boys basketball state champion Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) up this week. UVa-bound point guard Devon Hall, featured in an EDGE update last week (see link below), leads the team into what promises to be a tough 2012/2013 schedule.
  • I plan to check in with a few of Virginia's top remaining target on the football recruiting front. Olympia (Orlando, FL) senior offensive tackle Shawn Curtis and Tabor Academy (Marion, MA) defensive tackle Tevin Montgomery are on the call list, though the latter player has been tough to get a hold of in recent months. UVa, which has 18 commitments, has offered both players.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. To sign up for an EDGE subscription, please check out the Sabre EDGE Sign Up and Information Page. If you're already on board as an EDGE subscriber, click the links below to catch up on recruiting.

Devon Hall Looks Back On UVa Official Visit
Image: Devon HallCape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) senior point guard recruit Devon Hall made an official visit to the University of Virginia this past weekend. Wright, Ryan To Be Honored

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia's all-time leading scorer, Monica Wright, will have her number retired during a halftime ceremony of the Cavaliers' Nov. 9 season opening game against James Madison at John Paul Jones Arena. During the same ceremony, Hall of Fame coach Debbie Ryan will be honored with a new banner at John Paul Jones Arena to recognize her accomplishments.

Virginia's season opener against JMU on Friday, Nov. 9 will tip-off at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.

Wright's No. 22 will be the fifth women's basketball number retired by the program, joining Donna Holt (11), Dawn Staley (24), Cathy Grimes (25) and Wendy Palmer (31).

"Monica Wright made a lasting impact on the Virginia women's basketball program and she's very deserving of this honor," said Virginia's Director of Athletics Craig Littlepage. "She is joining some very impressive company when her number is retired alongside those other great former Cavaliers."

"It's fitting that we recognize Debbie Ryan'soutstanding career at UVa on the same night that she is able to celebrate the accomplishments of one of the many great student-athletes she coached during her Hall of Fame career. Debbie is a pioneer for women's basketball, not just at Virginia, but nationally."

Wright is the first Virginia player to have both her jersey and number retired. Her jersey was retired in ceremonies following her final regular season home game in 2010. The numbers of players honored with jersey retirement remain active, but Wright's No. 22 will now be retired.

Wright finished her career at Virginia by averaging 23.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game en route to first team All-America honors from the Associated Press, WBCA and U.S. Basketball Writers Association. She was selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, ACC Defensive Player of the Year and WBCA National Defensive Player of the Year. Wright is UVa's all-time leading scorer with 2,540 points - a total that ranks third in ACC history.

   SabreMail History

Issue No. 112 - Nov. 7, 2003

Where oh where did the defense go? That's what Wahoo fans have been wondering since the Cavaliers lost a 51-37 slugfest in Raleigh, North Carolina last Saturday. The Hoos and Wolfpack traded blows on almost every possession throughout the game and were knotted at 37 apiece with a little over two minutes to play. But Virginia was unable to move the ball on their last possession and had to punt the ball back to State. With time winding down in regulation, and N.C. State methodically moving the ball down the field, the Hoos could only hope to keep the Pack out of field goal range and force overtime. N.C. State's T.A. McLendon then ruined any hope of a Wahoo victory when he sprinted 38 yards for the deciding score with just 22 seconds remaining in the contest. The Wolkpack would add another touchdown with 8 seconds remaining off a 26-yard interception return.

While the defense did not play well, the offense gave Wahoo fans something to cheer about. Quarterback Matt Schaub threw for 393 yards on 41 of 55 and four touchdowns. His only interception was when UVa was in desperation mode with just under 20 seconds remaining in the contest. The 393 yards sets a new UVa school record for most yards passed in a single game, surpassing Aaron Brooks' 390 passing yards against Virginia Tech in 1997.

Sabre articles and blog posts since the last SabreMail

Small Town Shooters May Boost Hoos
Image: Joe HarrisThe Virginia men's basketball team lost quite a bit of experience and production from the 2012 NCAA Tournament team. Gone are Mike Scott, Sammy Zeglinski, and Assane Sene. Plus, for the start of the season at least, Jontel Evans will be coming back from fall surgery. Yes, those four players started many of the game last season. The Cavaliers hope a pair of small town shooters can help the program sustain success while a talented, though young, roster finds its way.

Catching Up With Anthony Gill
Image: Anthony GillUVa secured a talented class of recruits in the 2012 class, but Justin Anderson, Taylor Barnette, Evan Nolte and Mike Tobey weren't the only key acquisitions for the Cavaliers this past offseason. There was also 6'8", 230-pound power forward Anthony Gill, who at this time last year was preparing for his freshman season at the University of South Carolina. I caught up with Gill at UVa basketball's media day several weeks ago, and he addressed his transfer and many other topic

JHoo's Things I Learned 2012: Wake Forest
Image: La'Roy ReynoldsVirginia lost its sixth straight game this past weekend, falling to Wake Forest on Saturday 16-10. This was a tough one, no question. Tough for the team, tough for the coaches, tough for the fans. Even worse, it was a tough loss - in a very winnable game - going into a bye week. So everything that we break down, just like everything the team breaks down, is going to linger.
