Soccer Teams Top VT

From Virginia Athletic Media Relations Official Releases

The Virginia men's soccer team rallied from a 2-0 second-half deficit and took home a 3-2 overtime victory over Virginia Tech on Friday evening in front of 3,555 fans on Senior Night at Klockner Stadium.

"We responded well in the second half," UVa coach George Gelnovatch said. "We played inspired in the second half, and getting that first goal got the crowd into it, which really ignited us. For this young group to do what they did tonight says a lot to me. We had to push every button in the book, but they responded."

Zach Carroll headed home the golden goal with just 12 seconds remaining in overtime to extend Virginia's unbeaten streak against the Hokies to seven matches. Three players scored goals for the Cavaliers (8-6-1, 2-4-0 ACC), while Scott Thomsen notched a pair of assists off corner kicks.

UVa finishes its regular season schedule with matches at Boston College (Oct. 26) and NC State (Nov. 1).

The Virginia women's soccer team didn't need similar dramatics to take down the Hokies on Sunday. The No. 11 Cavaliers cruised to a 5-0 win in Blacksburg as senior forward Caroline Miller posted three goals and an assist, tying the school record for points in a game with seven. The Hoos are 12-4-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the ACC, which clinched the program's 19th straight season of finishing .500 or better in conference play.

"This was a big result for us," said UVa coach Steve Swanson. "Coming off the disappointing loss at Florida State last week, this was a good response by our team. We take this rivalry very seriously and knew we were going to have to be at our best to get a win down here. This is a big confidence builder for us moving forward."

The Cavaliers close out the regular season on Thursday at 7 p.m. as they host Boston College for Senior Night.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Basketball takes center stage in recruiting coverage this week, and for good reason.

The Rock School (Gainesville, FL) senior center Joel Embiid and Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) senior point guard Devon Hall made official visits to the University of Virginia this past weekend. Embiid is a top remaining target, while Hall joins Encino (CA) point guard London Perrantes as the current members of Virginia's class of 2013.

With two quality guards in the fold, Tony Bennett and company are hoping to finish out this class with a big man. The 7'0" Embiid is one of three primary targets along with Briarcrest Christian (Eads, TN) power forward Austin Nichols and Boone (Orlando, FL) power forward Schuyler Rimmer. Embiid made officials to Texas and Kansas in the weekends prior to this past one. Florida is expected to get an official as well with Marquette and Ohio State vying for the fifth and final one.

This week, I'll have updates on both Embiid and Hall to talk about their visits. I'll also have more on the basketball recruiting front, including a preview of Cape Henry Collegiate's talented team. Hall leads the way, but head coach Mark Hall Sr. (Devon's father) boasts other major college prospects on his roster. CPC went undefeated last season, capturing a state championship in the process.

This Thursday through Saturday, the aforementioned Rimmer is scheduled to be on Grounds for an official visit. I'll have reaction from the 6'9" standout following his experience. Rimmer is also considering offers from Southern Cal, Stanford, and Vanderbilt.

On the football front, I'll have a full article up on class of 2013 commitment Malcolm Cook, who has turned in a memorable season at Fork Union Prep (VA). The senior safety has 14 interceptions on the year, including two in a win over Collegiate last Friday. Cook, who was featured in last Friday's Sabre Scoop feature, talks football and recruiting in this latest update.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Scoop: Embiid Set To Visit
This edition of Sabre Scoop (formerly Recruiting News, Notes, and Links) provides the latest on uncommitted 7'0" senior Joel Embiid, who will be in Charlottesville on an official visit this weekend. On the football front, a Richmond (VA) area prospect is performing at a high level and looking like a possible diamond in the rough for the Cavaliers

Strategy Session: Few 2013 Targets Remain
In this "Strategy Session," I take a look at the few primary remaining targets the Virginia coaches are eyeing and take a look ahead to the class of 2014, which features some prominent in-state targets that are already on the national recruiting radar.

Must-Read Post For UVa Baseball Fans

CMUHoo, a poster on TheSabre.com, wrote out a post-practice recap about the Virginia baseball team after the Hoos wrapped up its fall season this past weekend. Here are a couple of paragraphs from that post:

"Offense: Let's start with the biggest positive first. We should have a very good offense this season. We lost Bruno, Taylor and Werman, but return all the other regulars (mostly freshman last year) from what was already a solid offense. Add in Joe McCarthy, a healthy Mike Papi, and some new young depth, along with a year in the weight room for last year's freshman, and I really like how things set up.

Pitching: The big question coming into the fall was who would step up among the young arms. At the moment, that's still an open question. We know that there is talent among the freshmen, but we will need an awful lot of them to contribute this spring, and that is asking a lot. Injuries to a whole bunch of returners make predicting the pitching staff for the spring difficult, because as an outsider I don't know who will be available, but I'll take a shot at it."

Around the World of Wahoo Sports ...

  • No. 5 Virginia Stays Perfect at Home: The No. 5 Virginia field hockey improved to 9-0 at home this season with a 4-0 victory over No. 25 Wake Forest in a game that held special meaning for the team. During pregame warm-ups, the Cavaliers wore matching teal green t-shirts emblazoned with a pink ribbon as well as teal wristbands and pink shoelaces. The players had chosen this game to raise awareness of ovarian and breast cancer and, as was spelled out on the backs of their shirts, to dedicate the game to the memory of the late Judy Selenski, mother of forward Paige Selenski. The senior scored her ACC-leading 23rd goal of the season and had five points in the game, giving her 228 in her career, just two points shy of tying Meredith Thorpe (1995-98) for the Cavalier career points record (230).
  • Virginia Takes Down Wake Forest, 3-1, for First ACC Win: Virginia volleyball freshmen Natalie Bausback and Kayla Sears combined for 41 kills as the Cavaliers defeated Wake Forest, 25-21, 27-25, 17-25, 25-23, for their first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season Saturday night.
  • Virginia Claims Top Collegiate Spot in Championship Eights at Head of the Charles: The 2012 NCAA Champion Virginia rowing team opened its fall schedule with a successful showing Sunday at the 48th annual Head of the Charles in Boston. In the Championship Eights, the Cavaliers, the defending champions in the event, were once again the top collegiate boat in a time of 16:35.163. That time was good enough for third overall and ahead of the London Rowing Club (made up of British and New Zealand Olympians), boats from the Canadian and Dutch national teams, and college boats from Yale, Radcliffe, Princeton and Stanford. In the Championship Fours, the Cavaliers were the second-fastest collegiate crew and fourth overall in a time of 19:21.590, behind only the Canadian national team, defending champion Vesper Boat Club and Yale. Up next, the Cavaliers compete at the Princeton Chase in Princeton, N.J., on Oct. 28.
  • UVa Men's Golfers Wrap Up Fall with Fourth-Place Finish at U.S. Collegiate: The Virginia men's golf team wrapped up the fall portion of is schedule with an impressive fourth-place showing at the U.S. Collegiate Championship at The Golf Club of Atlanta in Alpharetta, Ga. The 15-team field included 10 teams currently ranked in the top 25 of the Golfstat rankings. Sophomore Ji Soo Park led the Cavaliers during the final round with a career-best round of 4-under 68. He posted the first top-10 finish of his career, placing ninth at 2-over 218.
  • Two Singles Players, Doubles Teams Advance at ITA Atlantic Regional: The Virginia men's tennis team had two singles players and two doubles teams advance at the ITA Atlantic Regional during Sunday's play at the Snyder Tennis Center. Play started Sunday with the round of 16 of singles, with Jarmere Jenkins and Harrison Richmond advancing to the quarterfinals. Jenkins, the top seed, downed Bryan Welnetz of Penn State 7-5, 7-6 (2). Richmond, the No. 7 seed, rallied for a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-1 win over Hunter Koontz of Virginia Tech. In doubles, Virginia had two teams advance to the semifinals with a pair of wins. The top seeded duo of Richmond and Alex Domijan topped Jimmy Davis and Scott Keaton of George Mason 8-6 in the round of 16 and Carlos Lopez-Villa and Albert Ochagavia of Old Dominion 8-3 in the quarterfinals. Blog Banter: A Bennett Thought On Sene

By Kris Wright

Cvillehoops13 and I have both commented recently on the Hoos' struggles defending on-ball screens. Essentially, several players are over-playing the dribbler as the screener's defender. As a follow-up to those discussions, here's a thought from UVa coach Tony Bennett on Assane Sene, who started for the first time this season and played 28 minutes in the win over NJIT.

"He had probably his best practice of the year over the break where he really scored well, was catching everything," Bennett said. "He guards ball screens pretty well. A lot of teams look at your five man and they'll ball screen him a lot and he's been real good defensively with that."

As the season moves along, Sene's ability to continue to grasp some of the defensive nuances that Coach Bennett prefers could be a key to his playing time and the team's competitiveness in ACC play.

The Sunday Sampler 2012 - Wake Forest
Image: Khalek ShepherdFrom the opening kickoff of Virginia's 16-10 loss to Wake Forest on Sunday, changes were evident on special teams as the Hoos unveiled a different alignment to receive that kick. Unfortunately, the scheme shift was more sanguine than successful as a multitude of errors proved costly again on special teams. The Sunday Sampler takes a closer look at that and the game against the Demon Deacons.

UVa's Losing Streak Grows Against Wake
Image: Coach Mike LondonVirginia's 2012 season has become a broken record and that is heart-breaking for Wahoos everywhere. Turnovers, penalties, special teams miscues, and a points-averse offense wiped out UVa's chances of a win against Wake Forest on Saturday as the Demon Deacons grabbed a 16-10 victory. Those same issues have reigned supreme for much of the season and the Hoos have six straight losses to show for it.

2012 Watch List: Wake Forest
Image: Jake McGeeAnother week, another read option team. The Virginia football team welcomes Wake Forest to Charlottesville this weekend and the Demon Deacons will bring variations of the popular spread offense and read option schemes to town. What are some other wrinkles this week with Wake? The Watch List takes a peek at some items to keep an eye on this week as UVa tries to snap a five-game losing streak.

Greg's Grades And Trends: Maryland, Wake
Image: Perry JonesIn what seems to be a habitual issue, the Cavaliers can't seem to put all three elements of special teams, offense and defense together in one game. UVa has had one game this season where all three units received an above average grade, but Maryland was not it. At some point in time, the coaches need to be held accountable for the performance. That time is now. Let's take a closer look at the Maryland grades and prepare for Wake Forest with a look at some trends.

Harold Starts To Emerge
Image: Eli HaroldIn high school, Eli Harold admits, it was easy to rush the quarterback. He often was just faster or stronger than the opponent so he could get into the backfield and make plays regularly for Ocean Lakes High School. Now a college freshman at Virginia, things aren't as simple, but the elite recruiting prospect is starting to catch on now.

Tailgating With Chefhoo 2012: Wake Forest
I know no one looks forward to a 12:30 start time. You get up at the crack of dawn to leave the house, set up your tailgate in the cold and then what do you eat at 10 a.m.? Why breakfast of course! And contrary to popular opinion, there are a number of breakfast foods that go very well with cold "beverages".

Game Preview 2012: Wake Forest
Image: Phillip SimsRinse and repeat. For the fifth straight week, the Virginia football team must try to bounce back from a loss. Mired in a five-game losing streak, the next opportunity to snap out of the slump comes against a Wake Forest team with its own issues. The Game Preview takes a closer look with Editor Kris Wright's Keys to the Game and his pick for the week

Wake, UVa Search For A Win
Virginia is in the midst of a five-game losing streak headed into this Saturday's matchup against Wake Forest. With just five games remaining on the schedule and a 2-5 record, the Cavaliers' bowl hopes are dwindling fast. While not yet mathematically eliminated from postseason play, the team has to improve greatly to avoid a losing record this season. The Hoos talked about dealing with adversity and more during Monday's weekly press conference.

JHoo's Things I Learned 2012: Maryland
Image: LaRoy ReynoldsThat. Was. No. Fun. Am I referring to the end of the season for my beloved Cincinnati Reds or Virginia's game against Maryland? Is there any way you possibly can tell? Since I have neither the inclination nor the ability to break down why the Reds couldn't win one stinkin' game at home against the Giants, I suppose I will break down Virginia's effort against Maryland instead.
