Domijan Wins ITA All-American Championship

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia junior Alex Domijan won the singles title at the 2012 ITA All-American Chamoionships, downing Peter Kobelt of Ohio State 7-5, 6-1 in Sunday's final at the Case Tennis Center. Domijan, who also won the event as a freshman in 2010, becomes just the third player in the 34-year history of the event to win the fall's most prestigious tournament twice.

Domijan, the No. 6 seed in this year's tournament, dropped just one set in his six victories. He joins Al Parker of Georgia (1989, 1990) and K.J. Hippensteel of Stanford (1999, 2001) as the only two-time ITA All-American Singles Champions. Domijan's two titles, combined with Mitchell Frank's (Annandale, Va.) title last year, make Virginia the first school to win the event three consecutive years.

Domijan is unbeaten in his career at the ITA All-American Championships, winning the title in both his appearances. He missed last year's event due to injury.

"I thought this tournament was a good start to the season," said Domijan. "I was pleased with how I played, in terms of being aggressive and making shots. I accomplished what I wanted to in this tournament in terms of my level of play, and that makes me happier than having a title next to my name. I can now look to build upon this level as the season goes along."

   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Monsignor Donovan (Toms River, N.J.) standout Brad Henson, one of three offensive line recruits in UVa's class of 2013, was in attendance for the Cavaliers' contest against Louisiana Tech. He plans to return this weekend for the Maryland game. I caught up with the talented prospect, who discussed which position Mike London and company want him to play initially, his impression of the Hoos' football program, and more.

Multiple outlets report that West Catholic (Philadelphia, PA) offensive tackle Jaryd Jones-Smith plans to take an official visit to UVa this weekend. I plan to have more on the 6'7", 300-pound prospect before and after the trip.

On the Good Ol Blog, I'll provide a list of all those recruits confirmed to be in Scott Stadium this Saturday. Today, be sure to check out the latest "Week In Review," which includes a report on safety prospect Malcolm Cook's big-time performance last week.

Looking ahead a bit, the University of Virginia men's basketball program will host two touted low post recruits in the coming weekends. On the weekend of Oct. 20, the Hoos will play host to 7'0" Joel Embiid, who has become one of the most coveted centers in the 2013 class. Virginia is one of five finalists for the Rock School (Gainesville, FL) prospect, who is also considering Florida, Kansas, Marquette, and Texas. He took an official visit to Texas this past weekend, will take an official to Kansas this weekend, and then will be in Charlottesville for an official the weekend of the 20th. EDGE subscribers can read more about Embiid in the article I posted last week (see below).

The Cavaliers are also set to play host to Boone (Orlando, FL) senior power forward Schuyler Rimmer from Oct. 25-27. Rimmer took an official visit to Stanford this past weekend. The 6'9" prospect had already visited Southern Cal, and he has upcoming visits scheduled to UVa and Vanderbilt (Nov. 2-4).

Virginia currently has two commitments in the class of 2013. They are Virginia Beach (VA) point guard Devon Hall and Encino (CA) point guard London Perrantes. Both prospects are expected to sign with the Hoos in the Early Signing Period, which begins on Nov. 14 and lasts through Nov. 21.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Selenski, Krzysik Earn ACC Honors

Official UVa Media Relations News Releases

Virginia's Paige Selenski was named the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey Freshman of the Year, the league office announced Sunday following the championship game of the conference tournament. She is just the third player in program history to receive the honor and is the first since Meredith Elwell in 1996.

"It is a fantastic recognition to Paige and the University of Virginia," said Virginia mentor Michele Madison. "She is an outstanding talent among UVa's great first-year class and no one works harder in practice. Her game gets better and better as she is a great listener and always accepts her role on the team.

Selenksi, a forward, led Virginia in scoring with 17 goals and tied for a team-best with nine assists for 43 points this season. She played in all 21 games and tallied a team-high 97 shots. Additionally, six of her goals were game-winners.

Meanwhile on the soccer field, Virginia senior defender Nikki Krzysik was named the 2008 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and five Cavaliers earned All-ACC honors as the conference announced its women's soccer honors on Tuesday.

"Our entire program is extremely proud of the players who earned 2008 All-ACC honors, especially Nikki's distinction as the Defensive Player of the Year," said head coach Steve Swanson. "To have as many players as we had represented on both squads is a tribute to every member of our team and how hard they all have worked throughout the regular season. We are looking forward to the ACC tournament this week."

Krzysik becomes the third Cavalier to be named ACC Defensive Player of the Year since the league split the player of the year award into an offensive and defensive honor in 2004. Sarah Huffman was the inaugural Defensive Player of the Year in 2004 and Becky Sauerbrunn took the honor last season.

The Sunday Sampler 2012 - Duke
Image: Coach Mike LondonFans are frustrated. Losing to Duke, improved and 5-1 or not, does that to people. Ultimately, however, the single loss isn't what has ruffled feathers so far in 2012. No, the perceived lack of improvement and margin of defeat along with some disturbing patterns six games into this season are what's truly bugging fans thirsty for sustained football success.

Duke Dusts Virginia
For the fourth straight week, the Virginia football team fell behind by at least three scores in the second half and lost in disappointing fashion. The Cavaliers continued struggling to score and lost the turnover battle again as they got beat in all phases of the game in a 42-17 loss to Duke on Saturday. The Blue Devils have three straight victories in Durham against Hoos.

2012 Watch List: Duke
Image: Demetrious Nicholson Virginia has lost to Duke in its previous two trips to Durham, but this week's game is a big one for both teams' hopes of chasing down bowl eligibility. What can the Cavaliers do to snap a three-game losing streak and get back to .500 on the season? The Watch List takes a look at some of the match-up areas in Saturday's game between UVa and Duke.

Greg's Grades And Trends: La Tech, Duke
Image: Henry ColeyWe may look back Virginia's 44-38 loss to Louisiana Tech as the defining game of the 2012 season. Not so much from a won-loss perspective, but from a wake-up call perspective. Even after posting 625 yards and a 7.81 yards per play average against the 122nd ranked defense in the nation, Virginia still could not win a game on its home turf. Why not? Missed tackles, no power running game, poor pass coverage, and coaching blunders. If Saturday's game showed us anything, it shows that there is a drastic need for Virginia's rah-rah head coach to get in the faces of coaches and personnel and make some changes in who and how his team plays the game.

Tailgating With Chefhoo 2012: Duke
At first glance, cooking sausage on the grill seems like a pretty easy task. Heat grill, add sausage, pull off when cooked ... right? As with most grilled foods, sausages are easy to cook, but challenging to get that perfect char without overcooking them. By following a few simple rules, you will be able to separate yourself from your buddy that brings the burnt sausages to the table and says something like "I guess I shouldn't have walked away from the grill, huh?"

Game Preview 2012: Duke
Image: Phillip Sims The Cavaliers have lost three straight games and sit below .500 on the season at 2-3 so the theme of the week appears to be "get back on track" for the Virginia football program as it searches for back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2004-2005. The recent losing skid combined with offensive struggles and turnovers has led to a week of change for the Hoos as well. Michael Rocco, who has started 18 straight games at quarterback for UVa, has been replaced by Phillip Sims, assuming a leg injury doesn't keep him out of action in Durham.

QBs Are Top Topic As Duke Looms
It is Duke week as Virginia heads back into conference play for the rest of the 2012 season. Of course, that's not what most of the questions were about at UVa's weekly media meeting. No, as most fans probably expected, the conversation quickly turned to the Cavalier quarterback position.

Things I Learned 2012: La Tech
Image: Tim SmithOuch. Losses are never fun, and it is not like UVa was a big favorite to beat Louisiana Tech this past Saturday, but still ... I mean ... you know ... ouch. There is plenty for Virginia to learn coming out of this game, a game that could have been won. Let's discuss a few of those Things here.
