Some La Tech Leftovers

With all the storylines coming out of Virginia's 44-38 loss to Louisiana Tech on Saturday, some little nuggets got lost in the postgame shuffle of quarterbacks and penalties. Here are some notes from UVa Athletics Media Relations about the Hoos.

  • Virginia's 480 passing yards was the most in a single game in program history, passing the previous high of 417 at Duke in 2010.
  • The Cavaliers had 625 yards of total offense. The last time the Cavaliers had more than 600 yards in total offense was when they put up 643 against Duke in 2010, a game that was also a Virginia loss.
  • The 73-yard touchdown pass from Michael Rocco to Khalek Shepherd was the longest offensive play of the season for Virginia.
  • Virginia is now 7 for 11 on fourth down attempts this season.
  • The Cavaliers in the Red Zone this year: 13 of 16, 11 TDs, 2 field goals.
  • Perry Jones' 36-yard pass to Tim Smith was the second pass of his career and the second touchdown pass of his career. Jones threw a 37-yard TD pass to Smith last year at Miami.
  • With 182 all-purpose yards, Jones passes Marcus Wilson (3,079) for No. 12 all-time at UVa in career all-purpose yards. Jones now has 3,250 career all-purpose yards.
  • With 82 rushing yards, Jones passed Antonio Rice (1,726) and Cedric Peerman (1,749) for No. 19 all-time at UVa in rushing yards. Jones now has 1,767 rushing yards.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Olympia (Orlando, FL) offensive tackle Shawn Curtis is wrapping up an official visit to the University of Virginia on Monday. I hope to have reaction from the 6'5", 275-pound senior.

Curtis is a relatively new target on Virginia's class of 2013 recruiting scene. The staff first made contact in early September, but an offer is on the table if he wants it. Curtis is also considering offers from Duke, Iowa State, Mississippi State, South Florida, and Syracuse. He has scheduled official visits to Syracuse, Iowa State, and Wake Forest.

As soon as I get any news on Curtis' visit, I'll be sure to post it on the EDGE message board.

In addition to Curtis, I'll be following up with other visitors from last Saturday's game against Louisiana Tech. Hylton (Woodbridge, VA) senior offensive tackle Chasz Wright does not have an offer from Virginia but reportedly does have offers from Connecticut, NC State and Penn State. The offensive line is a position it appears the staff is open to adding another prospect to in the class of 2013, so we'll see where the 6'7", 275-pound Wright stands with the Hoos.

Top sophomore defensive back D'Andre Payne has been verbally offered by UVa as well as many, many other programs. The H.D. Woodson (Washington, D.C.) product was in Scott Stadium this weekend as well, and I hope to reach him for reaction and a general update on his recruitment.

LB/H-Back Zach Bradshaw and OL Brad Henson were among the commits in attendance. This week, I plan to have much more with those two prospects. Bradshaw is projected as an outside linebacker but could be an effective weapon on offense, just as he is for Damascus (MD).

Henson, a standout at Monsignor Donovan (Toms River, N.J.), is one of three quality offensive line commits the Cavs have in the class of 2013. He could be called upon to add immediate depth at center next year. We'll see what he is hearing from the staff in that regard.

For a complete list of confirmed visitors at the Louisiana Tech game, check out the Good Ol Blog. Also check out the Blog for the latest "Week In Review." Virginia QB commit Turtle Cutler helped Ocean Lakes (Va. Beach, VA) to a huge Beach District win last Friday night, and the Dolphins are now 6-0 on the season.

Checking In On Chavis, Valles
Image: Max VallesThe 2012 Fork Union Military Academy (VA) postgraduate football program features two players -- defensive tackle/offensive lineman Tyrell Chavis and tight end/defensive end Max Valles -- from the University of Virginia's 2012 recruiting class. I caught up with longtime FUMA postgrad coach John Shuman for the latest on these two, on and off the field.

During his team's recent win over Denver, Houston quarterback Matt Schaub took a vicious hit from linebacker Joe Mays. Schaub not only lost his helmet on the play, he also lost part of his ear. CBS Sports' Shannon Sharpe sat down with Schaub this week to talk about it. You can view that video interview here.

Issue No. 120 - Jan. 9, 2004

Matt Schaub to play in Senior Bowl

UVa quarterback Matt Schaub has been chosen to play in the 2004 Senior Bowl in Mobile Alabama on January 24th. Sources indicate that Schaub will start for the South team, which also features quarterbacks Philip Rivers (N.C. State) and J.P. Losman (Tulane). The North team features three of the nation's top quarterbacks in Jon Navarre (Michigan), Cody Pickett (Washington) and Josh Harris (Bowling Green). Full rosters should be released on or just prior to January 18th.

Schaub broke just about every quarterback record at UVa, including touchdown passes for a career. His touchdown strike to sophomore tight end Heath Miller in the 2003 Continental Tire Bowl broke Shawn Moore's record of 55. Schaub also holds records for passing yardage in a career, pass completions in a career, pass attempts in a career, as well as 300 and 200-yard passing games in a career.

The Sunday Sampler 2012 - La Tech
Image: Phillip SimsFor Saturday's game with Louisiana Tech, a disappointing 44-38 loss for the Hoos, I spent the day on the sidelines snapping photos for the site. So instead of a single focus to lead off The Sunday Sampler this week, I thought I'd take on some of the hot topics among Virginia fans and message board posters out there. Yes, that means there are some thoughts on the quarterbacks.

Hoos Stumble Against Bulldogs
Image: Perry JonesIn a game full of penalties and self-inflicted wounds for Virginia, it is only fitting that the game with Louisiana Tech on Saturday was decided on an infraction. On a day when the Hoos were flagged 16 times, a final 5-yard infraction gave the visitors a first down and the Bulldogs ran out the clock with a 44-38 victory in front of a crowd of 42,027 fans at Scott Stadium.

Photo Gallery: La Tech 44, UVa 38
Image: Kevin ParksThe Virginia football team led early, but gave up 34 unanswered points as Louisiana Tech stormed ahead. A late Cavalier rally came up short Saturday and the Bulldogs prevailed 44-38. Check out 40 free photos from the game, including a look at the retro uniforms worn in recognition of halftime honoree Frank Quayle.

2012 Watch List: La Tech
Image: Darius JenningsThe Virginia football team enters this week's contest with Louisiana Tech with a 2-2 record. The Cavaliers would like to end their two-game skid with a win, but that won't be an easy task. The Bulldogs have one of the nation's highest-scoring offenses. Of course with Tech's shaky defense on the other side of the ball, the media has been forecasting a potential shootout this week at Scott Stadium. Take a look at the "Watch List" to prepare for some wrinkles to monitor during the game.

Greg's Grades And Trends: TCU, La Tech
Neither offense nor defense showed well against TCU and some old ghosts like dropped passes, missed tackles and poor execution haunted the Hoos. In this report I'll take a look at three trends that have affected Virginia's play over the last few weeks and I'll look at how poor tackling, assignment football and an improving running game could impact Virginia's game against Louisiana Tech on Saturday.

Tailgating With Chefhoo 2012: La Tech
While last week's column focused on how to properly grill a steak, I thought with this week's opponent being from the great state of Louisiana, we would focus on grilling seafood. Grilling seafood can be quite the challenge, but by following a few easy steps, every Wahoo can become proficient enough to impress anyone.

Game Preview 2012: La Tech
Image: Billy SchautzDeja vu? For the second straight season, the Virginia football team enters the fifth game at Scott Stadium with a 2-2 record and a WAC opponent on the docket. Last season, the Cavaliers pulled out a 21-20 overtime win against Idaho and that jumpstarted a 6-2 finish to the regular season. Can the Hoos get some momentum going again with 2011 WAC Champion Louisiana Tech in town?

Louisiana Tech Heads To Town
Image: Michael RoccoVirginia's opponent this week may not carry the most recognizable name for fans, but Louisiana Tech and its high-octane offense may get everyone's attention Saturday at Scott Stadium. The Bulldogs, after all, bring a 3-0 record to Charlottesville after putting up more than 50 points in all three games. UVa's players already know that they have a challenge on their hands this week.

JHoo's Things I Learned 2012: TCU
Image: Dominique TerrellThere were a few things to take out of Virginia game against TCU, even if not nearly as many as anyone - coach, player, or fan - would have liked. In what always set up as a challenging season, going on the road to TCU certainly qualified as a challenge, but there are a few things worth discussing from the game ... and that is the task before us.
