Retro Unis And Honoring Quayle

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release

The Virginia football team will wear a special throwback uniform for its Sept. 29 home game against Louisiana Tech. The Nike uniforms are modeled after those worn by the Cavaliers' 1968 team that featured ACC Player of the Year Frank Quayle.

During the game's halftime ceremonies, Quayle will be honored for his involvement with the Virginia football program as a student-athlete and then as a member of the school's radio broadcast crew for 29 years. He will be presented a framed copy of his retro jersey.

The members of the 1968 Virginia football team in attendance will join Quayle on the field for the recognition.

A native of Garden City, N.Y., Quayle rushed for 2,695 yards and caught 83 passes for 1,145 yards during his career. During the 1968 season, he rushed for 1,213 yards and caught 30 passes for 426 yards. In addition to being named the ACC's Player of the Year, he also earned the league's Athlete of the Year Award. Quayle also starred on the Virginia lacrosse team during his collegiate athletic career.

Quayle's number 24 is one of six numbers retired by the Virginia football program.

The retro Virginia game helmets will feature a special decal as a salute to Quayle.

Fans will have the chance to purchase a special commemorative 32-ounce souvenir cup at concession stands that features Quayle's image. The Virginia game program will include a special retro cover similar in style to those produced during that era.

Check out some Frank Quayle highlights in this video created by UVa Athletics:

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

My latest Strategy Session article was delayed slightly but will be posted early this week. It'll include a look at both the 2013 and 2014 classes. The emphasis, though, will be on 2014 and the positions and players Mike London and company may focus their efforts on for that class.

UVa is all but finished with its 2013 class, boasting 18 commitments (20 if you count 2012 holdovers Tyrell Chavis and Max Valles, who are currently in Fork Union's postgraduate program). Only one or two spots remain in the high school senior class.

The majority of UVa's class of 2013 enjoyed victory on the gridiron this past weekend. For the latest on how the future Hoos performed last week, check out the Good Ol Blog for the latest Week In Review.

Also this week, I'll take a look at this Friday's big Beach District match-up between Ocean Lakes and Salem. The game features two of the top quarterbacks in the state in Ocean Lakes' Corwin Cutler and Salem's Bucky Hodges. Cutler has committed to Virginia, while Hodges has cast his lot with the Hokies.

On Saturday, UVa hopes to rebound from two straight losses when it takes on Louisiana Tech. As always, we'll let you know which prospects were confirmed to be in attendance. One known attendee will be Cavaliers class of 2013 recruit LaChaston Smith, a linebacker prospect out of Statesville, North Carolina.

This will be the first Virginia game Smith has seen in person this year. He is expected to enroll in January of 2013. I plan to catch up with the speedy standout for comments following the trip, so stay tuned.

Dowling, Farrow Are Juniors To Watch
Image: Donovan DowlingIn-state junior wide receivers Donovan Dowling and B.J. Farrow both seem likely to land scholarship levels on some level. Major FBS offers are not out of the question for either player, and both players - Dowling for Varina and Farrow for Liberty Christian Academy - have demonstrated their talents early in this season.

Virginia Field Hockey Nets 500th Win

The No. 7 Virginia field hockey team took down No. 12 Boston University 2-0 on Sunday. The victory marked the 500th win for the program. Since 1973, the Cavaliers have amassed a record of 500-266-21 under eight head coaches.

The Hoos picked up two road wins on their trip north. Virginia earned a 3-1 victory in its ACC opener Friday night at No. 22 Boston College.

"It was a good trip to Boston to get wins on two quality teams," Virginia coach Michele Madison said. "At this point of the season, is a huge momentum boost".

Paige Selenski scored her 15th goal of the season in the win against Boston U.

Blog Banter: FB Recruiting Notes - Latest On Moses

I caught up with Fork Union Military Academy Postgraduate head coach John Shuman today. Shuman, fresh off of FUMA's Spring Break, says 6-7, 340-pound Morgan Moses continues to work towards qualifying.

"He took the latest SAT last Saturday. He is scheduled to take the ACT on April 10," Shuman said.

Moses will finish up a course at Fork Union in early April. He will then take one more course. Shuman is hoping for top grades in those two courses, as two top grades would help Moses in his attempt to qualify.

"He is doing real good in the classroom, so we feel he is moving forward," Shuman said.

Moses will take all standardized tests.

"He is anxious to get over to UVa on April 10 after the SAT," Shuman said. "I told him to get this done, get the points, and he'll be over there all year next year."

The Sunday Sampler 2012 - TCU
Image: Coach Jim ReidThere's a disturbing trend developing for Virginia's defense this season: giving up big scoring plays. The Cavaliers allowed another huge touchdown play against TCU on Saturday in a 27-7 loss. Horned Frog receiver Brandon Carter sprinted to a 68-yard touchdown reception that put the Hoos behind on the scoreboard in the first quarter and they trailed the rest of the way. The Sunday Sampler takes a look at that and more in the aftermath of the TCU loss.

TCU Takes Down UVa
Image: Dominique TerrellAfter struggling mightily against Georgia Tech last week, the Virginia football team flew west in search of a bounce-back game on Saturday. The Cavaliers didn't find any redemption medicine, however, as TCU's success at home continued in a 27-7 victory. The Horned Frogs own the nation's longest winning streak and have won 28 of their 29 home games. Virginia, which fell to 0-3 all-time in the state of Texas, has lost two straight games and owns a 2-2 record.

2012 Watch List: TCU
Image: Darius JenningsThe Virginia football team travels to Fort Worth on Saturday to face a fast and tough Texas Christian squad. Throughout the week, much of the discussion has focused on TCU's strong defense that shuts down the run and makes it hard to score. But the Horned Frogs offers some other challenges too and this week's Watch List article takes a closer look.

Greg's Grades And Trends: GT, TCU
Image: Perry JonesThere really is no other way to say it, Virginia got beat in every phase of Saturday's contest with Georgia Tech. Out-coached, out-hustled and out-played. The Yellow Jackets were more physical too. JHoo's weekly column had it right when he wrote that this was a brutally difficult mismatch, especially the Tech spread-option against the inexperienced UVa defense. Can the Hoos regroup for TCU? Let's take a look at the grades and some things to keep tabs on in Texas.

Tailgating With Chefhoo 2012: TCU
I originally had said this column wouldn't have any themes this year, but how can I overlook our first game in Texas in more than a decade? When I think of Texas, I think of beef. And when I think of beef, I think of steak! So let's dive into this week's tailgating recipe.

Game Preview 2012: TCU
Image: Darius Jennings Road redemption? Revenge for 2009? Maybe just a chance to forget about last week's 56-20 debacle at Georgia Tech? It's hard to pin down what this week's "theme" may be for the Virginia football team, but rest assured no one in orange and blue wants to get embarrassed for the second week in a row after the poor showing in Atlanta last week. The problem, of course, is that this week's trip to Fort Worth, Texas, isn't going to be any easier. In fact, it may be tougher.

TCU Up Next For Virginia
For an offense that is struggling in several areas, Fort Worth isn't ideally where you'd start a search for answers. Fort Worth, after all, is home to the Texas Christian University football team and the Horned Frogs don't make things easy on opposing offenses. In fact, it's outright hard to score on the TCU defense.

JHoo's Things I Learned 2012: Georgia Tech
Image: Ausar WalcottFor me, it just would have been better if this week of football hadn't happened. I mean, I thought the Chicago Bears game on Thursday night was bad - it was - but Saturday wasn't much better for the Hoos. Remembering the game won't be much more fun than watching the game was over the weekend, but that's the task before us. Here are some things I learned from the Georgia Tech game.
