This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Here is what is planned this week on the recruiting front ...

5-star senior PF/C Austin Nichols made an official visit to UVa this past weekend, and I plan to have an update on his experience and where he will go from here. The Briarcrest Christian (Eads, TN) tweeted his initial thoughts early Saturday morning, when he wrote:

"UVA is great! Great atmosphere! The coaches are also great!"

As of now, the expectation is that Nichols will take his remaining four official visits before making a commitment. Up next is an official visit to Vanderbilt this weekend. Duke is scheduled for early October. Auburn, Memphis and Tennessee are the other finalists here.

UVa basketball scored a commitment from Crespi (Encino, CA) senior PG London Perrantes last Monday. This week, I hope to have an in-depth EDGE piece on the 6'1" floor general, who picked the Hoos over Arizona State, Illinois, and Washington State.

Crespi head coach Russell White had the following to say about his prized recruit:

"He sees the floor very well. He always has. He has an innate ability - and this is nothing I've taught him - to know what's going to happen two or three seconds in advance. He changes speeds and makes ball-fakes as well as anyone I've seen, and I've been coaching high school since I graduated [California Lutheran University] in 1994. He is tremendous at changing speeds with the dribble and using ball-fakes to create openings."

Tony Bennett and company now have two commitments in the class of 2013, including Perrantes and Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) point guard Devon Hall.

On the football front, some of the state's best class of 2014 recruits were in Charlottesville this past Saturday to see Virginia's 17-16 win over Penn State. There is a list of those confirmed visitors on the Good Ol Blog, and this week I'll be busy catching up with as many of these recruits as possible for reaction to the game.

As always, be sure to check out the Good Ol Blog for the "Week In Review," a look at how UVa's commitments performed on the gridiron in the past week. Only Salisbury School (CT) offensive tackle Sadiq Olanrewaju has yet to suit up for a regular season game, but all others were in action this past weekend.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre EDGE recruiting updates since the last SabreMail ...

Gilman Vs Good Counsel Recap
Image: Brendan MarshallThe top two high school football programs in the state of Maryland squared off against each other last Friday night. The Good Counsel Falcons (Olney), featuring UVa-bound QB Brendan Marshall and CB/WR Kirk Garner, hosted Micah Kiser-led Gilman (Baltimore) with both teams looking to rebound after losing in the ESPN High School Kick-off the previous week. The hard-fought contest needed an overtime period to be decided, and the Falcons came out on top with a 20-19 win.

Perrantes Commits To UVa!
One visit was all it took to convince Crespi (Encino, CA) senior point guard London Perrantes that the University of Virginia was where he wanted to be for the next four years. The 6'1", 180-pound prospect has verbally committed to Cavaliers head coach Tony Bennett.

Sampson Enters Hall of Fame

Virginia basketball legend Ralph Sampson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday. Sampson was the three-time National Player of the Year while at Virginia. He became the No. 1 pick in the 1983 NBA Draft and won NBA Rookie of the Year. Sampson earned NBA All-Star status four times before knee injuries slowed his career.

Also make sure to read this FREE essay from Emily Giffin, who writes that Sampson always did his best, where he was, with what he had.

D'Brickshaw Ferguson Commits to UVa

D'Brickashaw Ferguson, a 6-5, 250-pound athlete, is New York's top offensive linemen. He committed to the Cavaliers this past weekend.

"I think UVa's an excellent academic institution," Ferguson said. "Also, I was very impressed with the coaching staff. I was impressed that I was able to have a relationship with these guys. I was impressed with the plan that they had for me. I just think it was a great fit for me personally.

"I also thought of Virginia as a good University. At the point that I really knew that this was the place for me was probably a few days after my Michigan State visit. I say that because, after I saw what was out there, I was able to make a better decision. I knew that I liked the University, but I wasn't sure whether this was the best possible choice for me. Once I saw what other places had to offer, I realized that those places just didn't compare."

Ferguson's older brother is a fourth year at UVa, and that may have had a little influence on his decision to attend Thomas Jefferson's University.

"It was real nice situation, because I had somebody who was there for the four years to tell me how life at Virginia was."

Ferguson said that he had been to UVa on several occasions to visit his brother. Did that give him enough information to make his decision?

"I want to say yes and no. Yes, I learned more about the University, but no, because I never really had an opportunity to see the football facilities until I was being recruited. That sort of gave me a new outlook."

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles and blog posts since the last SabreMail

Photo Gallery: Virginia 17, Penn State 16
Image: Tim SmithThe Virginia football team squeaked out a 17-16 win against Penn State on Saturday thanks to a late touchdown drive from the offense and quarterback Michael Rocco. Relive some of the action with this photo gallery that features 101 images of the Hoos, including Rocco, Steve Greer, Tim Smith, and more!

Sabre TV: UVa Edges Penn State
Virginia needed a late touchdown drive and a Penn State missed field goal on the final play to overcome a shaky day offensively on Saturday. The Cavaliers committed four turnovers, but survived the Big Ten showdown with a 17-16 win over the Nittany Lions. Miranda Mason reports on the Hoos' win for Sabre TV!

The Sunday Sampler 2012 - Penn State
One week after receiving some criticism for their pass coverage performance against Richmond, Virginia's linebackers responded in a major way Saturday against Penn State. Starters Steve Greer, Henry Coley, and LaRoy Reynolds finished among the team's top four tacklers in the 17-16 win. Read about that and much more in The Sunday Sampler.

Offense's Struggles Raise Concerns
Image: Paul FreedmanSaturday's outing against Penn State won't land in the top spot of worst offensive performances under the current coaching staff. It didn't miss by much, though. The Cavaliers struggled from the first play of the game on a day filled with penalties, turnovers, dropped passes, poor blocking, and more. So while the offense pulled a late-game rabbit out of its hat in a 17-16 win, plenty of work lies ahead for that unit this season.

Cavs Slide Past Penn State
Image: Jake McGeeThe Virginia defense had a good day. Virginia's offense had a bad day. Penn State kicker Sam Ficken had the worst day of all. Those three factors came together to tell the tale as the UVa football team escaped with a nerve-rattling finish with a 17-16 victory on Saturday. It marked the second straight season that the Cavaliers defeated a Big Ten team on the last play of the game.

2012 Watch List: Penn State
Image: Perry JonesWhen Penn State rolls in Scott Stadium on Saturday for its first road game of the year, Virginia fans will see quite a few things that look similar to their own Cavaliers. With multiple formations on offense and a base 4-3 set on defense, the Nittany Lions' sets and schemes should feel somewhat familiar to the players too. TheSabre.com's "Watch List" gives you some specific areas to keep tabs on during the contest.

Greg's Grades And Trends: PSU
Image: Tim SmithFor the first time in the Mike London era all three operations, offense, defense and special teams finished a game with championship level marks in my postgame grades. Overall, there was plenty to like Saturday but several opportunities for improvement. Let's look at the UR grades as well as prep for Penn State with the Trend Report.

Tailgating With Chefhoo 2012: Penn State
When thinking about tailgating food, I always try to keep it simple and develop recipes that travel well. After all, I don't want to stress too much about the food so I can really enjoy spending time with friends and family. I've served versions of this dish at fine dining restaurants and picnics alike, so it's a pretty versatile one to have in your arsenal. It's essentially upscale barbecue.

Sampson's Best Hall Of Fame Worthy
Image: Ralph SampsonGrowing up in Harrisonburg, Virginia, a small, peaceful town in the cradle of the Shenandoah Valley, Ralph Lee Sampson Jr. heard it all the time from his parents: Do the best you can, where you are, with what you have. The words would become Ralph's drumbeat. His core. Advice he would cling to from serene asphalt playgrounds all the way to glitzy NBA arenas. Sampson always did his best, where he was, with what he had.

Game Preview 2012: Penn State
Everything that happened in the last year at Penn State could be labeled shocking. So regardless of one's opinion on the NCAA sanctions, it's clear that the current coaches and players for the Nittany Lions face a challenging 2012 season. When asked how he thinks he would deal with the situation if he were coaching at Penn State, UVa coach Mike London said the only thing he could think of is to focus on football. So with that in mind, the game preview's goal is to focus on the game.

UVa Preps For Penn State's Visit
Image: Billy SchautzWhen Virginia released its football schedule earlier in 2012, it knew that Penn State would be playing its first road game of the season in Charlottesville. When the NCAA handed down sanctions for the Nittany Lions' program in July, however, it became clear that the visitors would have a much different look than expected. Read about that, Billy Schautz, and more in this notes article.

Beyond The Lawn With Stephanie Marie Garcia: The First Run Back
Image: Beyond the Lawn with Stephanie Marie Garcia It's incredible how running a mere 20 minutes can make you so sore. It's also incredible how short 20 minutes can seem; also how long 20 minutes can drag on; and, even more incredible, how you can experience both these revelations within seconds of each other throughout said 20 minutes. I don't even think I have the mental capacity to handle anything longer than 20 minutes of running at this point.

JHoo's Things I Learned 2012: Richmond
Image: Perry JonesYou know, starting a year with a win is nice. A lot better than starting a year with a loss. Having experienced both, I can definitively say that it is a whole lot better to win. And while there won't be 10 things to discuss here, there still are some things worth reviewing together. Let's take a look back at Virginia's victory against Richmond.
