UVa's Top 25 Wins Of The Past 25 Years

TheSabre.com founder Mike Ingalls penned a column last week on Virginia's "Top 25 Greatest Wins Of Last 25 Years" as a way to get everyone excited for football season. The free article listed the top 5 as follows:

  • 1. Virginia vs. No. 2 Florida State (1995)
  • 2. Virginia at No. 20 Virginia Tech (1998)
  • 3. Virginia vs. No. 9 Clemson (1990)
  • 4. Virginia vs. No. 13 Texas (1996)
  • 5. Virginia vs. No. 6 North Carolina (1996)

So what do you think? Did he get it right? How would you list your top 5? Top 10? Top 25? Let us know on the football message board!

One thing is certain, the Hoos need to add more candidates to the list and coach Mike London appears to have the program on the right track for that. Wins at Miami and Florida State last season are great examples of the progress. The 2012 Cavaliers got off to a great start this weekend with a 43-19 win against Richmond. Here's hoping that one or more potential top 25 wins are headed UVa's way this season!

   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Several prominent football commitments, including running back Taquan "Smoke" Mizzell, were in attendance for Virginia's big win over Richmond on Saturday. Only one official visitor was on Grounds this weekend, though, and he is a basketball recruit. (Check out weekend visitor info here on the Good Ol Blog.)

London Perrantes, a 3-star point guard out of Crespi (Encino, CA), made Virginia his first official visit stop this past weekend. The 6'1" prospect also plans to take officials to Washington State, Illinois and Arizona State. He has taken unofficial visits (trips the prospect must pay for) to both WSU and ASU already, but the trips to UVa and Illinois will be his first experiences at those schools. I hope to reach Perrantes this week for comments on his trip to Charlottesville and much more, so stay tuned.

This coming weekend, the Hoos' basketball program will play host to one of the top big men in the class of 2013, Briarcrest (Memphis, TN) power forward Austin Nichols. The 6'9" Nichols has narrowed his list of schools to six - Auburn, Duke, Memphis, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Virginia - and plans to make all five official visits. Virginia will be his first official stop.

Turning back to the football front, I was in attendance for last Friday night's match-up between Gilman (Baltimore, MD) and Good Counsel (Olney, MD). A combined four Virginia commits attend those respective schools, including Gilman linebacker Micah Kiser and Good Counsel products Kirk Garner (CB), Andre Levrone, Jr. (WR), and Brendan Marshall (QB).

This week on the EDGE, I'll have a full recap of the contest (Good Counsel won 20-19 in overtime), my thoughts on individual players, interviews with Garner and Marshall, and video highlights. Also this week, check out the Good Ol Blog for the latest "Week In Review," a look at how UVa's class of 2013 recruits performed in the previous week.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. FUMA's Pasztor Commits

Fork Union Military Academy offensive lineman Austin Pasztor made an official visit to UVa this past weekend. The 6-6, 310-pound prospect had an excellent official visit experience and, earlier today, gave a verbal commitment to head coach Al Groh, according to The Daily Progress and other reports. Pasztor becomes Virginia's 15th verbal commitment for the 2008 recruiting class. He is the fourth prospect projected to play on the offensive line.

A native of Langton, Ontario, Canada, Pasztor was discovered by Fork Union postgraduate head coach John Shuman in August, when Fork Union scrimmaged against the Canadian National team. Pasztor decided to come to Fork Union and, even though he is classified as a true senior, played for Coach Shuman's postgraduate squad this season. He played well, starting every game at left tackle.

Shepherd, Jennings Make Impact

Cavaliers Stomp Spiders
Image: Perry JonesVirginia opened the 2012 season in convincing fashion on Saturday, posting a lopsided 43-19 victory against Richmond. The Cavaliers proved superior in every category beyond the score too, dominating the rushing, passing, time of possession columns. Still in the moments following the game at Scott Stadium, the Hoos made it clear that there's a lot of work to be done in the weeks ahead.

2012 Watch List: Richmond
Image: Bill SchautzThe wait is over. Virginia fans eager to see the football team in action for the first time since New Year's Eve get their first chance of the 2012 season on Saturday. That's when Richmond comes to Scott Stadium in the season-opening game for both teams. To get ready for the game each week, TheSabre.com "Watch List" will give fans a sneak peek at a few key areas to keep an eye on for that week's contest. Without further ado, here's the list for the showdown with the Spiders.

Top 25 Greatest Wins Of Last 25 Years
Image: Chris LongNot long ago a writer from Yahoo! Sports provided a feature called, "Virginia Cavaliers Football: The 25 Most Devastating Losses of the Past 25 Years." I linked this feature within Sabre NewsLink fully expecting the author to provide a companion piece listing the Top 25 greatest wins of the past 25 years. He, unfortunately, did not. Never fear, I did. I didn't want to leave the Wahoo fan base hanging, so I made my own list of UVa's greatest wins.

Tailgating With Chefhoo 2012: Richmond
Last year, I was able to focus on a general theme for each tailgating article. Some themes were pretty easy (Maryland and Blue Crab for example), while others were quite challenging (Indiana??). This year, I'm going to share some of my favorite recipes that are pretty easy to make and will please a crowd. And thank goodness, because, even though I was born and raised there, I can't think of anything that is quintessential "Richmond." So this week's recipe is one of my favorite all-time tailgating foods. It's incredibly tasty and pretty simple: oven fried chicken.

Game Preview 2012: Richmond
Image: Michael RoccoThe season-opening game of Mike London's third season as UVa's head coach comes against his alma mater. That's not the only tie between Richmond and Virginia in this matchup, though. In fact, connections between the two schools abound. For example, for Michael Rocco and Richmond head coach Danny Rocco, it's a family outing. Read about that and get Sabre Editor Kris Wright's keys to the game in the game preview.

Rocco Named Starter
Image: Coach Mike London To cut to the chase, Michael Rocco will start his 14th straight game at quarterback for Virginia on Saturday when Richmond comes to town. On the season's first two-deep, Rocco retained his position as starting quarterback with Phillip Sims listed as the back-up option. David Watford holds the No. 3 slot. Read about the quarterbacks and more in this notes article.

Hoo Preview 2012: JHoo's Preseason Questions
Image: Eli HaroldAnother season is almost upon us and like most seasons, questions abound. Answers to those questions will come in time and so I suppose we could just set aside the questions and allow things to unfold as they will ... but if we did that, could we really call ourselves fans? No, of course not, as it is part of the DNA of any fan that one must ponder the questions. Here are 10 such questions that I am chewing on going into the 2012 season.
