Kohles Off To Great Pro Start

The Associated Press via VirginiaSports.com

Ben Kohles won his second straight Web.com Tour title since turning professional, closing with an 9-under 62 on Sunday for a three-stroke victory in the Cox Classic.

The 22-year-old former University of Virginia player won the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational last week in a playoff in Columbus, Ohio, in his first professional start. He was the first player to win a Web.com title in his pro debut, and is the first player overall to win in his first two tour starts.

"I think I played the best round of my life today. That was a blast," Kohles said after hitting 17 of 18 greens in regulation. "I'm pretty shocked myself. What are you supposed to do better than this?"

Kohles also wrapped up a 2013 PGA Tour card from the Web.com money list, and moved within a victory of an immediate PGA Tour promotion. He earned $117,000 to move into second place on the money list with $261,000, more than enough to finish in the final top 25 and earn a PGA Tour card.

"I don't think that part has sunk in yet," said Kohles, who will try to make it 3 for 3 next week in the Price Cutter Charity Championship in Springfield, Mo. "It's pretty life-altering."

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Here's a look at what's going on in the recruiting world this week ...

  • This week, EDGE subscribers will be able to check out a "PreSeason Report" or two on those players already committed to the Hoos. UVa has 16 verbal commitments in the fold for the class of 2013, and most of those players have already begun preseason practice at their respective schools.
  • UVa football practice begins today, and we'll be sure to let you know which recruits make the trek to Charlottesville to catch Mike London's group in action.
  • In two weeks and one day, Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) rising senior running back Taquan "Smoke" Mizzell will announce his college choice. UVa, West Virginia and UNC are the primary contenders, and right now the Hoos appear to be in great shape. This week, I hope to have the latest on another one of Virginia's top remaining rising senior targets, Liberty (Bealeton, VA) defensive lineman Wyatt Teller. We'll see if a decision may be coming soon from the 6'5", 270-pound Teller.
  • On the basketball front, I'll check in with Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) rising senior point guard Devon Hall in an EDGE article. The Virginia-bound prospect touches on a variety of topics, including what he needs to improve on the most before arriving in Charlottesville in the fall of 2013. The 6'5", 205-pound Hall has completed his AAU season and is now eyeing a second consecutive VIS state championship for CHC.
  • As of this writing, former Boston University standout Jake O'Brien has yet to reveal where he will play this coming season. The 6'9", 225-pound power forward visited the University of Virginia last Wednesday and Thursday, and he is also considering Boston College, Providence and Temple. O'Brien has one year of eligibility remaining, and because he will be a graduate student he will be eligible to play this season. A decision should come any day now, so stay tuned.
  • Also on the basketball front, Virginia is no longer in the running with class of 2013 prospects Kendal Harris, Xavier Rathan-Mayes and Schuyler Rimmer. Rathan-Mayes recently narrowed his list to 10 and did not include the Cavaliers, while Rimmer, a power forward out of Orlando (FL), committed to Florida. Harris, a combo guard out of Texas, pledged to Southern Cal. Virginia offered scholarships to Rathan-Mayes and Rimmer in the month of July. Harris landed an offer from the Cavaliers several months ago.

Sabre EDGE recruiting updates since the last SabreMail ...

UVa Becomes A Player For London Perrantes
Out scouting AAU games in Las Vegas last month, University of Virginia men's basketball coach Tony Bennett was particularly impressed with the play of Crespi Carmelite (Encino, CA) rising senior point guard London Perrantes.

Talented DT Set For Vandy, UVa Visits
In conversations with Tabor Academy (MA) rising senior Tevin Montgomery, UVa head coach Mike London and defensive coordinator Jim Reid "say they really think I should go [to UVa] for a visit. They feel they will be able to offer me four years with the mentality that this is the best of two worlds, with great academics and athletics," Montgomery said. The 6'5", 290-pound defensive tackle/offensive lineman plans to take the Virginia coaches up on their suggestion later this month.

Gold Medals For UVa Swimmers

From UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Releases

Virginia swimmers Lauren Perdue and Matt McLean earned gold medals at the 2012 London Olympics last week.

Perdue took home a gold medal with the United States in the women's 4x200-meter freestyle relay Wednesday. Perdue led off the American relay on Wednesday morning in the preliminary qualifying round to earn the medal. Perdue led off the prelim relay with a 1:58.07 and teammates Shannon Vreeland, Alyssa Anderson and Dana Vollmer finished the heat in 7:50.75, touching first two seconds faster than Italy (7:52.75). In the finals, the relay team of Missy Franklin, Vollmer, Vreeland and Allison Schmitt broke the Olympic record in a time of 7:42.92, defeating Australia (7:44.41) and France (7:47.49).

"What an unbelievable night,” Perdue said. “I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to contribute to a gold medal relay [on Wednesday]."

McLean, who graduated from UVa in 2011, won a gold medal with the United States in the men's 4x200-meter freestyle relay Tuesday. McLean earned the medal as part of the prelim relay on Tuesday morning. Charlie Houchin, McLean, Davis Tarwater and Conor Dwyer posted the fastest time of the two prelim heats in 7:06.75. After Russia took a small lead at the beginning of the second leg, McLean powered the Americans to an eight-tenth of a second lead by the time Tarwater hit the water. The finals' relay team of Ryan Lochte, Dwyer, Ricky Berens and Michael Phelps finished first in a time of 6:59.70, more than three seconds faster than second-place France (7:02.77).

"I had an awesome time on the relay this morning with Charlie, Conor and Davis," McLean said. "It was the greatest feeling walking out in the red, white and blue to a cheering crowd. Thanks to everyone for all their support and encouragement, it means the world to me."

It is the first time that the Cavalier swim program has had two medals in the same Olympiad since 2000, when American Ed Moses won gold with the 4x100m medley relay and silver in the 100m breaststroke.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles and blog posts since the last SabreMail

Hoo Preview 2012: The Sunday Sampler
Image: Coach Jim ReidWhen comparing the past two seasons at Virginia, one of the top storylines in the 8-5 bowl run of 2011 proved to be the defense's improvement. In the second season of a 4-3 alignment with Defensive Coordinator Jim Reid, the Cavaliers played the run better and created more disruption behind the line of scrimmage. Another key development? Third down defense.

Hoo Preview 2012: The Schedule
Image: Mike RoccoFall Saturdays tend to provide lots of emotions for football fans. Rivalries are intense. Wins are uplifting. Losses are crushing. When your favorite team can put together enough wins to go to a conference championship game or a postseason bowl, it adds another game or two to the emotional roller coaster. That's part of the fun, though. The Hoo Preview tackles the Virginia schedule next to see what Saturdays - and one Thursday night - could be like for the Hoos this fall.

Hoo Preview 2012: Media Day
When Media Day rolls around every year, it's a clear sign that football practice is just around the corner. Virginia met with the press on Friday to talk about the start of practice on Monday, the 2012 season, and expectations for the Cavaliers. UVa captain Perry Jones said the excitement level and expectations are high for a new season to begin.

Hoo Preview 2012: Now The Hard Part
Image: Coach Mike LondonVirginia coach Mike London came to Charlottesville to rebuild the Virginia football program. An 8-5 record marked the first winning record for the Cavaliers since 2007, snapping a string of three losing seasons. A surprise bid to the Chick-fil-A Bowl provided a little proverbial icing. In Tony Bennett parlance, 2011 was a turnaround year. Now comes the hard part.

Hoo Preview 2012: Take Five
Image: LaRoy ReynoldsWhen football season begins in early September, Virginia will try to put together back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2004 and 2005. To pull off that feat, the Cavaliers will have to replace the production of many departed seniors as they face an arguably tougher schedule. What are some of the key questions for the Hoos? Who are some of the key faces in 2012? "Take 5" as TheSabre.com covers some of the top themes, names, and more on day two of the Hoo Preview.

Hoo Preview 2012: By The Numbers
Image: Coach Mike LondonThe Virginia football team surpassed expectations in 2011 with an 8-5 record and a trip to the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Considering that the Hoos had suffered through losing campaigns from 2008-2010, it marked a welcome change for anyone fond of the orange and blue. So as UVa fans prepare for the 2012 season, what do some of the important numbers look like? TheSabre.com's annual Hoo Preview begins with a look at Virginia "By The Numbers."

JHoo's Summer Reading 2012
Image: David WatfordWhere does time go? Once, a long, long time ago, I felt like I had a lot of it. These days ... not so much. Time has been flying by for UVa football, too, with an eventful summer creating quite a bit of buzz about what is to come next. I have been dying to talk about a lot of those developments ... but oh, that whole "time" thing has gotten the best of me again. So before the summer is entirely in the rearview mirror, let's take the CliffsNotes approach and jam in as much Summer Reading into a column as we can, covering a key player at each unit on the UVa squad.

Beyond The Lawn With Stephanie Marie Garcia: The Aftermath
Image: Beyond the Lawn with Stephanie Marie Garcia The Olympic Trials have long come and gone; the Olympic Games are here, with the Opening Ceremonies kicking off Saturday night. Team USA walked through the stadium in their Ralph Lauren suits and berets. I was not a part of it. I lived vicariously through my friends and fellow athletes through Twitter, Facebook posts, Instagram images. It was cool to see how close we, as an audience, could get to the action and it was simultaneously painful to watch. I am so happy for the men and women representing our country, but I'm also, of course, heartbroken to be home.

Reid Entertains At UVa Media Day
The Virginia football team held its preseason Media Day on Friday. While this is normally a time for coaches to be upbeat and optimistic about the upcoming season, or perhaps show restraint or reservation, it almost always brings spirited or lively discussion from the coaches and reporters. But what made this press conference extra special is that coach Jim Reid was present and answering questions.

The Afternoon Break - Jones On Hornung Watch List
Virginia senior captain Perry Jones is included on the Paul Hornung Award Watch List for 2012. The award honors the most versatile player in major college football; it is presented by the Louisville Sports Commission and football legend Paul Hornung.

The Afternoon Break - Open Practice Times Set
Some fans had asked about the open practice times for the Virginia football team. UVa announced the information on Tuesday. The Cavaliers will hold practices open to the general public for six consecutive days beginning with the first fall practice on Monday, Aug. 6. The team added a Saturday practice as well, giving fans a chance to see the team Monday-Saturday next week. Admission is free.

The Afternoon Break - Long's New Contract
Over the weekend, former Virginia star Chris Long agreed to a contract extension with the St. Louis Rams. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the deal “is believed to be north of $10 million a year, and the guaranteed money could be $20 million-plus.” The extension runs for four years through 2016.
